How about for free?
Tribes 2 website.
Sierra are releasing Tribes one and two for free. Downloadable from Fileplanet or from the cover discs of Computer Gaming World magazine on the fourth of May.
If you're not familar with the Tribes franchise here's a quick rundown:
Three classes, light, medium and heavy. Lights are fast and can carry sniper rifles. Heavies are slow and can carry mortars but they can't drive vehicles.
There are a number of vehicles, both ground and air. Tanks, bombers, transports, gravbikes and fighters.
There are also backpacks, mines, grenades, deployable turrets and a shonky command interface.
Pretty much CTF all the way though.
Woo! I bought Tribes one and played it to death. I never got around to playing Tribes 2 however. This should be the ideal time. We should organise a NS forumite game or two sometime. ^_^

it didn't have the fun defend and destroy game mode tribes1 had,
thats mainly what brought me to playing it 1 or 2 times only.
Talking about Tribes1, i found this AWESOME mod, i played it for ages on LAN,
its basiclly the same game, but u have more buildings, more kind of turrents and stuff, and u can carry buildings as a light armor unit.
i remmember building 999 secret bases (and AIR bases !) around my brothers' main base with tones of sensory jammers, turrents, mega shield walls and stuff. Fun.
the mod is called Annihilation, and you can get it here:
http://www.annihilation.info/downloads.php (the version i've played was 1.31, but now i can see there are new versions, anyway i really recommend playing 1.31)
if ur going to play tribes1, be sure to grab this mod. its a must have !
Oh and I'll thank everyone not to say "olo tribes 2 sucked bigtime" without providing any supporting evidence. From what I've seen it looks quite enjoyable.

i hated server mods too, but this mod i posted about it is outstanding.
about tribes2, it didnt 'suck', but it was just a CTF or a teamdeatchmatch game,
what was so good about tribes 1, was that gamemode - defend and destroy.
they kinda took it out in tribes2, making it a good game with good visuals, nice vehicles, with no interesting game mode. It was just plain team deathmatch or ctf.
and you can't know how a game is until you play it, i thought i was enjoyable too, thats why i bought it, but what can we do, gameplay > visuals.
I was one of the first to put the rather obvious dive-bombing technique to use on the servers where I played when I first got it.
Then, when I couldn't find any good teams to bomb with, I got EXTREMELY good with the shrikes.
I'm sorry, but no gaming experience has EVER come close to the serene yet destructive feelings I got while listening to "Garbage" (The band) whilst flying through the lowlands, popping above the horizon only for brief seconds to literally RAM the heavies that would camp outside their base with rocket launchers trying to take out our bombers. Nothing quite surprised those guys and elicited such flavorful chat messages than when they would go from 100% health to dead in the blink of an eye because of my super stealthy skills
Then I came across a mod, I forget exactly what it was called. I think it was "Aerial Dogfight" which was a sub-mode of bonesmod.
That was pure enjoyment, served up on a silver platter.
Too bad the game as a whole lost interest. I was actually thinking of installing it again and starting up soon while I had the summer off from school and only had to hold a normal job
same here, i didnt get 2 because i was poor D: oh well now its free.
renegade and ultra renegade? these were also a very cool mod, you had all sorts of cool sheet
Luckily i've already got both of them and they both own

You played Aerial Dogfight in Tribes 2? Damn that was the only reason I played it. I'm actually in one of the few tribes for it called Elite Pilots.
I think I might download part one to see if it's fun though
I also got pretty proficient at kamikaze attacks with the vehicles on the enemy base too... minus the part where I die =P
ROFL
more like 100x worse!
Hey now, all sequels are supposed to be 100x better... whether they are or not is a different story
EDIT: And UNLIKE HL2, we know they can't mess up the release date that badly.
Yeah, another aerial dogfight bonesmod player here.
Tribes 2 was really enjoyable, but I guess I need to download the first one so I can see if it stands up to the hype.
Too many mods were actually a problem for T2 - most of them sucked and it fractured the community into little splinters doing their own thing, so there were no servers, and thus no players. I was one of the few people who loved base gameplay, but could never find populated servers after the first few months after T2's release.
Oh yeah. I found this screenie (admittedly probably edited) on my hard drive:

I think this picture sums up what I love about Tribes.
I must say i always liked the stealth element of this game, it limited you in the fact you could not stay cloaked for to long and had to find a place to recharge.
Shame i was always the person placing turrets lol
If your not such a fan off the attacking elements of the game you can always try the construction mod, no fighting at all instead you build bases, bars, pubs anything else you wish. It works really well
edit:...lmfao. I say that and it shows up. I AM TEH WINNAR!!
Get 'em while the gettin's good, boys!!
Edit: Spell-oh! (Thanks Flint!)

QUOTE

The Tribes RPG mod plays like most current MMORPG games but is hosted by anyone with a computer. This popular mod is still rigorously played even today. You can host your own server and become a DM. Or you can join someone elses server and do the main quest or participate in quests that your DM sets up. Besides the main goal of becoming the most powerful player on the server you can try to become the best in over 25 different skills.
In addition to this Total Conversion several people have created modifications to the original Tribes RPG to make it even more diverse. Each modification to Tribes RPG has several unique characteristics that make them fun and entertaining.

The community is pretty horrible, but the sheer amount of work put in creating a total conversion from tribes1 to something similar to everquest is amazing. castle screeny: http://www.planettribes.com/hosed/images/levels/keep1.jpg
As soon as you find one, please, post it here. If you find two, the party just gets better
