I think it would be cool to take welding to another level, buy having simple circuits in maps (and by simple i mean just connecting one wire to another to turn on a function, it wouldnt have to actually be a circuit in the traditional sense)

in the picture example (top down map view) the green wire is live with electircity and the red is not live, as its not connected to a powergenerator (big green block), so the device in the 2nd room would be swtiched on.
The players can then use the welder, or even a special device which would draw the strings found on hl2 power lines to connect one device to another and most importantly to a power supply.

so mappers would define what functions each circuit would have and then its up to the players in the game to weld together each circuit to a power a device, for example a lift or some lights.

    that would be nice

but than there would have to be some advice on the minimap where thse circuits can be found

I dont think that it would look realistic that you use welder to attach a hl2 type power cord into a socket.

    How about this:
    - There are power lines all over the map, running from room to room.
    - The lines are connected in a box (2 to 5 lines per box)
    - Most of the power lines are just from box-to-box, but some are generator-to-box and box-to-machine (or light or lift engine etc)
    - The player can patch the circuit inside the box using welder, to connect a wire to another wire.

This way the players can formulate a complete circuit to power a lift/machine/something. Map could have multiple different power generators in different places of the map.

To power a machine up, the players would need to create a circuit from an engine to the machine by welding the boxes together to form the circuit. Players could form backup circuits incase aliens destroy the circuit boxes (a box could have like 100hp healt, once it's dead, the box no longer connects the power lines together and thus would need re-welding to get it back up).

Box could have lights for each wire which enters the box, to show if the wire contains power.

For critical systems, players could provide multiple pathways from generator to machine, so that destroying one power box would not take the machine down. Example:

G stands for generator, numbers stands for rooms with wire box inside and M stands for a room which has a machine. "-" (line) stands for a power line from one room to another. "." (dot) does not mean anything, it's just there to make the ascii art look as it should.

    G------1------2
    |..................|
    \---3-----M--4

Players could power the M up by wiring the box in room 3 or in room 1,2 and 4, or they could weld all of them, so destroying one box would not power down the machine.

    What do you think?

Reminds a bit of that "pipe" thing you had to do in Star-Trek Elite Force 2 with the Tricorder to get machinery back online.

Sounds like a cool idea to me.
I'm sure icon-sprites could easily show where you need to weld.
Alternatively, maybe a new utility item would be needed? Like a tech kit or something.

Powering lifts is a good idea.
Say the lift is up and is not charged. Rines could fix it to make it bring down weapon/res stash?
Aliens would need something alike too to keep it fair - Gorge would spray acid to open whatever - need to think something through <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />.

Other advantages of getting those side objectives:
    - light up VERY dark areas on the map.
The com would have a power gauge and would be able to apply power directly to a location on the map for better lighting.
    - Research bonus, would lower time costs for reseaching.

    Stuff like that.

this sounds awesome, it would be heaps more interesting if the current weld points had more options available, and could even be reversed. if you weld a vent shut, you should be able to weld it back open later if need be.

the "generator" idea efectively turns 1 weld point with 1 game changing effect, into something dynamic that can be manipulated and altered throughout the game, providing multiple outcomes.

it would also be cool if when you look at the generator, it sooms into a interface where you can see where all the wires are connected, wether they have power, and what they turn on/off.

apart from opening closing vents, doors, lifts or turing on/off lights, it could also open airlocks like in some current custom maps, sucking everything in the room out to space...

it could even power other things like a light rail system that i mentioned here..

i also liked the idea of aliens effecting it with infestation, or by breaking boxes or biting wires, it shouldnt jsut be the marines that can manipulate these features

Very very cool. Perhaps aliens would have some way to break the circuit?
