The new Bond? I walked in, expecting to be blown away by yet another dumbing down of a franchise. But if anything, the 'back to the roots' spiel we've been spun seems to have, for once, held true. A great film, a decent plot, the only let down for me was Le Chiffre being a little too blatant as <i>'Here's the bad guy, he really is bad, look how bad he is, bad bad bad'</i> and the fact I actually cried inside when they had the audacity to wreck a DBS.
I've also just watched Deja Vu, which was great up until the last 15 minutes. I felt the ending really let it down, and can be predicted way in advance. Denzil Washington can also now be accused, even more so than Bruce Willis, of playing the exact same character in every film he's in. Please Denzil, I know you're good at being intense yet friendly, but do <i>something</i> else, just once!
- Shockwave
<b>Apocalypto</b> - havn't seen it
<b>White noise</b> - havn't seen it - it's been out here for ages though. Movies often take forever to reach the UK for some reason.
<b>Eragon</b> - Looks like trash, no matter how much I like dragons I can't stand bumbling plots with computer graphics as the only fall back.
<b>
The Departed </b> - good movie, the end is really something. Some drawling scenes and little bit of over-acting, but for the most part it's got a good tense feeling when you know the characters are on to eachother. I'd actually put this as rental material. There's not anything substantial that would make you need to see it at the theatre.
<b>Night at the museum</b> - looks like rental material, if nothing else than for robin williams (who I always enjoy watching).
<b>Babel</b> is out here, it's a good movie - a little long, but man I was driven to tears at a death that happens in the film. The mexican storyline kindof sucked to be honest. The japanese one was one of the most interesting, I'm fascinated with culture differences so this movie was a good watch for me.
<b>Talladega Nights</b> - Total rental material, just typical will ferrell comedy: idiotic, often bland, sometimes funny. That said it's actually not a bad movie, it's got plenty of bumps along the way that keep your attention. Plus everyone loves a "happy ending."
<b>Borat</b>: This is a movie I love to hate. I can't deny that some people will outright love this. I'm the type of person that gets uncomfortable watching this stuff. Granted I actually laughed out loud quite a few times, something that rarely happens in a movie. I found myself cringing as the movie invaded my sense of decency. This is a movie someone like me will find painful to watch, not because it's bad but because it really attacks me sensibilities and makes me uncomfortable. Worth seeing if you're not at all uncomfortable watching people make ###### of themselves.
<b>Blood Diamond</b>: Good movie, worth seeing in theatres. I don't know where the negative reviews come from. People complain that it's not a completely accurate depiction of african conflict or that it doesn't really grip the morality of it all. They seem to ignore the fact that the movie is based on the lives of what narrows down to 2 people. Great action, great acting, good story. Again, it's not a movie that fizzles out at the end. It slows and ends when and where it should.
<b>Accepted</b>: Rental movie, has some good laughs. Mostly just ends up being repetitions of the same "oh know the parents are going to find out what we're doing what shall we do" theme. Absurd ending, but expected. Not horrible, not amazing, just a B grade movie for wasting some time.
According to the IMDB trivia, they actually wrecked three for that scene.

HOLY SH*T, that's like £750k blown for a minute worth of film...
I actually gasped out loud when they wrecked it. Poor thing, it was only in the film for about 5-10 minutes at the most, and they F***ED it... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
Let me note that the Academy will have a hell of a time deciding on just whom of the actors in The Departed to nominate for which award. An absolutely amazing movie, with one of the best scores in recent memory (The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and The Dropkick Murphys in one package? I'm <i>so</i> in!)

WHAT THE FSCK!? NEM?!
Note: Will post a real post soon.
I've seen a lot more movies this year than any in the past, as now I'm on my own and my roomie is a HUGE movie buff:
Lethal Weapon Series: Funny stuff. Danny Glover is the man.
Equilibrium: Meh, the movie needed to be longer, and the early fight scenes were tons better than the later ones. And the katana fight at the end could have been much better. But the atmosphere and plot were good.
The Shining: R3DRUM Best. Horror Film. Ever. I was actually scared, and confused. WTH furries?
A Clockwork Orange: Holy hell. Shakespearian language fused with faux-future Orwellian themes? Sign me up! The imagery was about as vivid as it could get, too, and I love how it never lost its strangeness.
Borat: Wow. I hate uncomfortable comedy, but it was so absurd every minute that I don't think 30 seconds went by without me laughing out of embarrassment. Great film.
Children of Men: Wow. Love their vision of the future, good moral, fun action, great imagery, not bad at all.

