<div class="IPBDescription">Yay! or Nay! ?</div> What do you think of it?
For these who do0nt know/havent tried. Lerk now flies upwards whenever you press jump nomatter where you aim...

I find this a bit annoying in a little room with a door not opening near the roof... your stuck up there with slow speed and if u press jump while aiming down u go up again :/

i really preferred the old lerk lift.. i think the fix is to keep lerklift exasctly as it was in beta 3 but take down the energy cost of flying.. not remove it, but just decrease it

really good, maybe even worth an "overpowered discussion".

    Ever seen lerk rushes?
Whenever marines get not a single shotgun a group of 6 lerks right next to marine spawn kickass.

    Speaking about NS only:

I think it's very good change. Previous lerk was generally not felt worth 30res, very few people got lerk, and if they did it was no fun for them, just some crappy support role. Now it's fine...
Lerk still dies in few lmg bullets or so and needs DC to be effective, rines are still capable of winning even against team that uses many lerks.

Lerks also make HG more viable option, definitely worth 20 res now..

it changed since b3? thats news to me, it wasnt in the changelog, the only thing to do with lerk flight was the loss of energy use

i havent noticed any difference either

How can anyone argue that the lerk is fine in beta 4?

For a start, the Lerk plays a more supportive role anyway - anyone who has played in any topflight wars will know that, and a lerk could always make the difference between a failed rush and a successful rush. In the few public games I've played, its Spore heaven, with everyone whoring into the unhittable.

The lerk should be used as a support tool - hence its umbra and spores, and it seems as though the lerk has become more 'newb-friendly.' The game should take skill to play, and lerk is a role that used to take skill to play as effectivley. Yes, fair enough - a skilled lerk will still be skilled in beta4, but they're going to be overshadowed by your average joe nubjin.

I just cannot see why the Lerk was even considered to be changed - Bring out the nerfstick and fix the damn class.

original poster: did you know that if you hold forward, the lerk flaps forward? All you need to take off is 1-3 upward flaps, then the rest should be done while holding forward. Point your nose down while forward flapping to dive!

You can say 3.0b's messed up a few things, but lerk flight is clearly a Good Thing.

Have you guys not yet seen "pancaking" lerks that flap up and crash down quicker then you can hit them? People are using bunnyhop aliases to make themselves nigh unhittable. Anything short of a good marine with a shotgun or a bunch of marines with machineguns will result in that lerk dominating. None of this is even taking into account umbra and celerity which makes it even crazier and damn near impossible to hit the lerks.

    Just things I've noticed.

Exactly what I was gonna say. This could really become a problem. If the lerk is by himself and you have at least lvl one weps you have a chance, but if he has any friends with him, then groups of marines will die without shotties. For something that can be had 5 res into the game thats a tad bit overpowered. And really this is just the early stages as I've only seen one lerk who can do this effectively, once really good players get their hands on this it will be a serious problem.

Possible solution would make flying take a little energy. Maybe try half of what it was before. Btw I miss the quick release betas as I know we will be dealing with this for a long time before it's fixed.

I haven't played enough games pre b4 games as a regular lerk to really comment, but the funny thing is I went lerk for maybe the 3rd time yesterday and I got around 5 kills...meh good times <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Lerks in 3.4 Are <b>WAY WAY WAY</b> overpowered. Even thats an understatement.

The previous version in B3.3 Was far better, lerk was used by good clans and players, just nubs that thought "OMG THIS IS TO HARD TO USE" for some reason get it changed. The new lerks are pathetic. i would say definately restore them back to their previous version. Not using adrenaline whilest flying it stupid... its like saying fades dont need it when blinking?! is this what will come next!!! bloody looks like it from my point of view. No way can u say they are fair, and balanced. I thought 3.3 was a good version of the game just needed a lot of bug fixes, ie HLTV. Now, combat is screwed, because with a good team of rines and aliens its Very Very tough for rines to win! Games are still going on for 30 mins + tho, so the new spawn system hasnt helped either.

    *edit*
So a big no no on lerks, restore them to their last version plzkthx

Nerf pan caking, don't nerf the lerk to using adrenaline while flying.

Biting+Flying with a lerk in 3.0 is sadistically difficult and hard, I'll explain why.

Even if the marine is by himself if you idiotically don't spore him afar but instead try to bite him....

(Note, the marine has CS aim and the lerk isn't pancaking)

The lerk will be screwed if the marine even has armor 1 in 3.0 if he even dared to melee fight, if you don't fly so you can get a hit on the marine you will die ever so easily against the LMG. The only unique situations is in a massive room where you can hide after nearly dieing to regenerate.

The lerk is fine now in my opinion, now they have a chance to use bite without having to take adrenaline every single time. (Besides pan caking...)

