<div class="IPBDescription">$250,000,000 for 5 years.... ... .. .</div>David Beckham has signed a 5 year contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy, reported as $250,000,000 - yeah, 1/4 billion dollars.

I thought this guy was over the hill? Do the Brits hate him for ditching their team after they lost?

    I knew it.

Atheletes get paid to much I think; that's pretty ridiculous pay for a passtime.

He's more than an athlete, he's a celebrity. He's not the world's best player by a long shot, and no way they'd pay 250m for him even if he was. A big name celebrity on the team would induce other players to compete more vigorously to join the team, and get the team a LOT more attention and support as David Beckham's fans follow his "allegiances" to whatever team has the most cash.

    Good grief!

    18 home games X Galaxy's last year's average attendance of <a href="http://la.galaxy.mlsnet.com/t106/load.jsp?section=about&content=history05" target="_blank">24,204 per game (leading the league)</a> means...

In order to pay his salary at $50 million a year, they'd have to charge $114 per ticket. And not have any other players. Hell, that's like Yankees or Red Sox tickets, and those guys average 40,000 fans a game for <b>82</b> games a year at home.

Oh wait, totally solved this: just charge $1 per ticket and $113 plus tax for a hotdog.

Nah, that's to obvious. $1 ticket, and 5 cent sodas. However the admission to the bathrooms is $113.

If I understood the newspiece correctly, the majority of his salary will come form endorsements.

So, wait, American Soccer teams make a profit?

I've been to a couple MLS games, because they are cheap... I can't see even with merchandise how... Oh wait, I bet the rest of the world... no, wait, it's an American team...

Are they scared of Dynamo? I mean, first season in, and they win the MLS Cup... not that big of a deal, right? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Man, the only thing this will lead to, is international recognition of US soccer. Once everyone realises how much Americans suck at real sports (no body-armour and/or death tackling) there will be much pointing of fingers and belly laughter from all the real countries.

    Oh yeah, I went there.

    *edit*
And who the ###### even cares about Beckham any more? Brazilians is where it's at, man.

I went and looked up (sorta) how he's gonna get paid.

<!--QuoteBegin-mlsnet.com+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(mlsnet.com)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->The move was made possible by the November implementation of the league's Designated Player rule, which states that a club may sign one player at a salary above the league maximum, with the league paying for the amount up to the maximum and the club picking up the rest.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    <!--QuoteBegin-si.com+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(si.com)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->league "maximum" of $300,000<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Still, a lot of money. =/

But, hopefully he will help attract more Americans to the game of soccer, which is what a lot of sport reporters are predicting, it seems.

As already noted the bulk of his monies will come from endorsements, not his base salary.

Brits don't really hate him. Personally being a Man Utd. fan he became "too big for his boots", which people soon found out when Ferguson cheaply sold him to Madrid. His wife pulled the strings, wanted him to be a pampered and commercialised namby pamby and took his mind so far off football he lost the star quality to survive at an older age at a big football team.

I'd also imagine that Beckham will make LAG alot of money in merchandising through shirt sales, tours, commercials, company affiliations and all sorts to earn back that 1/4 *billion dollars.

Also doesn't Beckham have a training academy for youngsters around LA?

    *Edit - Love typos

    <a href="http://www.thedavidbeckhamacademy.com/main.html" target="_blank">http://www.thedavidbeckhamacademy.com/main.html</a>

Yeah surprise, surprise his training academy is also in LA. Someone has $$$ in their eyes!

He should become a Hollywood actor, they thrive on effeminate men with tired talents that survive purely on celebrity status. Seriously, have you heard David Beckham speak?
