I used to be into ulver quite a bit. When i first heard Nattens Madrigal, I just couldn't listen to it at all, but once I listened past the production quality, there's some great music behind there.

Dude, Nattens Madrigal is the best metal album ever. In fact, I think it would be pretty mediocre if it had proper production. Like most old-school black metal, it's done on purpose (well not exactly, but close enough). Contributes to the theme and all that etc...

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--><!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Death are awesome. Symbolic would have to be my favourite album of theirs by far.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Finally someone who agrees. All their albums are amazing, but Symbolic... that's THE album.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Dude, Leprosy is where it's at. To each his own I suppose.

Led Zeppelin is considered Prog? Cause they were the forerunners of metal or something?

The album Panopticon by Isis is something that has been playing over and over in my amp the past few days.
    <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Panopticon rules. I think I prefer their newest album, but I haven't listened to P in about 6 months now (it's on my mp3 player for which I have no cables..)

Anyone else like Mastodon? Here's two videos off of their latest album (they're two very different songs):
    <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFa0FJfC1dQ" target="_blank">Colony of Birchmen</a> (<3)

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YrRIekrWhw" target="_blank">Capillarian Crest</a> (really really crap video, I wouldn't bother watching it, just listening)

I prefer Mastodon on Leviathan, but what I've listened to of Blood Mountain really kicks ######. I should listen to all of Mastodon's stuff one day. Good bassist.

Oh em gee i hate the bands you love lololol
    <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Well said 404. I had hoped it might not have happened.

Talking about muse in your earlier post glad you like their stuff man. I'm... ...well I didn't want to be a fan that was like "muse complete me", but I discovered that I probably am. I can take the negative sides that people talk of (whiny git vocals) on board but wouldn't even dare call them 'emo' because of the notable variety between songs and the fact that they almost parody melodramatics with their hyperbole. Don't miss out on Origin of Symmetry because it is easily their best album. Going to see them play in wembley stadium in june! Twice!

I downloaded bomb the music industry. Will be listening to it more an more as it goes into regular cycle, I'll tell you what I think of it Jimmeh.

I wish I knew the name of this band my friend played to me. It was like mars volta (almost exactly) but <b>back in the seventies</b>. These guys were a major source of inspiration for volta and it was awesome to listen to the people that inspired the people that inspire you. Eg (going back to muse) I need to get into some rachmaninov because he's an influential romantic composer and a large influence on the music of muse.

Just out of interest, how many people here play musical instruments? and to what degree of intensity?

Well, I am a bit of a skeptic of emo in general, but Muse seemed to work it's way into my musical tastes. Mostly through a video with robots, cowboys, lasers, and a random unicorn.

But I do like all of their albums, mostly because they all have a differnet sound. Showbiz is a more vocal-stretched album. Origin of Symmetry seems more bass driven and heavy. Absolution is very torrid and rhythm guitar driven (in other words, repetitive guitar riffs. Almost too much to be annoying) but I still like it because the vocals are such a range. From smooth sustain to over-the-top creaks.

Black Holes and Revelations is my favorite album of 2006. More electronics into the mix, a nice flow between tracks, and some downright awesome sound bytes. The sound where they sing "Glaciers melting in the dead of night..." is awesome, and some of the background sounds in Map of the Problematique are equally awesome. The lyrics of Starlight are spot on, and the mix of rhythm and all-out rock makes it one of my favorite epic songs, right up there with Paranoid Android.

But I still think they are somewhat separate from a lot of the other scream-emo I hear. Mostly because their tracks can be described as passionate, rather than angsty. Plus, for every downer song, like Time is Running Out, there is a song like Feeling Good.

Just listen to "Dark Shines" with a cranked subwoofer and tell me you don't like it.

As for instruments, I do play a BIT of guitar. And by that I mean I can take a tab online and play something fairly complex. After a year of banging my head against Radiohead's notoriously non-repetitive and synthed out riffs, I had a great time playing something that was good sounding yet simple, like Plug-in Baby.

I listen mostly to electronica and mellow rock atm. Some radiohead, coldplay, portishead, air, bright eyes, that kinda thing. I also dig dancable music such as progressive / psychedelic trance and electro / house.

My brother recommended me "Hot Chip - The Warning" which has some very pleasant tracks on it. Its kinda mix between chill and mellow rock. They're supposedly an electropop band, so most of the tracks on the album is in that style, but as I don't like that style that much, I don't find the album that good as a whole. The pleasant tracks make it worth it though.

