56K help
Im sorry to bother you if your reading this but im in a bit of a dilema. Im very sorry if this question's answer was restated somewhere else and i couldnt find it. Im in the middle of a crisis... a 56K crisis. Somehow, no matter what game i join, my ping sky-rockets to 1000+ ping. I have no idea if this game is 56K friendly or not and this is just my own problem. Please help me, this game looks really great and i want to try it out... I just dont understand why my ping is so high. I heard you have to tweak some commands or something but i just dont no what to do at all. Thank you for sparing your time by reading my plea.
If this helps.. my system is made up of:
256 RAM
Pentium4
56K modem
Gateway VX720 on NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 200 (32-Bit Vid-Card)
I currently use Graphics Mode D3D, Steam, and im using 3.0 Beta for NS
Please refrain from flaming me if i did a stupid, common, easily fixed mistake... i just want to have a good time and play this mod...

1) Open Steam
2) Click settings
3) Go to the 'internet' tab
4) Select modem 56K
[EDIT] Also, it's most likely not related to your ping, but NS tends to run much better in OpenGL mode.
Firstly you might wana try running NS is OpenGL mode, I find it better then D3D.
However that wont sort your ping problem.
Have you played online games before on your setup, if so is your ping ok on those games?
Erm that sounds real wierd tho,
I only asked to see if it was a modem/line problem, but if you get a stable ping on other mods its obviously something NS related.
You could try messin with your rates.
in console try something like
turn net graph on - net_graph 3
rate 4000
cl_rate 4000
cl_updaterate 15
cl_cmdrate 15
and see if it helps
rate = amount of data transfered to and from server, so 4000 is about 4kb/s I think
the other 2 is the number of times the server updates you position per second, so the more the better, but obviously on a 56k you cant have these too high.
Anywayz try these settings and keep an eye on the net_graph, it gives you a good indication of whats happening with your connection.
Dont forget OpenGL to
rate 2500
cl_cmdrate 30
cl_updaterate 20
That should make a difference. I'm a 56ker and my ping is usually 300-400 and I live in a small town with bad phone lines. Ill send you my config file if what I said above dosn't work.
Make sure you have steam set to work with 56K (explained earlier)
Turn off QOS pkt schedular (start--> Settings--> Controll panel --> Network settings --> Your network connection trhen find and disable QOS pkt sched)
Make sure you set all games to NOT auto update
Steps:
Open Steam
Go to the games Window
RClick on each game and go to properties
Tell it to not auto update.
when ever you play the game you will have to re do this.
