The Sandman

<div class="IPBDescription">Help me out</div>A while ago I remember someone here mentioning The Sandman as being awesome. At that time, I kinda slept on the suggestion and never got around to picking any of them up. Last week though, I was at the library and grabbed <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Sandman-Dream-Hunters-Neil-Gaiman/dp/156389629X/sr=8-1/qid=1166977004/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-5584338-3617519?ie=UTF8&s=books" target="_blank">The Dream Hunters</a>.

I finished it in about a half hour and am now hungry for more Sandman. I've been perusing Amazon looking for a good place to start, but the original series looks a lot bigger than I expected. Can anyone suggest me a good jumping off point? I intend to read the entire series eventually, but don't feel like buying individual comics.

I *think* the last time I heard someone related to NS recommend The Sandman, it was Nemesis Zero.

When talking with me about what styles of stories I like, he once recommended <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0345444388/002-2771660-3416819?v=glance&n=283155&s=books&v=glance" target="_blank">this book</a>. I've kept it bookmarked ever since but haven't gotten around to getting/starting it.

I have no idea if it's a similar genre or writing style, but at the very least it's the same guy recommending it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Pity I don't know a thing about the Sandman and wouldn't be able to recommend a "jumping off point" as you've asked :/

Just be sure you read Sandman Volume 1. Try and go in order from there. If not, it doesn't hurt too much, but it does help your head.

Otherwise, the beauty of the Sandman series is just that- there is no 'jumping off point'. It all makes sense within it's own contexts, and furthermore the entire series is so masterfully done that there is no reason to worry about which one to go first unless you wanna go by chronological order.

I'm not a big comic type of guy, so by Volume 1 do you mean something like <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Preludes-Nocturnes-Sandman-Vol-1/dp/1563890119/sr=1-2/qid=1166989973/ref=pd_bbs_2/104-5584338-3617519?ie=UTF8&s=books" target="_blank">this</a>?

I guess I'm sort of confused between Volumes and individual Issues of the comic, and Amazon doesn't exactly help in that respect.

Yes, Preludes and Nocturnes is the definite start on The Sandman series; however, you should be able to successfully start at any point, as the stories are complex, interwoven and a bit chronological independent. I've read the entire thing several times, and I frequently re-visit favorite parts of it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Absolute Sandman volume 1 was just released, which I believe contains the first 25 issues (of 75) as well as bonus materials. I definitely plan on picking it up once I get the cash.