Yeah, but you can't fault him for it in Man on Fire. One of the best action films ever. EVER.
Quickedit: What happened to the forums automatically adding this post to the last one? WTH.
CWO and shining,holy mackerel!
Kubric is a small genious.
absolutely agree on those as being golden film nuggets.
on another note,i am glad im not the only one trying to avoid will ferrell movies, because of him being painful to look at (or his films at least)
altho i could endure him in Oldschool, because he didnt hog the screen too much..
I went and bought American History X at Tesco the other day, because i saw it at school when i was a wee teenager, and i thought id see it again.
that film always makes you think.
i do enjoy movies that makes a lasting impression..
same as when i watched Kids a couple of years back.
I did want to buy my super exgirlfriend, but its still pretty new, so i didnt see myself spending 14quid on it.
that film looked funny.
i did enjoy eragon tbh.
but that might have been because cinemascreens are good for adventurefilms.
i remember when i went to see LOTR
i watched every one of em for the first time on a cinemascreen.
when i watched them again, this time from a normal screen, they werent that impressive.
i might just do that with apocalyptica tbh.
because it looked great on a cinemascreen.
but meh.Passion of the Christ was abit over the top for me, eventho it was a piece of work.
so i got mixed feelings about going to watch another mel gibson movie.
Apocalyptica is a band and shouldn't be marred by Mel Gibson.
wow oldskool films ftw!

Oh, I totally forgot that I saw American History X for the first time too- God, what an amazing film. I love movies on race, especially when done right like that one.
I also saw Schindler's List for the first time. Second movie to ever make me cry(the scene where he said he could save so many more).

Over the top? It was pretty accurate to the Gospels. Then again, yeah, that entire time was pretty over the top with how they did things.
Here: Ill write up a quick overview of this movie (OH NOES IMPORTANT PLOT MATERIAL DON'T READ IF YOU INTEND ON WASTING YOUR MONEY!)
Opens with the typical seperated couple fighting for the respect of their child, etc. Dad is fired from his old job, so is forced to find a new one to prove to his son he's not as much of a pathetic loser as he is. Really original. Cue stupid scene of him getting job at the museum with 0 prior training or background checks. Musuem comes to life, cue slapstick comedy with a monkey. Cue emotional speech by TDR. Cue soul searching scene in which he decides not to drop his stupid job that almost gets him killed. Cue montage of him learning general knowledge facts about history that any 5th grade graduate should know, in hopes they will make his job easier. More slapstick comedy involving the monkey. blah blah blah cue another emotional scene with his son, aka worst child actor ever. Then here is where the movie completely sucks it, it becomes clear that the director, who seemed to be making the whole thing up as he goes, runs out of ideas. Last 30 minutes features them making up new magical rules of the museum in order to fill ridiculous plot gaps(Well see if you twist the center piece of this magical tablet, then the museum doesn't come to life! Why didn't you just do that in the first place?) and add in a completely retarded plot twist that nobody sees coming... mostly because the director didn't decided is was going to happen until the final stages of filming. Cue more bad child acting, happy ending, and possibly the best part of the movie: The credits.
if you can appreciate films like shindlers list and American History X
watch Kids.
its not about race im afraid, but still makes a lasting impression.
it sure did on me.
didnt see too many films this year.
did go to a xman marathon and saw all xmen films in 1 go.
gods that made my ###### hurt ! sitting down for that long.
also xmen 3 was dissapointing >_>
i had expected more, seeing xmen 1 and 2 were not too bad.
and yeah i gathered a night at the museum wasnt all that X_x
In any case, Casino Royale was amazing, The Departed kicked ######, I didn't watch any other new movies this year, and American History X will always go down in my book for amazing because of the epically awesome curb-stomp bit.
Fight Club
Best movie ever.
I am Jack's smirking revenge.
one of the other films i saw this last year (were in 2007 now, still abit getting used to)
was Shawn of the dead.
i liked that film, well funny.
then i had to get snatch, Layer cake, lock stock and two smoking barrels and last but not least Revolver.
(layer cake isnt a Guy Ritchie film)
I like Guy Ritchie films.
he's well good.
Odd and at times painful humor, but not embarrassing.
not overly fake action and situations you do encounter, but in a less dramatised way/situation.
i well enjoy his films!
^^

