War Craft 3

Looking for some info
So yah, one of my housemates just bought a WC3 pack (wc3 and TFT) and just started playing online.

I also ... borow it... yah....

so, a few things:
1) Are there any good sites of replays? (I honestly suck at the game, and just sorta like watching other people play )

2) Is there a good site(s) for custom maps and such?

3) This one is more on a game my house mate jsut played.
His opponent insisted on building 4+ anchients of war, no hunters hall or anything else. All he built was a demon hunter, archers, and whisps.

He lost horribly. What I was wondering is if this is a (bad) varient on an actual strat?

it seamed like he was trying to zerg rush... (first person to say kekeke or ^___^ gets stabed, in the face, with a rusty spoon).
But zerg rush with archers is stupid....

well, thanks for any help

Just to let you know: There are no good custom maps widely available for Warcraft 3. And tbh, I wouldn't play with just anyone- cheating is horribly common on there(oh yeah, your whole base is built in 3 minutes with every building and 5 of each unit type? Sure!), and very few people who are new to the game still play due to a) cheaters, or b) the really experienced people who would whoop your bum anyway.

I reccommend doing lots of scrimmage, and then challenge friends.

Upgrades are key in WC3: TFT but not a requirement like in RoC.

Here is a simple noob strat for you to play around with as undead

Right off the bat send 2 acolytes to the gold mine. Send your ghoul to collect lumber. Your third acolyte should go construct 2 crypts, then a ziggaurat. Send him to your goldmine till you get 75 gold, train another acolyte, then train a fifth immediately. After you have 5 acolytes in your haunted gold mine Send one to contruct an Alter of darkness, and have your crypts make 2 ghouls. Send them to the lumber. Construct a graveyard, then train a Death Knight. When he is done give him unholy aura, and begin training crypt fiends and go creep. The strat is based on spamming crypt fiends (build a million of 1 type of unit strats usually don't work in the frozen throne and this is a rare exception) Its a fun simple strat to get you started. Remember, creeping is KEY to success. The hero is the backbone of your army.

sorry, this was actualy a RoC game.

Thanks for the stuff (I had no intent on playing on BNet, and the other 2 in the house were impressed with his daring/lack of brains to go on there).

Any one know a site for replays? (I just sorta like watching them, I guess I am wierd like that )

Shows how much you know. WC3 and its expansion have some damn fine custom maps. It all depends on what you like.

To the fast building: Ever thought you were on a custom map with accelerated build speeds/reduced costs/etc.? Don't be so quick to accuse. The worst I've seen on Battle.net are people that leave during the launch countdown, and disconnecters. WC3 is the only game that continually pulls me back to play, a title previously held by Half-Life.

Shameless Plug: If you have The Frozen Throne, download and play The Ring Wars custom map. Based on the War of the Ring, nuff said.

Infoceptor is pretty good, I believe they have a replay archive in the forums somewhere, and the map archive there is great ( even though the ones I submitted got lost in a server crash ). They have a map of the week well.. every week.

Shows what I know? I'm talking REGULAR custom maps, not the "OH LOOK AT THIS SPECIAL GAMETYPE I MADE HAHA LOLZ ITS A RPG, DIABLO GOT NUTIN ON DIS HAHAHAHA!" or the standard "Build a bajillion of these units, try and make sure these other units won't make it through, repeat, repeat, repeat". During my long time of playing and praying the community would change, I gave up hope, saying "Why is the RTS dying...?"

"Regular" custom maps can still have altered rules and settings, can never be sure without opening it in the editor. Just cause it looks like a melee map doesn't mean it is...

Most of the time you should be able to get some replays from players like [4K]Grubby. or some others.

    BTW, RoC is teh outdated.

PS Quaunaut, Planet Warcraft is dead. I don't know why it's still up. Heck, the pictures of the Shadow Hunter are from the beta -_____-

Quaunaut for all that is holy go easy on the whole "Battle net is full of cheaters" thing. I mean, I know a lot of really incredible RTS (more specifically Starcraft and Warcraft) players who would take offense to that. I mean, some of those people are quite honorable, even if they usually become arrogant. Perhaps you have had some bad experiences with some really good players, that is no reason to take it out on the entire community. There are some fast builders out there. believe it or not. I'm not an RTS genius like most of them, but I have seen it in action, literally watching other people play from over their shoulders don't ya know.

