<div class="IPBDescription">Working out?@?@ WHA/!</div> Yes, I know it may be a foriegn concept for most of you people but I wanna know if there is anyone else here that works out on a regular basis. If so what types of food do you eat to give you energy and what types of exercise do you do.
I started approximately 2 months ago and I am looking for new ways to shape my upper body. Any general advice would be appreciated.
Whats a healthy workout? What shouldn't you do? What should you do? Really any questions that relate to working out I would like answered.
P.S. No I am not trying to impress someone or anyone, this is strictly for self-accomplishment.

Not even for degamer!?
seriously google is your friend. Just do lots of light reps, good for muscle building...i think
*tries the swiftspear diet*
2 weeks later
*has gained 400 pounds and has had over 30 heart attacks in the past 2 hours*
I really want to get rid of my pot belly and build some muscle, thats really my ultimate goal.
Also what cereal do you eat? I found Total Protein to be the only cereal with a lot of protein in it(except its low carb <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> ).
on top of that, do lots of pushups and crunches. do 100 crunches twice (or three times) a day. do your max set of pushups three or more times a day. if you have a pullup bar, even better, do pyramid pullups.
what to eat.. eat healthy stuff. you don't have to count your calories all that much if you're running 4 miles every other day. peanut butter sandwiches, bananas, meat, bread, pasta, salad.. whatever. just try to limit the stuff that is 100% bad.
For chest workouts, use the benchpress, and also use barbells or dumbells to isolate certain areas of the pecs. If you want to work out the outer pecs stretch out the very top corner of your chest as your going down and push inwards to the middle of your body at the same time as your going up. To work out the inner pecs use the angled bench. There are many ways to work out your muscles, and there might be people who know a lot of this stuff at your local gym. I'm a hardgainer, so my advice wouldn't work for you.
uhh if u don't work out for 2 weeks straight, everything you did will be wasted.
As for upper body strength - your weightlifting will do you good. Don't weightlift 2 days in a row; give your body at least one day inbetween to rest. Also, alternate between 'strength' days - few repetitions with heavy weights - and 'endurance' days - lots of reps with light weights. Try this for a weightlifting schedule:
Week 1
Sun: Rest
Mon: Strength
Tue: Rest
Wed: Endurace
Thur: Rest
Fri: Strength
Sat: Rest
Week 2
Sun: Endurance
Mon: Rest
Tue: Strength
Wed: Rest
Thur: Endurance
Fri: Rest
Sat: Strength
^^ Alternate between the two for a well-balanced workout. Determine for yourself what ammount of reps and what weights to use.
The 2 miles a will be great for your legs and cardio, but if you think you can handle it (or think so at some later date) try increasing the distance in 1/2 mile increments. If you are using a treadmill, try giving yourself an incline.
One last tip I have for you is to eat a lot of fruits and veggtables; the fresh and raw ones are best. They will provide essential nutrients and just improve your health overall.
Good luck!

Sounds good, I had to take a break today because the portion right in between my arms(between the hand and the shoulder) was really sore.
Thanks for all the advice, I'm gonna try 4 miles tomorrow but I think I am gonna kill myself in the process.
Have fun <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I wouldn't go all the way to 4 miles - try three. Trust me - I used to run cross country (till I hurt my hip & knee in a fall) and the difference of 1 mile is HUGE.
Also drink _LOTS_ of water when running. H<span style='font-size:8pt;line-height:100%'>2</span>O is <i>essential</i>.

Yeah I usually drink about 12 oz of water before I start. Mainly because I sweat a lot. The gym also has a lot of water fountains so I make a lot of runs for those also.
are you looking to improve your physical ability, or your size?
Also, when doing the chest exercises, you must work your outer and inner chest so it won't look funny. For inner chest, do a bench press but with a closer grip. Close grip = inner chest where as wide grip = outer chest.
To get rid of your pot belly, I would suggest running and eating right. I common misconception is that if you do 500+ situps a day, then your fat will go away. This is a lie, you naturally have a 6-pack from the day you're born but it's the fat that covers it up. So to get rid of it, I would suggest eating right and running. Sweat away that fat.
A good idea is to drink a glass of milk before working out so that your amino acids will get a little jolt and you'll build muscle better. Another thing would be to drink a protein shake afterward so that your muscles do not 'eat themselves' away.
And also a common misconception, that degamer kindly said, is that if you don't work out it will go away. That's completely falst. You might lose some muscle definition and such but you should be as strong as you were before.
If you want some good exercises for upper body just tell me, that's pretty much what I've been doing for the past 3 years.
Just remember to have a day of rest and to work everything evenly. Nothing funnier to see than a guy with huge biceps and the smallest shoulders, back muscles, etc.
I hope this will help you. Ultimately i suggest joining a sports team. I joined crew and am now in the best shape of my life.
and if we're going to suggest "joining" stuff.. join the Marine Corps. i'm in the best shape of my life, too <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Who the hell doesn't like pot bellies and man boobs?!?!
LoL
That aside, I hear its good for tone. I wouldn't know, here in the US I've mostly been doing nothing at all the last year or so.
Edit: How should I go about making a protein shake? What ingredients do I need? Where do I procure such ingredients? etc.
Thanks.
But you sound serious about this so I'm sure you already stopped drinking those.
I personally run 4-5 miles every weekday and do 50-100 pushups/situps every night (mostly <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> ) and I seem to be in good shape.

Well, the easiest thing to do would be to head over to your local GNC or health store and purchase a protien supplement. Alot of people mix the powder with water, but the best method is to use milk and mix that with a chocalate flavored protien. That way you'll be getting not only the protien from the powder, but from the milk as well.
You might also want to look into purchasing a Glutamine supplement to help keep your muscles from eating themselves after a workout.
As far as your routine goes, pick one part of your body to work out daily. Personally i do, biceps, chest, triceps, shoulders, back, and then legs. Thats a total 6 day routine with one day off. Just remember, if your looking to put on alot of muscle the only way to really do it is with iron. That means bench press, military press, and dumbells. Keep the cable workouts to a minimum unless working out the smaller muscle areas.
Oh, and lastly, if your goal is putting on muscle, dont go doing too much cardio... Its very hard to bulk up your muscle and burn fat at the same time.
I've been working out for a while now so if you have any questions, feel free to ask <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
