<div class="IPBDescription">Screenshots included.</div> I've just played ns_bast on lightgamma 5.
It adds such a deeper dept of realism due to enhanced lighting.
Just look at the screenshots yourself.

Edit: Wow, the compression took out all the quality.
Check out bast yourself with lightgamma 5, you'll see.

Screenshot 5 looks the best.
Ok I'll say that SS 5 looks kinda nice.
Screenshot 5 uncompressed.
2.25 MB, 56kers beware.
Edit: BTW, shadows on the models with lightgamma 5 look <b>gorge</b>ous.
Lightgamma 5 = Natural Selection + Silent Hill.
I can totally imagine picture five with fan blade shadows whirling in the small patches of light. SEXY.
I might play with lightgamma 5 a couple of rounds just to scare myself.
Any other wierd tricks like this? Can you make it a server variable? :D
My settings also add a deeper depth of realism due to the lighting! See for yourself.

your avatar makes this funnier 10 fold <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
On the other hand, matchbox's screenshots are dramatic (since we're on the route of changed lighting = drama) AND you can see skulks.
MATCHBOX = WINNAR GG.
marines had to travel thru all the hives with skulks ambushing along the way
totally differnt game and very creepy and fun. with silence its even scarier. you would just see these shadows scurry around. even in close combat it was hard to keep your eyes on the skulks and would see the flashing around. you had to just guess where to shoot sometimes.
give it a try its fun. bast and nothing are the best for this
Not that I play Ns anymore. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Aye, though i dont play competitvely (im far closer to the cs clan community than the ns one) I wish i was a nub things were so much more scarier back then.
But add in scattered light, and real-time sources... <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I always play on max gamma ( 20 ; after this nothing more changes) and my screen is as dark as in the topic 1. post !!
help mee !!!
bzw. now I know how some guys see me sitting in dark corners..
When did any of that change then CWAG? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
The original screenshots in the first post look very tastefull, exciting and dramatic. That's great if you want to make a creepy movie to capture the feel of ns. If you want to play an actual game, waddling around in the dark might prove a big handicap.
All in all, it depends on personal preferences, but I prefer playing with "normal" lighting and gamma. So definately not the high gamma pics and I can't say I would want to play ns with the first screenies either.

<span style='color:white'>Saracasm readings bursting the scale, sir!</span>
And that isn't part of the atmosphere of NS?
I keep my gamma at a quasi-normal level, I had no idea what the game looked like jacked up like that, wow that's a huge advantage..
you say that like a bad thing lol <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Generally, I guess it's up to the designers own tastes; I know a bunch of people who can't stand high contrasts at all.
In order for such dark maps to work both teams would need some vision improvements. Alien flashlight working on marines would get the job done, but the marine flashlight would need some major revamps so it's actually useful for lighting up skulks(and so it doesn't show up as a big sphere of light around the marine to everyone else), which is probably not easy at all for the HL engine.
its better that way
You said it yourself. Believe me, I'd love to see a little SC:PT infused into NS, but unfortunately, the HL engine sets close limitations to that.

This is when we all cross our fingers <i>REAL</i> tight and pray the dev team makes a new NS based off the HL2 engine. I don't mean porting it (altho the CS2 port screenshots look hot), I mean really just make the modnew for it. Even as insane as it would be.
I really look forward to actually (a) using the full potential of my vid card while playing NS, and (b) seeing what the dev team can do with all the incredible lighting effects and variables that can be tweaked in the HL2 engine <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
