    I dunno about gnome (hate it, never install it), but in KDE you can right click the panel (taskbar like doohickey) and theres a "size" menu. And grats on trying out linux... it rocks <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    yarrr it does. Except for hardware support...

    I just got done burning my FC2 CD's and I am in the process of 'buying' <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> Partition Magic to re-partition my drive...

    Forgot to ask - how do I go about creating a FAT32 partition which both windows(2000) and linux can read/write from ?
  • Dorian_GrayDorian_Gray Join Date: 2004-02-15 Member: 26581Members, Constellation
    Partition magic. Or, conversely, format an already existing partition to fat32. BTW: The 2.6 kernel, combined with a driver called Captive, can read AND write NTFS partitions. I googled FC2 and it seems to ship with the 2.6 kernel, but I dunno about Captive. It uses the drivers that are shipped with windows to write to the partition, because it couldn't legally distribute the drivers. I've never encountered a reason to use it (until this summer, when I plan to install Gentoo on the spare 80GB drive I have in this comp and rig it for gaming - see the kotor thread for desired results).

    Hrm. Further googling reveals a linux equivalent for partition magic, called "GNU parted". It has a frontend QParted (for a GUI).

    It took me two days to figure out how to access my second hd on red hat 9 =/

    Im curious about fedora core, is it less reliant on the console? Dos was a no-brainer as I grew up on it, but the linux console confuses me.

    If you grew up with DOS then the linux console isn't hard to adapt to, since some commands are the same (although, whenever I use command prompt in windows I always type 'ls' now >_<)

    Me too... annoys me. That and the fact that I always use / instead of \ and type "cp" and "mv". Stupid windows... getting everything wrong <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I can navigate around the console, only I don't know all of the arguments such as -v and -l and what exactly they do when I ask how to do something and I get a reply like 'WTHbbqogmmissleroflroptor23092309-2323.232a -vlpsaierkjaj'.

    so, run the command with -h

    it tells you what each thingie does. I just re-partitioned and made a 15 gig partition for FC2. It'll get bigger as soon as I know it'll work online with my Linksys WUSB11 v2.1 wlan adapter.

    Yay! It killed Windows!!! <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    If I can get the wlan driver working so I can move my computer out of my moms room where the cable modem is, I'll consider switching over.

    Meh, I got a lot of work to do...

    is there some way to play games such as HL and steam in general on Linux? I mean sure Linux is a big plus for the geek factor but otherwise I don't see why I should change. Apart from Unreals I don't see what games I could play on Linux easily (that's without Wine)

    No way <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I got mandrake 10.0, and i tryed out alot of distributions (using linux for about a year) like manny redhats, manny mandrakes, suses, slackware and of course knoppix <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I didn't like redhat after all! They had some major problems getting some mp3 encoder on one of those 3 damn huge cd's... They were afraid of some licence problems so you allways had to bind in some basic stuff as a mp3 encoder manually....
    I don't know if it changed now with fedora but i will stick with my mandrake now <3

    BTW you use external tools for prepartitioning? i don't know but my mandrake got a built in partitioner which can resize NTFS....

    Meh, I can't get the kernel to re-compile... make menuconfig, make xconfig etc. don't work...

    I found my Win XP CD, but not my Win 98 CD which I need to install XP (Upgrade version...)

    Yea, if I can't get my wlan driver working under Linux, I'm screwed...
  • jumpingjodajumpingjoda Join Date: 2003-12-14 Member: 24367Members, Constellation, Reinforced - Shadow
    Why? did you delited your winXP install?
  • CabooseCaboose title = name(self, handle) Join Date: 2003-02-15 Member: 13597Members, Constellation
    because the boot record got messed up and I couldn't fix it. I had to do a low level format to make the HD usable.
  • jumpingjodajumpingjoda Join Date: 2003-12-14 Member: 24367Members, Constellation, Reinforced - Shadow
    OMG !!!
    That was so wrong...
    Stick in a win98 boot floppy and do "fdisk /mbr"
    it should be clear then and the win partition should boot... happened to me few times....
    If you would want to fix the mbr to run both partitions, stick in the first redhat(or whatever) cd and just skip all the way 'till you get to the bootload install....

    Easy as 1337... <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    There are some things in a linux system that may seem harmless... but while your'e changing them your system sings "Its the final countdown..."

    like recompiling the kernel?

    /me is recompiling kernel

    If I can get it to use my Linksys WUSB11 Wlan adapter, I will use Linux. yay.
  • jumpingjodajumpingjoda Join Date: 2003-12-14 Member: 24367Members, Constellation, Reinforced - Shadow
    Hmm not really. Recompiling the kernel is not a big deal, if it fails you got your old kernel which works. I thought about some mean configs. when i started i just hated when i screw up the x11 config and then tryed to find and edit it without any gui.
  • CabooseCaboose title = name(self, handle) Join Date: 2003-02-15 Member: 13597Members, Constellation
    Fedora is pretty nubproof tho <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> /me loves it.

    After I get done recompiling, I'm going to hopefully get my wlan driver working, get out of my mom's room and get my games set up.

    As I've heard, BFV workes under Winex and Steam can run under linux too, so I'm happy.
  • jumpingjodajumpingjoda Join Date: 2003-12-14 Member: 24367Members, Constellation, Reinforced - Shadow
    Be warned, wine can be a pain in the a$$.
    You should maybe buy the winex binary... saves alot of work work work, but this is what linux is about... Learning by doing.
