But since vehicals for aliens doesn't make a whole lot of sense, you could have, say, a couple skulks cling to an Onos's hide and hitch a ride....

I think vehicles would be very overpowered, if they were to have any realistic properties that is... No real place in NS for gameplay balance and they just dont really fit the theme imho :/
that does limit what vehicles could possibly be included in NS2, but here are a few suggestions:
1) if marines are able to build vehickes, just like jetpacks or heavy armor, they could get motorbikes or quadbikes that could navigate the closed corridors. even minibikes or a mini moke?
also, a few years back i read an article in a local paper that an excavator had discovered an abandoned WW2 tunnel that ran under melbourne, that was built for a possible invasion by the japanese. aparently the defence force built "mini tanks" and stored them in the tunnels, to halt the japanese advance, but they never saw combat, and i think they are so rare its impossible to find any info on them... but i know they exsisted.
this could be feasable in NS2, but they would have to be slow, very very loud, and with a slow rate of fire for the cannon...
2) if the map is a mining installation for example, there could be mining equipment that is stationary on the map, that marines could commandeer and drive around the map. they could be big drill thingys (maybe u could use the drill, or laser, as a weapon), or they could be something small that was used to move personnel and equipment around the station before it was infested, the little vehicle from austin powers that he gets stuck in the corridor springs to mind...

which would bascially be a drop ship for the aliens as well as a safe place to recover
Having some map specific utilities that the marines could use would certainly be good for the atmosphere, but rather complicated to balance. Those things can't be too powerful or the game gets unbalanced on other maps, but on the other hand if they're too weak nobody will use them.

i think some of the random vehicles they could include should have strategic value, and would positively alter gameplay. something like a light rail line running through the middle of the map (but not through any hives, marine start or double res nodes), with an engine and a few carriages, half full of ore being transported from one side of the minig outpost to the other.....
they could even take it a step further and allow a driver to change tracks, or alter the speed. fill it up with ha and you literally have a HA train!!! aliens could get a lot of use out of it as well, and people would think more about defending areas that dont just have hives or res nodes.
they should also include some random vehicles that wont really serve much strategic value, but could have small potential to do so. things like forklifts etc wouldnt be able to do much, but would add a bit more versatility and fun into the game <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
Could be kind of cool to have an onos be a transport of some kind heh. Cat bus? Onos bus?
Vehicles will be hard- another all or nothing kind of thing. Personally, no they aren't needed at the moment, maybe in an expansion? First things first- get the game playable.

Nah. The Kharaa would just evolve new lifeforms to match the threat. Scary lifeforms no doubt. Perhaps take some ideas from Gears of War for anti-vehicle lifeforms? Or perhaps evolve small. Acid rocket and xenocide explode vehicles. Or even have the mycellium retailate by entraping and dealing DoT to vehicles. Lerk upgrades into a dragon or something.
Nothing is invincible.
Just remember marines are ranged and aliens are mobile melee killing machines.

this sounds nice, but unless the maps get a lot more open areas in them, there would be no room to fly a dragon thats 10 times the size of a lerky <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/lerk.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::lerk::" border="0" alt="lerk.gif" />
then again, waddling around like a duck in small corridors and spewing 10m flames down them would be neat =)
oh and watch this

the only i can see this working is if you have an above ground battle and a below ground battle. commander uses mouse wheel to zoom between each level.
above ground open areas, more suited to powerful and fast creatures and vehicles,
underground and above ground facilities and factorys, close proxymity combat - ns the way we know it.
above ground lets you travel faster as you hvae your own vehicles. flying and driving i guess. however below ground is where you actually deploy all of the important stuff, so the idea is gameplay would switch between above ground fast action, to tight corridor suspense <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
I like that idea, but why do you need commander mode in a combat map? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Screams "Armies of Exigo" to me. Insanely obscure RTS which used 2 battle levels, one overground, and 1 underground, with various siege weapons, and spells that would affect one or the other...

if the devs ever make maps that feature a planets surface, this is the only way it could be implemented, and still keep the "feel" of NS. sounds like an awesome idea to me
