I won't consider that a spoiler. You gave the main theme of the book (hopefully the movie too ), which is exactly what I wanted. Besides, that was ONE example amongst all the cool scenarios that could come from this. You'll probably get more spoilers outta trailers/back of the book/friends.

Cool stuff, I'm actually thinking of picking up the book

    go watch bubblegum crisis.

to elaborate: bubblegum crisis is the exact same thing as i robot, pretty much. the robots are humanoid, just like in i-robot..

but when they go crazy, they start changing

I don't mind a story being rewritten for film, as long as it's done well.

If they've redone the story on the premise of the original book, so be it. Fair play to them if they do it well. However, it's when they do it badly I have a problem with it.

I am a self acclaimed film nazi.

i'm looking forward to this movie. I don't know zig, i personally really like the look of the robots. they fit in well with a realistic (i.e. non ANIME) movie and the animations really give them a "kickass cool" factor

The movie still kicks arse, along with Jurassic Park which isn't anything really like the book.

well, to start off with, a robot's 3laws logic core NEVER failed. Robots were never malicious. There was one exception and that was because the positronic brain was programmed with only half of the first law
full first law: A robot may not harm a human being, or through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
This exception was programmed with: A robot may not harm a human being.
So to attack, which only happened once, it simply placed its arm on a person's shoulder and then simply didn't counteract its own weight and allowed the person to fall under the weight of this very heavy arm.

All the stories were centered around the 3 laws. Various stories concerning problems where the laws came into conflict (resolved in later stories), problems where the laws balanced, issues concerning how they may act or become unstable, etc.

Woo. Finally someone I agree with.

I, Robot was a collection of short stories exploring varing facets of the idea of robots in our society and interesting by-products of the three rules of robotics:

    1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

    2) A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

    3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Isaac Asimov didn't present these as absolute and infallable rules. Many of his stories were exploring loopholes in the logic. For instance in the book "Under a naked sun" he proposed that a robot could kill a human if the robot served the human a drink that had been prepared earlier by another robot. The earlier robot would be instructed to place a harmful substance in the drink, just to study it's effect, and be re-assured that the mixture would be discarded after the experiment. Huzzah, one dead human.

Mind you, the brain of the robot that served the drink promptly exploded when the man died.

From what I've seen in this trailer, someone should dig up Sir Isaac and attach a generator to his skull as he would be spinning in his grave. It's got robots in... that's about the only relation to any of his books I can come up with.

This movie looks to be A COMPLETE AND UTTERLY TERRIBLE STEAMING PILE OF TURDS.

    --Scythe--

P.S. You'll note that no humans were actually harmed in the trailer... Sure, one bloke got chucked on his arse but myeh...

Sorry for the double post but I've really gotta make this sink in.

(Presumably) Susan Calvin: A robot can not harm a human being. The first law of robotics.
Will Smith: Yeah, I know. The three laws. Your perfect circle of protection.
Will Smith: What if it was given an order to kill?

    Oh god... the idiocy...

    I really do hate hollywood.

    Is killing harming?

Besides, you could make a convincing argument that killing is actually a benefical thing rather than a harmful one.

So let me get this straight, U.S Robotics has f'ed up and made a robot without an intact first law, I can beleive it. The one renegade robot crontrolling all the other robot's positronic brains? No. It can't happen. Throughout I, Robot it is clearly stated that the 1st law cannot be removed without "killing" the robot, plus the zeroth law isn't introduced yet so you can't argue that killing a human may have been for the good of humanity and the people were too narrow-minded to see it coming. It seems inconsistent as HELL with the books, and just doesn't make much sense. Although I think for the average movie go-er this looks like it might be pretty neat, if they had based it off of Asimovs books without using the name, I proabably wouldnt care. But making a movie that seems to obviously have little to nothing with the short stories in the books (Appart from the one chapter about the nesters with a modified first law) makes me kinda mad.

If hollywood ever wanted to make another movie off of one of Asimovs books, in my opinoin it should be Prelude to Foundation.