I 2nd that lamb is good stuff. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEUWFvT16f8" target="_blank">Gabriel</a> is probably their most known piece. Some of their other stuff is more upbeat, but also good.

My favorite trance album is <a href="http://www.ticonmusic.com/" target="_blank">Ticon</a> - Aero. Very nice sounds / grooves on it. <a href="http://www.psyshop.com/shop/CDs/dig/dig1cd012.html" target="_blank">Samples here</a> for real player. My favorite tracks on it are "Waiting for the knights", "groovin in bed" and "ghost in the machinery".

If you're into Air and similar stuff, you might also like Zero 7. I belive <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCwwUMltXyA" target="_blank">Somersault</a> is pretty known. Nice track in any case, and the album "When It Falls" is good as a whole.

The Postal Service is afaik the lead singer from Death Cab For Cutie together with some random guy. It has the same emo feel to it. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMOkfI7wCrI" target="_blank">Such Great Heights</a> from "Give Up".

If you're into chill with a bit of a beat, check out Ulrich Schnauss. His sound is a bit cheesy at times, but it works well. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhLAx54vEsw" target="_blank">"Bluemenwise Neben Autobahn"</a> and<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxzI4x_CB0U" target="_blank">"Between Us and Them"</a> are decent examples of his sound. Those are not real videos tho, just random vids on youtube that used his music (all I could find :O!).
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Just out of interest, how many people here play musical instruments? and to what degree of intensity?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->I've been casually taught acoustic and electric guitar, but haven't honed my skills very much, like, ever ;( .. So I'm not that technically good. I've learned basic theory from playing and at school, which I use to jam with myself frequently. Usually just a verse of some chords with a 'lil melody - I'm rather bad at "building" a piece, but decent at making just a 4 bar / 8 bar groove.

I've also toyed, and still do a little, with various music programs (reason, fruity, buzz), but as I stated, I'm not very good at building pieces. I'm just too lazy / lack patience etc <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" /> .. You can listen to some of my old stuff (2-4 years old) <a href="http://and2k.mymusic.dk/" target="_blank">here</a> (click <img src="http://and2k.mymusic.dk/images/icons/play.gif" border="0" alt="IPB Image" /> to listen) .. I picked up electric bass a couple months back, ignored it for a while, got t properly fixed up, started practicing a couple times a week for short periods. I've been getting better and ramping it up to 20 minutes every day or two, sometimes upwards of 3 hours worth of practice in one day. It's taking time to build up muscle memory and finger strength, though. Even getting clean sounding notes while playing a full bar is still a bit of a challenge.

I guess I'm not too bad off, though. I've only started considering what I do "practice" in the past two weeks, and even then it's more noodling getting used to what I can do. I'm music obsessed, though, and I constantly think about my bass and have really started picking it up a lot lately... since I started playing WoW again I moved my amp next to my PC and keep my bass hooked up to it so I can fiddle around on flights and stuff.

Yes. At least, thats the only genre I could ever see <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxHGWgPhXaY" target="_blank">them</a> being in. Nothing else makes sense. Here: They belong in progressive as much as <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Myw2BexSvj4" target="_blank">The Mahavishnu Orchestra</a> does. Lets not get into a discussion if they are "good enough" for them or not, as that ends up being nothing more than a flamefest.

I've been playing Classical Guitar for 1.5 years now, for intensity... I'd have to say J.S. Bach's "Bouree in E Minor" is the hardest piece I know. I'm working on Andrew York's "Marley's Ghost," which I find more challenging.

    I play musical instruments. And to what degree of intensity? My life. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I'm going to U.Houston's school of music on the tuba. So, I obviously play tuba. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> I've got a few recordings of recitals I have done, if anyone is interested (eventually, I'll set up my website). I also do some bass trombone (play it when I did/do jazz), some euphonium (I teach it...more in a bit), some piano (partially because it seems fun, mostly because the music school makes me), and a few others.

Right now, I'm working on my music education degree. 3 1/2 years down, 3 1/2 to go. I joke, and say that I'm on the decade plan, but if I get out before then, I'll be happy. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> (I had issues to deal with, actually, family related.) I'm teaching middle and high school students right now, which I really enjoy (even if they don't practice and act up... hey, I did the same... what goes around comes around <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> ). So, right now, I guess I'm on the track to become a music director/teacher (which means, when I graduate, I need to marry a rich girl, so I can survive <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> ).

    Oh, where to begin?

Pearl Jam: Mature grungy arena rock for those who can't handle the popness of U2 nor Bono's voice.

