Are you playing HL / NS through Steam?

Since a pretty long time ago HL MUST be installed and played via steam. http://www.steampowered.com
There is no way you can play online without it.

WON install of Half-Life, by the sounds of it.
Download Steam from http://www.steampowered.com, make a new Steam account by clicking on "Create New Account". Then follow their instructions on binding your valid, unique, Half-Life key to your account. Download any updates for HL via Steam, then play the training level through.

Install a new version of Natural Selection, then restart Steam.
Choose My Games, then double-click on NS, and enjoy <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
