Why in the world is he using PVC, compressed air and ethanol of all things?
Kerosene is much much better, it won't burn at all unless you have a wick(...clothing ought to be a good wick <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo--> ...) or you vaporize it or you make it form lots of tiny driplets(which should happen here). You can put out a match easily in kerosene.
Kerosene would go much much farther as it would stay like a blob for longer, and assuming the heat from the smallest driplets which ignite immideately when they pass the "pilot light" is enough to ignite the rest of the fuel(works for a regular water spray bottle for plants, even when using the beam instead of spray, you get a 1-2 m flame thrower at most. Hopefully this scales up)it will have a brighter more orange looking flame and it won't continue burning when it hits something unless it acts like a good wick(which is a reason the military would rather have petroleum jelly or something for a flame thrower).
I cannot see why he went with PVC instead of some random steel containers(one for pressurized gas, preferably not air, and at least one for fuel).
I'd say he went for PVC because its not as heavy as steel, and it's easier to work with (you dont need to weld stuff).
He used compressed air because it is the easiest way that I can think of to get pressure on something homemade.
He is using ethanol because it is not expensive to get and highly flammable. Somehow I don't really grasp the meaning of your second paragraph, but 1-2 meters would be about 3-6 ft, and in my book, this flame way longer than that, and the flamethrower appears to be working just fine.

You DON'T want highly flamable. If you do use highly flamable stuff it won't go very far, it will be needlessly dangerous, especially considering PVC which tends to form sharp shards when broken and pressurized ethanol/air mixtures which tend to explode when ignited, I wouldn't be surprised if PVC shards from that tank could kill him if it explodes(which it is much more likely to do when empty), he didn't even use one of those one-way safety valves that gas stoves use. Ethanol contains quite a good bit less energy per mass than kerosene and other hydro carbons and does not burn nearly as bright(no incandecent particles of soot?). Last time I looked kerosene is quite a bit cheaper(especially that stuff used to light the barbaque and in the summer time when it is extra cheap, this is allmost cheaper than regular gasoline).
Properly welded steel would be much more leak proof, much less likely to sustain chemical damage from the fuel(such as softening) and much more heat resistant.

Not if you look at trash as an alternative, I imagine there's lots of usable items such as a small old/barely working/broken compressor(with a tank suitable for high pressures), old empty propane tank, old CO2 tank, old CO2 fire extinguisher etc. Even a ~10 l (what's the word I'm looking for...) stainless steel sauce pan with a lid(which isn't all that expensive) is a much better alternative than PVC. What do you value most, a very real threat to your life and 20$ less in costs or the other way around?
Besides who doesn't have/know someone who has a small arc welding unit of some kind? You shouldn't even need to use an inert gas with stainless steel. I do believe you could solder it as well if you use some thick tin/silver solder wire and a blow torch and you have lots of surface area where the parts meet.(this metal is often used to repair sauce pans and such items that come in contact with food and water and is a pure metal alloy).
I can't get the Cannon video from the 16th page to work. I don't have the proper decoder to play the video, but the sound works. Help please? Also about the gauss cannon mentioned earlier, this is something I'd love to make, assuming you are talking about the gauss cannon as basically a cannon that uses magnets to fire stuff. Here's a simply diagram of what I'd do if I was making it. The red boxes are electromagnets, the blue wire the power supply, and the blue box the CPU that controls when each magnet is fired. I'd also look into putting in a magnet at the rear to push. The Gaus gun I had in mind actually only uses a single magnet. I was inspired after my physics teacher showed us a very not-powerful version which used an aluminum ring around a bunch of Iron wires. Around the bottom of the wired was a large copper coil electromagnet, when the magnet was turned on, the ring around the wires would shoot up. What I planned to do was instead of having a ring around the wires make it a ball bearing inside of the ring, and maybe up the voltage or amperage to the copper coil or make the coil itself bigger, not sure which would have the desired affect. A friend of mine tried it out, but he upped the amperage too much and the coil fried out immediately.

If you use an aluminum ring chilled with liquid nitrogen and use a thick wired copper coil with an iron core connected directly to mains via an extension cord preferably with a lit switch and fuse you can make a ~100 g aluminum ring fly 5-10 meters into the air(230 V here <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->, you trip the fuse allmost instantly so you have to reset it/them before you try again. Well tripping the breaker isn't that much of a problem, just put in a bigger breaker. And more hight could be acheived using a transformer (heck they're simple enough to make if you don't have the money) to up the amperage or the voltage (I'm not sure which would work in this case, don't know much about magnetism).
For best results with a weapon like that (whether it be a railgun, coilgun, or gaussgun) you would be best off using capacitors. That way you just charge those suckers up and when they fire you can easily get upwards of 10k volts with big enough ones or large enough banks.
I actually had planed to build a semi auto railgun, using compressed co2 to shoot the actual projectiles into the rails( if you look it up you will find certain projectiles have a habit of sticking to the rails) and having a laser eye that would fire the capacitors when the projectile came close enough to the rails. Then you just get some kind of springloaded tube to drop the projectiles infront of the compressed air piece and say good bye to anything infront of the rails.

Then you just get some kind of springloaded tube to drop the projectiles infront of the compressed air piece and say good bye to anything infront of the rails.
