Okay here's yet another alternative, as suggested by a few people. The little LCD is on the side. It's kind of flimsily mounted, but that can easily change.
As for polycounts, they explain why I lean towards the option above. Without ANY LCD: 1766 With Side-mounted LCD: 2016 With cable and hand-held LCD: 2756 (the cable is a lot of polies ATM)
I haven't tried to optimize the cable or anything yet.
Edit: hrm... that LCD might be a little small. No matter, its easy to scale.
i like the 2nd version <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
i recently found out that scaling things in 3dsmax is actually very difficult. you could just highlight everything and scale it but then 3dsmax will forever display that the scale for an object is not 100% and that is really annoying. so instead everyone has to scale the vertices of all the seperate objects one by one which is very time consuming. my teacher recommends it also. 3dsmax is extremely annoying. that's why you keep finding people so reluctant to widen things or lengthen things or whatever. it's not as easy as you think.
how is the lcd so many polys? <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->
The LCD is so many because I haven't gone through and optimized it yet... it's just a default chamfer box with one face toyed with. I like the handheld version a tiny bit better I think, basically what Godhand said. I'll try and keep polies down in the pipe, and I can of course delete unseen polies once I get this into a v_model.
Okay time for the obligatory noob question <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Never having had to actually work with a model beyond the initial modelling stage... what do I do to get hands and stuff into it? I can UVW map it and I'm gonna take a crack at skinning it, but I just can't seem to find anything that says where to get the hands from.
Sorry for the stupid question, but I figure its best if I learn to do all of this myself, that way I can actually release some of these concepts I model <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
<!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo--> i looks like a paintball gun

Okay that's what I was thinking, just wanted to make sure it was the right thing... thanks Jimmeh <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Okay a new idea for the pad's cable... it was a crapload of polies to make it look okay as a dangling-hose-type thing, so, since this IS the future and we have nanites and stuff... the amazing technology of *wireless* communcations should be around. The polycount w/o the cable and with my new pad (same look pretty much, but built poly-by-poly since I couldn't figure out how the chamfer box was using 500+ polies, this one uses 150 in total for the whole thing) is 1746, which IMHO is more appealing than 2100-3000 :S
Nantite? Never heard of it <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

If you mean how's the palm pilot thing gonna be shown... I think it was going to be in the left hand, since the welder is kinda small and going to be in the right hand only.

well that palm pilot seems really small to be held. i would break that little thing. looks like its only an inch across. or 2.54 cm for you communist metric users out there.

ya you gotta get a pare of hands in there and show us the scale referance
the display is so small..why making a seperate device out of it.. just integrate it into the shield...like a hud... <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

we need a shot with some hands so we can get a scale on the baby
the idea behind the hand held data doolie, was to make it seem more "depthy" like its an actual device.
To me it looks great at the moment.
