Just enough to serve for basic understanding of the game.

I wouldnt really want a single player campaign, to be honest could mean less players playing online.
But a brief training campaign for the basics would be great (just to lay down the facts and basic game play)
Although an advanced marine tactics tutorial could be handy too - like taking down an onos by trapping it in a slow moving lift, or taking out a fade with shotguns - this could even be multiplayer with everything already set up so its just a quick few tactics lessons - about 10 in a row, even on the same map so that there is no loading time.
There definitely needs to be some 'entertaining' way of training or learning the game, especially commander role (which really is at the heart if this game in regards to the more intelligent aspects of fps, ie strategy/upgrade/res counts/particular paths in regards to damage/etc) as most people will want to jump into an online game and get going.
The thing I am interested in seeing particularly in the commander mode is some kind of civ style hierarchical menu, that shows the command chair at the top, and then branches to what can/has been built and some basic info about each building/unit. Then anyone can jump in without training and have an understanding of what to build next/what is required and what it does.

TrC, grandmaster of thread necromancy. But, agreed. After NS2 multi is out, it'd make some nice DLC (even paid for), or standalone I dunno. Then again, you'd have to make it up to the quality of the multiplayer game.
I would like to see some people creating some training maps/mods. A fresh 'NSPlayer' can learn how to command, alien controls, etc... There is potential with the powerful scripting engine to create tons upon tons of neat gamemodes.
there were talks awhile ago about making a tutorial so new players "didn't hit a wall". but as with the posted fan-made ns1 tutorial, and the modability of n2, i'm sure the fanbase will make SOMETHING if UWE doesn't! maybe the fanbase can make something that gets included for the realease...
like to make a ns2 mmorpg mod. like normal ns2 but instead of ready room you go on a world server where you can dress your char, go to a bar and get laid.
but coop maps, where you can play only one side... for training purpose only.
like co maps where meant.
but there is enough space for mods (i hope you have only to connect to the server and you will download all of the content from it like in q3 and serveradmins can use a cvar for a repository like a ftp or http address, so heavy traffic load dosent affect the gameserver) and ofc custom maps!
so i do not see any problems in creating such things... any one remember hl coop mod?
imagine that with ns2... or something like l4d as ns2 mod, or commander vs commander mod, like sc2, or or or or or or or..... like i said, enough space, its all up to the uwe guys, how well they support modding (should be easy for both, users (one click solution and nice filter possibilities) and developers... you tell us :D)
How about co-operative challenge maps in a vein similar to Starcraft 2.
Crafting specific scenarios that parallel common multiplayer situations would be great for giving basic strategy and tactics lessons.
For example:
1) Escorting a convoy of MASCs to destroy a hive 2) Getting a base up and running (Marine commander), establishing resource nodes to spread the power grid. 3) Killing several squads of NPC marines as Fades using guerilla tactics 4) Defending the hive from increasingly large waves of marine attackers, using only lerks and skulks 5) Lots more.

I know what he said. You are, however, clearly not intelligent enough to see the implied question: Who would do online co-op for 2 minutes of play at a time? I am hopeful that he, and everyone else on this forum, have a higher standard of intelligence and don't require me to spoonfeed them.

The only thing I could see possibly lasting a mere 2 minutes would be Example #2. But I do see your point - they would still be rather short. And if that were the case, it would probably be better off for SP tutorials/challenges.
But if it were me, I'd still play with others, since that's just how I roll.

First it would nice, second it might weed few of those who want singleplayer featured MP.
Wouldnt mind if UWE made it side project.

just my cents.

Trying to insult my intelligence isn't going to get to me btw. Especially when it is clear who is being a dunce.

It is now clear that you are being the dunce.
