1) Remove the scope from the LMG. Yes, it does look cool. However there are going to be an awful lot of new players who will automatically think that they have a sniper rifle and when they find out they don't will be rather annoyed and leave.
2) Stress the importance of commanding. A simple help dialoge pop-up saying "Commanding should only be tried after extensive experiance", or something to that effect. Additionally, try and explain that it is crucially important that the commander be obeyed. Something like "You will only recieve high tech weapons and equipment if the Commander wants you to have them, so it is in your best interest to follow his orders"
3) A slew of little bug fixes. Waypoints being the largest one. Playing on servers with the fixed waypoint mod is like playing NS all over again. It's brilliant; you know exactly what your commander wants you to do. This would help new players tremendously.
4) Natural Selection is a team-based game. People used to the individualism of CS and to a lesser extend DoD have to be informed that teamwork is the path to victory in NS. Work as a team and you'll thrash the pants off a team of individually minded players.
5) The importance of resources. Cap and hold res points. If you're an alien, talk to your team about how your resources should be spent. If you're a marine, just do what your commander says; he'll take care of the res.
Points 2, 4 and 5 both work off a simple principle: the vast majority of players in games want to win and have fun. Jetpacks/HA/hmgs/GLs/Fades/Onos = fun. To get these, you need res, for which you need: Teamwork = win. It's quite simple. Once new players understand this, I have no doubt that they will adapt very quickly and become excellent at NS.
Are we sure that everyone with steam will see this in the My Games section? I was under the impression that when you downloaded it, then it would appear there. Makes a huge difference, being that all them cs'ers will not see it if they still have to download the mod.

The devs can do a lot to make the game more newbie friendly without touching game mechanics. Improving the ingame help messages would do a lot toward that goal. For example: <ul><li>Gorge stands in front of res node. <i>"<res node description> Place a Resource Tower (Menu->Build->...), then build it by holding your use key. <res tower description>"</i> </li><li>Marine is switches weapon to LMG. <i>"<LMG description and stats> The scope-looking device is actually an anti-recoil device, not a scope."</i></li><li>Player goes into right-click menu and hovers over any leaf node in the menu such as "Morph to Onos" or "Call for medpack". Let's say the player's cursor hovers over "Jetpack" (combat mode). <i>"<jetpack description and stats including combat cost> Selecting this upgrade will give you a jetpack."</i></li><li>Commander hovers over Jetpack icon on the equip menu. <i>"<jetpack description and stats> Click to grab a jetpack to give to one of your soldiers."</i> Once the commander is "holding" the jetpack: <i>"<jetpack description and stats> Click anywhere within the map or directly onto a marine. The jetpack will then be purchased and "dropped". Press ESC to cancel."</i></li></ul> These will be the default ingame help messages. They can be set to be less verbose (to the current help messages) or disabled. This option should be included in the option menu, not just a console command.
yes, new autohelp pop ups are a must. I found some hugely detailed ones in some of the .txt files in my ns folder some time ago, I dont think they are in the game. Would be good to alter them to the recent release and then put them in.
It would also be nice if cl_autohelp 0 actually worked and stopped telling me what an armoury is too.

Overall though, the NS community will get a large boost in population, and these new players will need to be delt with. It is human nature to res ****, and human nature to get mad, so we just have to understand that they are learning the game. Saving up / not dropping res is just a phase.. that their aim sucking, or not knowing the map is just a phase. If we treat them well, 6 months down the road these players will realise that someone has to drop the node, and that they shouln't be selfish. Their aim will get better, and they will know the maps. The only way to get them to get to that point is to nurture them when they are just starting, and explain to them the importance of resorces, ambushing, aim, and countless other things.
Sure there will be "idiot n00bs" as someone put it, but these people are around in everygame, just there to kill mindlessly and rambo. The thing is that If the community starts emphisizing the importance of teamwork, and the basics, then they will find it fun to be a part of a large working machine, than a mindless rambo. The fun lies in being a part of a machine and doing your bit to make the rest of the parts work properly. That is the basic thing that we must show these new players.

Forlorn, I played CS for years before I discovered NS, and I still compeate easily with the top half of the players on the majority of CS servers, and I still aim crappy as a good NS marine goes... The best CS players rarely develop the ability to keep thier target stuck under the crosshairs for a long period of time, they have finely tuned headshot twitch, but when it comes to trailing a bead on a celerity skulk, they have a whole other sense of motion to develop. CS players don't 'aim' better than NS players, they <i>twitch</i> better then NS players
aim means a lot in NS, if you can hit a flying fade 4 times with a shotgun becuase you have good aim, and it dies, your **** is saved. if you cant hit the wall four times, your **** is dead. same goes for any other alien, cept maybe an onos, where if you cant hit that you shouldnt be playing video games
should this happen and they still go with the attitude they had when i stopped playing cs. you will all hear a message saying emergancy and a bunch of hysterical girlish screams comeing from me.

This is quite an interesting topic though i think we all agree that many people who go " Lets give this game a try, lets see what its like" won't actually stick with the game. Like i have stated in my previous post, ns is one of those games you have to stick with to learn. Many players from cs won't read the manual saying " I can understand this whole game in about 1 whole day of playing; eg.cs".

He ment 10 % will try it, and 2 % overall would play. So 20% of the 10% :-p
Y'know, I've read it's just a reflex sight, but that actually seems like a sensible descripting for the thing, too. There could be some fluid in there with nanites in it that pushes the weapon back to where it's pointing.
Edit: I failed my typing roll. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->

Oh, yes they will. If there's one thing I've learned about this game, it's that aim means very little. There are situations where it can come into play, but they only arise when the player starts with a base of common sense, teamwork, experience, or very good luck.
Jmms: Descripting? I fixed two errors and still missed that one? Gah. I should post less when I've just woke up.

No, I was making fun of the fact that you used nanites in a post <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

So tell me, if aim means little, then why do good clanners have good aim?

I believe what he is trying to say is that aim is only short-term, but teamwork lasts for the duration of the map.

oh no... combat... cs frag ****... time to start bookmarking a lot of ns/classic only servers!!
Uhm, imo, aim is far more important on marines side than teamwork. Teamwork is far more important on aliens team though...
