Renderer Problem

<div class="IPBDescription">Won't go above 640x480x16</div>Resolutions above 640x480 and 16-bit colors do not work with opengl and direct3d. Any ideas why?

I'm using an nvidia geforce 7950gx2 with driver version 91.47 (just reinstalled this from a newer, also not-working release.) Also running windows xp, on an Athlon 64 x2.

Oh, and searching yielded three-year old results with no solutions. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

When you say the resolutions don't work, what do you mean? You select them in-game and you get a crash, a message saying you can't use them, what..

I've since figured out that selecting color mode, renderer, and resolution in windowed mode, and then switching to fullscreen, seems to bypass the problem. But to clarify, I'd start NS and go to options, and by default, 640x480 with 16-bit color and Software rendering would be selected running fullscreen. If I modified any setting, such as kicking up the resolution or changing the color depth, it would error out when it restarted, saying the mode isn't supported, offering the options of OK (which would return to software 640x480,) or cancel, which exits the program. This has persisted across several drivers that I've tried, so my comp must be autistic or something, but by selecting my resolution and such in windowed mode, and then reverting to full screen with the settings already locked, everything ends up fine. Some world, eh?

Sounds like a driver issue. Some of the old driver's data might still be on your computer causing problems. Try <a href="http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secure-cleaning/Driver-Cleaner.shtml" target="_blank">Driver Cleaner</a>, follow the instructions, and see if that works when you install a new driver.

It almost sounds like an issue simply managing the resolution change- remember, when you change resolutions in a full screen game, it also effects your DESKTOP resolution untill the game closes, at which point the desktop is restored. (I can prove this as I use extended desktop, and games that don't run in 1440x900 on my widescreen or 1280x1024 on my other monitor cause a resolution change that carrys across the extended desktop)

I know in HL2, changing from lowest resolution + settings to highest causes a lag time of almost 15 seconds for me. Might be you're simply overloading your system?

Try editing your config.cfg file and putting in the resolutions and settings you want. Might work <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
