NS and HL wont load anymore

<div class="IPBDescription">cant get NS to load</div>I know this isnt an ns issue as the first thing i tried was playing HL afterwards which does exactly the same thing, but i started having stability issues and shortly after ns just wouldnt load, always got stuck on the ns screen but with no menu's, then after awhile i get the error message,
Microsoft visual C++ runtime library
runtime error!
programs steamapps\blahblah\hl\hl.exe
abnormal program termination.
This seems like a really weird error message, i always get this in opengl, in d3d it loads up the screen then does nothing til i switch my pc on and off, and in software it brings up the screen with the buttons but nothing works, ive tried loads of different things but nothing seems to make a difference other than switching out graphics cards, ive got a 6800gs 512meg, which plays source games beautifully but ive lost all interest in cs after source came out, so that kinda sucks.
can anyone help me? i cant afford to buy a new pci-express graphics card at this time of year:(
i miss agp:(, ive got loads of agp cards lying around that would do the job.
note: tried 4 different drivers and exact same problem with beta 1.