if we're including favorites:
Fight Club
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
i didnt like fight club much.
o i forgot another fun film
Serenity ofcourse!
Jayne = win <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
I enjoyed American History X on a few fronts, but the curb stomp is a scene in movie history. It was actually a really good scene for what the movie's message was.

just read that theyre planning to do another Shrek before sowing it up.
i found Shrek 2 as good as Shrek1
but i dont know if they can keep it up.
i hope they wont end Shrek miserably.
because it started out great!
(my experience with sequels are they get worse by the sequel <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> )

Police Academy 6..... urgs....
But then again there are such lovely things as the matrix 3! Oh no wait.. damn.. uhm... eh... PotC 2 "dead man's chest" was pretty good and there are a lot of other good sequels <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Ahh yes, PotC 2, the sequel that was just a smash hit, beyond everyone's expectation... But hey, whatever keeps Johnny Depp in mascara <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
And don't you <b>ever</b> mention Matrix 3 and "good" in the same sentence. Not even with "not good". Matrix 3 was the <b>worst film evar</b>
Casino Royale was awesome <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> . I think the scene where <a href="http://he_was_poisoned_and_staggered_into_the_bathroom" target="_blank">SPOILER</a> was visually awesome. But I also loved the whole movie. Daniel Craig is definitely a Bond <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
My favourite part in that bit was the line after said spoiler.
I am glad they didnt.
Last film i saw Daniel Craig in ,happened to be Layer Cake.
Harsh film on a highly volatile topic.
Gangsters,Drugs and Organized crime,
so i was abit surprised when they announced he was going to take over the role as James Bond.
After countless actors "stuck" with the same James Bond imago, i am glad they roughened up his image and replaced the actor with a more "normal" face.
love the way they did it by giving him a "makeover" in a movie thats supposedly been the prequel to all the other James Bond movies.
sweet irony, dont you think?
"and the whole world will know ,you scratched my b***s" <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
oh emn eh..
Terminator 2 wasnt that bad a sequal to 1.
now T3 *was* bad!
Apocalypto
Blood Diamond
Little Miss Sunshine
Pan's Labyrinth
Slither (oh, so funny; perfect representation of B movies as a semi-parody)
The Descent
V for Vendetta
I'm sad that I didn't get a chance to see Babel, The Departed or The Prestige. The DVDs can't come soon enough. Hopefully I can see Children of Men soon (it just started playing here).
Casino Royale was pretty good, but it just didn't feel like James Bond to me. It seemed more like a really good action movie.

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I agree. Most of that was due to Daniel Craig's lack of charisma and finesse, and part of that was unavoidable, given the timeline of the story and Bond's just getting started as 007.
The film is about a born deaf-mute named Ryu who is trying to get money to afford a new kidney for his sister. Working in a hard-labour factory doesn't seem to earn him the money he needs, so he tries to get one through illegal means...and fails. So he forumlates the plan of kidnapping a rich businessman's young daughter for ransom money so he can pay for a new kidney, but the plan goes horribly horribly wrong, and the film just gets worse and worse as it marches toward the end. Park Chan-wook, director, seems to have a talent for making very disturbing and ..not <i>violent</i> as such, but very tense movies (aided with violence!) whilst still retaining a fundamental level of humanity. The characters in this movie do some terrible things, but there is no main character who is what you could call 'bad', despite this.
The oddest scene is perhaps when 4 boys are all masturbating together with their ears to the wall, listening to the screams and moans of the girl next door...the camera then pans sideways through the wall, and you see the girl is writhing around in pain on the floor due to her kidney, calling out to her brother Ryu, who is seen staring out of a window as the camera continues to pan, and is oblivious to her calls (as he is deaf).
Anyway, it's not a very happy movie at all. But it is good!
What's Pan's Labyrinth like?
