NS not detecting Steam for Install

When i run the 3.2 install, It says "Valid installation of Steam Not Detected" (or something similar). Is this because I have Steam installed on my D Drive instead of C? Also, where should I install it so that Steam will detect it?

Make sure that Half-Life is installed in Steam.

No, NOT HL2.

Just in case you weren't aware (and you should be), Natural Selection is a HALF-LIFE mod, not a Half-Life 2 mod.

ummmmm i no its a bit late i was just woundering if it counts to have halflife sorce the half life that comes with the hl2 or has it been like edited and stuff to make it better

Ok, let's clear this up a little...

If you bought just Half-Life 2, then you won't be able to play NS.
If you bought HL2 Silver (which comes with HL:Source), then you won't be able to play NS with that either.
If you bought HL2 GOLD (which cames with the entire back catalog of Valve games, and loads of promo stuff), then you can play NS on that, because it comes with Half-Life CLASSIC.

Technically, it's possible to play NS on a CS:CZ install, but it's too much hassle, and may break your CS:CZ installation...

So, unless your installed version of Half-Life reads "Half-Life" and not "Half-Life: Source", then you'll be able to play NS.

This means that although the game is essentially the same textures etc, the game itself runs on the Source engine, which means that everything will have been ported over to Source.

Half-Life and Half-Life:Source may play the same, but they are NOT the same game at the engine level.
NS2 will be <i>retail</i>, with NS:Source running on the Source engine, which means you will need Half-Life 2 to run it.

Basically, if you don't have Half-Life, then you can't effectively run Natural Selection.

Can a mod please lock this topic, so it doesn't fill up with more of these "OMG WHY NOT HL:Source" questions, and due to the original problem being addressed and answered fully...
