Lost Planet is sizing up to be one AWESOME 3rd-person scifi shooter. Basically, you're this guy, right? And he's on this planet that's <i>reeeeally really cold</i>. So, of course, you shoot stuff to stay warm.

See that "T-ENG" thing underneath the health bar? That number is how many units of heat energy your suit has left before you turn into a popsicle and die. I'd almost call it a timer, except it's not really. When you're out in the open, at the mercy of wild blizzards, your T-ENG can drop at about 6 units per second, but when you're in sheltered buildings/caves or whatever, it can drop at a much slower rate. The reason I go into this is because the T-ENG pretty much IS your health bar. I mean, yeah, you have a health bar that makes ouy die if it's depleted, but ya see, your T-ENG will automatically regen your health at a fast rate, at the cost of T-ENG units (it takes a away a GOOD chunk). Anways, you gain T-ENG by killing bad guys or whatever heat sources you can find (like blowing up explosive barrels) and collecting the little pool of glowy stuff they leave on the ground and...
Okay, you know what, this rambling's not going anywhere. Just play the demo or watch a video if you want the game explained. It's really freaking fun.

<i>So hard</i>
The graphics look hot though (lol! pun!). Luckily my brother got an Xbox 360 for christmas, so this game might be a possibility.

Sounds like a horrible gameplay gimmick that would quickly get dull; like the Wind Waker. Doesn't make for a good story either.

No kidding. It's like an action movie, the story's crap, the action's great. I could call Bullet Time a ridiculously overused gimmick, but that doesn't stop Max Payne 2 from being awesome.
But this game you have to kill so you don't freeze? I don't know how it works exactly, just doesn't sound good.
The game hasn't been getting great reviews... I think I'll pass.

And for the record: Playing both SP and MP demos...the game plays like balls. I was totally disappointed. Its nearly impossible to die unless you are exploring- oh right, lets kill off the player because he went down a valley you put along his path and he couldn't tell which way to go in the fork in the road. THEN make him start from the very beginning of the level again with no checkpoints.
Oh, and the multiplayer is just bad. No weapons are fun, mechs are worthless, and its just...ugh. So bad.
The one good I can say is: Yes, the graphics are awesome. Otherwise, bweh.
The demo took me a bit to get into with the controls but before long I was sold on it. The shoulders make up for the lack of quick-response turning with the free aim threshold. The grapple is also the best implementation of a grappling hook I've seen in a game. Great feedback.
Oh, there's checkpoints in the shipping game, at least thus far <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
Edit: Also, the collector's edition case is <i>the best</i> use of the standard-sized metal case as seen on Halo 2, D3, and PDZ collector's editions to date. Awesome artwork, and none of the shelf-bloating mess of, say, Prey. For whoever might care about that sort of thing. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

That wasn't a review but rather a collection of reviews (thus a meta-review) that Joystiq put out.
This game is probably going to crash hard... I just heard figures it's already sold over a million units (obviously including pre-orders)... The hype for this really exceeded the quality of the game I think... Chances are that it will probably get a sequel, and I hope for Lost Planet 2 it's a bit better.
For how early the demo came out (May compared to a January launch) it was already more polished than a lot of shipped games. I had a blast with it, and have likewise been enjoying my copy that arrived today. The very start of the game is a little off, unfortunately, and the story isn't looking so great (it is Capcom), but otherwise I'm having as much fun as I did intially.

Yea, the E3 demo released over Xbox Live was sweet. I wish they'd do that for more games. In fact, there haven't really been any good demos lately. They should release all E3 demos onto Live <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> .
Unless, of course, you haven't heard the news. In which case, I'm sorry you had to learn about it this way. It hit all of us pretty hard. Just remember that life is still worth living.
I don't really see the point of that, what with E3 being dead.

...I thought that announcement was 2 years ago, and they had E3 despite that, so at least I've got that cleared up now. There's still the Tokyo Game show and that one conference that takes place in Germany (and probably other ones I don't know about)...also the one for game content creators ...but I'd never expect a demo for players from something desgined for game creators.
Anyway, E3 was pretty useless anyway. Everything important happened the first day, and usually all you got on 'news' sites was screenshots of the same game that had been announced a few months earlier. I guess it was cool that all the companies were actually competing for eachother for 'the best game' but it didn't really serve much of a purpose to me.
