*cries a river*
So NS looks like crap on D3D for me, and I put it on OpenGL.
Now most of the game is smooth as silk... but some maps murder my comp.
Certain hives or areas drop my FPS from about 90 to literally 2 or 3. The sound gets choppy. Basically, I become bait. You can imagine how this affects my aim or even my ability to notice an enemy standing in front of me.
WHAT FIXES THIS? Is there a way at all? Is it just the maps? Or am I just stuck with D3D forever?

what kind of system do you have?

Gah, ATI cards and Vsync off in half-life... bad combo. VERY BAD. Lets hope he has an old nvidia.
A better video card would probably be a sound investment, given that 16MB cards were around the TNT or TNT2 era. Hiverooms (and Marine Spawn) tend to be built in a lot. All those extra structures are additional polys, which could quite likely be killing a slower card.

And yes, I could play AvP2 perfectly with my old onboard card. Personally I blame Steam, as "normal" HL runs perfectly. Go figure.
You could probably even get a card significantly better than what you have now for free. People throw that stuff away, particularly businesses, or that friend of yours who just spent $300-500 on a shiny top of the line card.