As for the custom map thing, there are plenty of serious custom maps, but there are many many non serious ones. And many of those non-serious ones are REALLY bloody addictive and extremely fun. Spellcraft anyone? I went a whole month just playing WC3:TFT for that map, on the occaisions I got a chance to play it at all. Sure there are some stupid ones, but they are completely out populated by the good ones I assure you.

What I hate about WC3 is the insane high hp each unit has. An orc grunt, the orcs standard unit, takes about 60 or so arrows from a Night Elf Archer, the night elves standard untit....

There are some good things about WC3, but the focus on heroes is not one of them. That said there are some things that are good for strategy, sush as the flying/ground differences and the variety of spells and abilitys.

And cost 3 times as much? Sweet jesus, if you have the same number of archers as an Orc player has grunts, you've been doing something horribly wrong. You should never let him get that many grunts.

WC3 is all about putting pressure on your opponent, and fast. I don't care if you don't like to rush, because if you're playing arranged games and aren't on the offensive as soon as you possibly can be, you're going to lose. Get creeping with your hero as soon as he's done, and rally units to him. Then when he's up a few levels and you have a decent sized force, check out your enemy, see if you can kill something that's building, or take out some workers, et cetera.
  • BlindFireBlindFire Join Date: 2003-03-28 Member: 14986Members
I have dont care about the unit costs, 60 arrows is waaaaaaay to much. It was the high hp i general I complain about, it prevents you from having using any mass destruction tactics (sush as ally yourself with 2 others and each gets a blood mage and cast flame strike in one spot), even if hurt the units horribly they will just run away, if you are lucky you might get a few of them with some slowing abilitys.

I prefer battles with more units that die faster, and it would be good if the large battles in WC3 was not so uber chaotic.

It's to give the players a chance to respond. Besides which, archers simply aren't meant to be able to take down grunts on their own. They're support, and anti-air. Pit a force of just grunts against a mix of archers and huntresses and you'll see a marked difference. The same goes for flame strike, it's not meant to wipe out armies on its own. Three flame strikes at once is murder, though. I don't know what you mean there, since the victim usually can't take much more after that. It really softens the enemy up, but you're better off with changing a BM for an archmage with blizzard and his aura as well.

Hero harassment can be fun - a KotG can kill a peon with one use of Entangling Roots, and doing so usually makes the enemy stop what they're doing and try to kill the hero. It's a great way to throw them off their game.

Units still have too much health, WC3 is balanced for that amount of health and all so that is good, I just dont find units living so long in the heat of battle fun.

    So true.

Some newer RTS games I do like:
C&C: Generals (Although that you cannot disable Super Weapons sucks)
Spellforce (Multiplayer sucks big time though, but the sp campign is about 100 hours)

Blindfire man, you have to remember the only reason why Blizzard decided to make all units have large amounts of health, in comparison to their attack damages, is so that people can "micromanage" their battles.

Dunno if you realize this, but this gives regular folks like you and I a chance against insanely quick opponents. Back in the days of starcraft, people who could micromanage the battles, those few elite people who could literally issue orders to each unit on an individual basis within a huge group, in the space of only a few milliseconds was always the guy who won the battle. I had a friend who had the courtesy of playing South Korea's #1 starcraft player on several occaisions, and while watching, he realized that this guy controlled each unit like it had a mind of its own, and was able to ensure 100% efficiency on an INDIVIDUAL BASIS.

To be honest, your average player simply cannot do this. It is impossible for most people, and thus it is a level of enjoyment from the game which we will never be able to experience.

So by increasing the hitpoints of all the units, battles are effectively slowed down so that we CAN micromanage the battles and get a lot more efficiency out of each unit and have time to efficiently use spells.

    I hate micromanagement...

I would like to see something in an RTS that allows you to set up custom AI routines for units, removing most micromanaging.

Edit: Oh and thats why I got bored of Starcraft, and like spellforce (minimum micromanagement). There aint much micromanagement in C&C: Generals either, with the exception of ordering certain types of units to target certain types of units but thats where squads come in, but the average joe dosent relize this I guess.

Since I have nothing to do this summer I have started making a (amaterish) mod for WCIII, we will see how it turns out.

Actually Starcraft doesnt force the player to micromanage at all like WC3 does, but that skill is vital to winning in nearly every RTS on the planet. The more efficiency you can squeeze out of your fighting force, the more awesome you are.

^ Exactly what I was saying. ^ Starcraft didn't force you to micromanage battles, but if you want to be any good at all at it, your going to have to do so.
