I've had a chance to play on all 7 of the "official" NS maps, and I say that I love them all. But, I've always wondered what people thought of as their absolute favorite! So, here they are:
A) Bast (the one w/ Atmospheric Control)
B) Hera (the one w/ the Holoroom)
C) Eclipse (the one w/ Eclipse Command)
D) Caged (the one w/ that technological-looking Hive that has all those crevaces on the sides for annoying Skulks to hide out all game lol)
E) Nothing (the one w/ practically every floor being a metal grating , and the giant elevator with the big beam running down the middle)
F) Tanith (the one w/ that L-shaped hallway where you can see outside)
G) Nancy (the one w/ the Mess Hall)
My vote goes to Hera, because the ammount of tactical warfare involved in that map, with all its pivotal points, is just amazing.
What does the community have to say? What's your favorite map, and why?

A) Bast: Engine Hive's proximity to the Marine start can cause problems with siege, but it's not enough to actually hinder the aliens. It's a twisty little maze, and even though I know the map I still sometimes get halfway down a hallway before realizing this won't take me where I want to go.
B) Hera: Some very nice visuals. Environmental touches like the glass hall make it nice just to look at the level, nevermind play in it. Some very complex Hive rooms, making it very hard to lock off from intrusion as either race.
C) Eclipse: It's vent system is sub-par. This makes it very hard to get anywhere as a Skulk without tempting fate. Fortunately, it's also one of the few maps to utilize areas of deep shadow. A small, simple map good for getting players into NS.
D) Caged: If I had to pick a least favorite, this would be it. But only because half the servers in my area are playing it. The other maps are good too, and I want to play them. It's fun to start in Sewer Hive and totally decimate the marines before they finish building their turret factory. There are also plenty of hidey holes, high ceilings and vents for the aliens to play in.
E) Nothing: This one just seems massive. A simpler design than most maps, but enough corners, vents and elevators to keep it interesting.
F) Tanith: Possible overuse of weld points. Gotta leave something for those poor Skulks to crawl through. Nice high ceilings make Skulk ambushes possible, as oppose to the mainly tube-like construction of Eclipse.
G) Nancy: The most defensible marine start in the game. Doesn't leave as much room for construction, but nothing beats that ramp of death for keeping the aliens out. An absolutely gorgeous vent system, allowing you to pretty much get anywhere from anywhere. If you could combine Nancy's gameplay with Hera's visual flair, you might just get the perfect map.
I chose Nancy, just becuase it's the only map that(I feel) isn't stacked for one team, I've seen the map go both ways, **obscenity** I've seen bugs come back from one hive on that map... and I love it , except those **obscenity** fades >D
My NS expectations were totally fulfilled when I played nothing as a marine yesterday. I was home alone so I could yell into my mic as much as I wanted... let me tell you, I did. I turned out all the lights... and as I walked down the Ominous Whatever and the industrial ambience (I put in my own music) played... my mouth just hung open. The shadows and everything were mind-boggling. It was so incredible blasting down the hallway at a skulk that somehow got right next to me... !!!!!
Then, later in the game, we got 6000 resources. We then pwned the aliens big-time. (It was a 1.01 server... we DID have most of the resource nodes, but wtf? the comm even said that that was the most resources he had even seen, even with the resource exploit of v1)
Plus it's harder to get lost and you can't take 27 miles of vents or 2 hallways to get to the same place.
I admit it...I get lost pretty easy.
If I had to say in order....
Eclipse
Hera
Nothing
Caged
Nancy
Tanith
and....Bast..
I know a lot of people love Bast, and so do I, it's a beautiful map with amazing gameplay, but the big open hive is a good example of why outside maps just wouldn't work.
I like them both, though
... I think.
EDIT :: Ah, okay. I looked at the overhead maps to sort myself out. I should've voted for Eclipse. Eclipse is the best.
There are no good hiding spots near the marine base. The few spots are painfully obvious or well-lit, and it's very difficult for the kharaa to get from one side of the map to the other without a good vent system. The marines have 2 doors that separate the 2 sides, nice and easy for them. The room where the marines start is ridiculously huge, easy to defend, and has so much room to drop all the buildings. Marine starting rooms need to be cramped, have no auto-open doors that alert the marines when you're coming, and at least one L-shaped hallway. Every other map meets that criteria.
Actually I've never played on nancy. It doesn't seem that popular on any servers I get good pings to. Hera got my vote simply because of the whole ventilation/maintenance area. I love that place.
I even went solo and took out all the people and spawn points by myself (exept for some people who ran away)
I can say confidently though, that bast is extremely flawed, with siege turrets in the safety of Marine Spawn covering much of the map, and the far off Refinery that rarely sees action.
I vote to rename ns_eclipse to de_dust. It's simple, easy, and everyone loves it.
Nothing seems too spread out, but I haven't played it much.
Hera and Caged have great welding opportunities.
Finally, Nacey has a great vent system, but from my superficial analyisis, it's layout just lacks the great gameplay of other maps.
In the end, I think Hera deserves my vote.
BTW... Siege turret rocks!!
I don't care what came after that, this is the point where I kill you, burn my hard drive, buy the rights to my map, sue the NS team to have it removed, and jump out my 5th floor dorm window. As much as I respect dust for its respect, I never want to see Eclipse compared to it. Ever.
/me twitches
The only map i'm un-happy with is NS_Nancy, the only good thing about that map is the gameflow.
