Upgrading computer

Another lame thread...
So I'm on a budget of £200-£210 (That's including delivery + VAT etc.) and I'm updating my PC which currently has a

ASRock P4i65G Motherboard, Celeron 2.4GhZ (Socket 478), 768MB PC2700 DDR SDRAM, 80+40GB HD, Nvidia Geforce 6600GT

My system quite clearly is bottle necking my gaming performance and I really need an upgrade for running powerful applications. I use Aria.co.uk as I always do as I trust them although other suggestions/changes or if anything won't run together (everything I've chose should fit together nicely) are wanted. I don't want to spend on junk or something which won't work.

So far I'm looking at getting the following bundle of joy,

Asrock 775DUAL-VSTA Socket 775 PCI-E & AGP / DUAL CH DDR2 / SATA RAID / 8CH HD AUDIO / ATX MOTHERBOARD £30.55
Kingston 512MB DDR PC3200 Non-ECC DIMM £29.50 x2=£59.00
Akasa Crystal Blue LED Fan 8cm 8cm / 80mm Case Fan £2.25
Akasa AK-960E Heatpipe Cooler INTEL Pentium 4, Pentium D, Extreme Edition, Core 2 Duo. £12.55
Intel Pentium 4 521 [2.8,OEM,EM64T] LGA775, 1MB L2-Cache, 800 MHz FSB SL8HX £52.95

Total : £184.84 inc VAT

With standard delivery (+6.95) Total = £193.01
With Saturday delivery (+14.95) Total = £202.41

So that's within my budget, anything else I should be changing or wanting?

I would not in a million years buy a Pentium 4 when I could purchase a Core2Duo instead, but with your low budget (I think; it's measured in fakemoney or something) it looks like you can't just swap out the mobo and the proc. To be honest your computer really isn't THAT decrepit; it certainly beats mine. What kind of apps are you looking to run, and what kind of performance gain do you want? Because as it stands it's really not worth blowing your money just for a moderately faster processor when you'll just have to get an entirely new mobo AGAIN next time you upgrade.

Looking to run games alot better as you can see the GF6600GT is currently bottlenecked by both RAM + Processor. Then I'd like to move on to PCI-E graphics which is the reason for the motherboard (it's dual 8xAGP + PCI-E 16x).

Applications like UnrealEd, Source Hammer Editor, Open Office, Winamp etc. are what I'm currently running at the moment.

Games I mainly play at the moment are WoW & HL1+Mods, or HL2SP. Source isn't that nice on my system and playing it online gets around 10FPS.

EDIT: Also the spares off this PC are going towards a few other spares I have to complete another hybrid-pc for my family if I upgrade. Will also use that as a benchmark for things such as HL2 levels etc.

I guess you don't have much of a choice then, but still, I think you'd be better served if you waited until you can buy a Core2Duo or whatever you're able to afford when you upgrade later; they're a whole lot faster than the last generation of Pentium 4s.

    Yes, DDR memory, on a DDR2 board? Pass me the crowbar <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />
If you simply have to have 1GB, then it's gonna cost ye <strike>either another tenner, or </strike>another £40, depending on if you want to be lumbered with the Value RAM. Not like there's anything wrong with Kingston's Value set, it's just a personal thing...
    512MB DDR2-6400
    1024MB (2x512MB) DDR2-6400
(Holy crap, Aira don't do the Kingston Value RAM at PC6400 =\)

Hokay, only place I can find that'll give you 1GB DDR2-6400 for less than a ton is Scan, here's the page Aeneon 512MB DDR2-6400. But, Mo3rd your stuff at your own risk tbh. Less warranty, less support, less everything in most cases.

But either way, the RAM is matched to your CPU bus speed, which will give you a little boost, due to there being no fsb neck (which has been reduced in recent times, but is still apparent in some cases...)

Wouldn't it be better to buy PC5400 as the DDR2 standard is 667MhZ according to the info. on the motherboard specs?