Radiohead: Tom yorke's tragic vocals meshes extremely well into the alien sound paper provided by the rest of the band

Coldplay: British slow-beat rock for casual listening

Nightwish: Powerful opera light vocals mixed with powerful melodies.

Lacuna Coil: I wub these, the female front has a beautiful voice and coupled with a heavy-pounding beat, it is a Recipe for Win.

Bright Eyes: Although occasionally overwrought, his poetic excursions are the soundtrack of any teenager's life.

Placebo: Raw-sounding alternative band. Some of their tracks have a hypnotising feel to it (try pure morning and english summer rain).

Pink floyd: Do I really need to describe these?

I can't help but scream along to Meds. It feels like a song that needs it- not a punk like scream, but a true, desperation scream, as if you're in danger because your lover didn't take their meds.

404NotFound - I agree that there are bad songs for muse (TIRO being one of them). I'm surprised that you like Black Holes and Revelations best. I'm pleased muse keep changing even if it's a nasty shock with each new album, but I thought the electronic sound is quite flat and not in keeping with their dynamics of before (dynamics I adore). But I think it comes down to personal preference. I skip supermassive black hole (track3) and love assasin (7) and Knight of Cydonia (11). And of course I thought the video was truly terrible but funny at the same time. And you haven't mentioned hullabaloo, a b-sides and live show album. Released after OOS. Get hold of that.

I'm surprised how many people have listed radiohead as a core musical experience. It seems (as I had previously not registered) that radiohead are something big, and somehow getting bigger all the time. Thom Yorke has released a solo project called eraser that's alright.... I'm having a hard time getting into electronic music. It strikes me as a patience test. If anyone has some hybrid bands to suggest so I can move from a different genre into the electronic realm (real laptop music) suggest away.

pip1 - I missed hot chip at reading festival this year! I am a fool. Dunno how long they will stay around though I have a feeling the music industry (at least in britain) is finding the up and coming bands, forcing a great album out of them (no bad thing), promotioning every last penny out of it (annoying), then dumping them into obscurity like so many juiced orange rinds (mucky!).

I think it's cool people have classical interests in their history. I never picked up the piano as a kid. Just stonewalled progress every sunday when I had lessons. Then about 2 years ago I started playing again. Thank muse. I got into mozart through personal choice, now i'm just trying to learn more but sheesh if uni doesn't take up all my precious time.

Quaunaut - I'll ask my mate.

Jimmeh - I'm liking the bomb the music industry CD. Tis fun!

And! I haven't even mentioned wolfmother! Like led zepplin? Like power trios? Like the whole wolf eagle unicorn visuals of cheesy rock? Get yourself some <a href="http://www.wolfmother.com/" target="_blank">wolfmother</a>

I'm quite into my melodeath at the moment, loving In Flames, Soilwork, and Mors Principium Est. Also intrigued to discover an early In Flames album that is, well, nothing like anything I'd heard by them before. Struggling to remember the name, but it certainly sounded like it had very folky influences, which is always a winner in metal.

more people should be listening to <a href="http://myspace.com/dethklok"" target="_blank">dethklok</a>

i pretty much listen to the only good music out there i have my own team to check my music taste weekly to check that my music taste is the best and so far all test results have proven me right and you cant argue with facts like that

<a href="http://www.myspace.com/itsthebigbadvoodoodaddy" target="_blank">big bad voodoo daddy</a> - yheyre swing which is pretty much the coolest music ever and if you disagree youre probably a square who can die in hell

<a href="http://www.myspace.com/cherrypoppindaddies" target="_blank">cherry poppin' daddies</a> - again swing with some older stuff thats punk which isnt very good but the swing is awesome and again if you disagree your wrong and science will prove this

<a href="http://www.myspace.com/theaquabats" target="_blank">the aquabats</a> - theyre a ska punk band and they will punch your face right off your body if you dont find them super rad

<a href="http://www.myspace.com/legendaryshackshakers" target="_blank">th legendary shack*shakers</a> - demented gypsy steam punk rockabilly music that will make your face cave in and sprout flowers

<a href="http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=401415" target="_blank">reverend horton heat</a> - some more rockabilly and you should be kneecapped for reading this sentence instead of clicking the damn link and listening

so to recap i am right unless you agree with me totally your music choice sucks

I played the trumpet for 2 years but as I tried to advance I didn't think I could keep up with those I played with and quit after that. I didn't have any interest left and litterly forced myself to play 10 min a day. I also got stuck on a certain tune which was almost litterly impossible for me to play, bleh.