Nerfing lerk flight yet again will make the lerk quite useless (AKA 3.0 lerk) besides for hiding in a vent and sporing pub marines that stay at their base to die by your fumes. The lerk needs the second hive to be combat efficient, but it's usually to dangerous (HMGs, shotties) so the lerk usually never uses bite, the 1.4 bite was to good, this bite is decent but lacks a lot compared to spikes.

Also, you have to admit sporing and umbraing in a NS game all game long is boring as you literally flee at the sight of 2 marines, there trying to make the lerk somewhat useable melee wise.

What I'm saying is, give the lerk something to do besides sporing.

I've never seen a 5 lerk rush (assuming one gorges) but it sounds easily countered by aggressive shotty/LMG groups with 1-2 welders so you can keep armor up.

Even though the lerk is a supporter, the gorge has bile bomb so, giving spikes instead of bite or something would be a fine exchange for a minium nerf to flight.

Well i know its hard to hit such lerk, and no you dont need scripts to do that, just pressing buttons fast is enough..

But still.. lerk is just only worth that 30 res, and needs some good skill to be able to do such maneuvers while doing more damage than occasional spores..

Nothing seems to point out that lerks need nerf, they were simply not fun to play before..

Fades in hands of skilled player can do much more damage than lerk..

The lerks are fine in this version, i can easily kill a lerk with LMG + lvl 1 weapon upgrades or a shotty or hmg or a pistol. The Lerks arent inivincible, their very easy to shoot down, it just requires skill to kill "pancaking" lerk.
  • XenoXeno Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2343Members
yeah, it takes skill. i will agree with that. but it also takes power. and when you have 7 lerks in the first 2 minutes of the game, then yeah, your "skill" means nothing. either boost cost of lerk or nerf the damn energy. this pancaking crap is getting ridiculous.

I think that andrenaline cost for spores should be raised now that lerk flight doesnt cost anything.

Can someone teach me how to pancake fly as Lerk? I have mousewheel bound to jump so I can fly UP really quickly, but I still seem to fall down slowly.

To fly down, you look down, hold forward and flap. Mousewheel works fine if you look straight down enough. I don't understand where people are having problems with this, and I haven't at all noticed that Lerks get more lift now.

Pancaking needs a nerf for reasons that are relatively obvious. Even beyond that though I think Lerk flight cost needs to be brought back, if a little less than it was before. Besides pancaking, with new flight there's no finesse in Lerk flight. There's no point to gliding; people constantly spam the flap button in order to maintain max speed and it's just stupid. A small energy cost needs to be maintained in order to discourage people from flapping their brains out, but it should be small enough to be basically free to someone who knows how to fly properly.

Beta 3 lerkflight was ovely glide-required, which made unsuspecting players think that lerk was total crap; all they actually had to do was hold the jump key to glide. Thus, the devs caved and made lerkflight require no energy. Now we have "pancake" manouvers and no one glides.

Going from a somewhat intensive energy cost to no cost at all is dangerous and irresponsible "ballancing" technique. You dont go from Extreme A to Extreme B and then go to the center with players suffering throughout <b>2 long</b> alterations to one system. You <i>ease</i> into a comfortable position in gradual steps of testing, releasing the median of the two extremes. <b>If you can see one extreme (Beta 3 energy cost) and the other extreme (Beta 4 no energy cost) <i>why</i> even bother choosing either of them?</b> Just to see? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Have the lerk flight energy cost between Beta 3's energy cost, and Beta's 4 no energy cost. This way you can allow lerks to flap like crazy for a short period of time, but they'll need to rest for a short while; as well as keeping glide useful. If they flap too much and expend all their energy in "Pancake flying" then the marine's LMG/shotgun will have a chance to do damage to the lerk.

    Look at it this way:
    - Extreme A - Lerks were expending far too much energy flapping around to even bite a marine once or twice in Beta 3. [always/almost always gliding]
    - Extreme B - Lerks are flapping around at insane vertical speeds due to the non-existant cost of energy in Beta 4. [never/rarely gliding]

Too bad we'll have to suffer through this beta. Meh, maybe there's a way to counter pancake flying... then again, probably not. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Lurks dont have a problem moving around, it's once they want to do something --none of their abilitys are that great.

I just thought of a solution to bunnyhopping and pnacking at once. Blobk all scripts with +jump in them. The only ones that use it are duckjump and +3jump. It is incredibly hard to bhop with out +3jump (which is what make lerks pancake 3jumps are registered for lerk making it go up really fast.) Skulks and gorges would need a speed increase (massive) without bhopping, but overall it would balance the playing field. And yes I do know how to bhop and right now I do use a +3jump script to bhop.
