maybe I shouldn't have showed him the link.

But according to the Verizon lady (my dad had to call to cancel some stuff since we all have cell phones with same features) its going to go into testing and I should have an optic line (Philly area) by the end of the year.

Should I really be surprised? No wonder my cable provider is starting to switch everyonte to 10mbps/1.5mbps up :\

...very good obviously, however there will be obvious limits because well, ISP's get are cranky about acting as a server.

Great way to torture me guys.

Especially since Hong Kong is teh uber lacking in the internet department. Sure we got broadband, but we most prolly will get Optic Fibre connections in like 2 years.

BTW, aren't optical fibres really fast at transmitting data, due to the fact that light travels really fast?

It's amusing how it runs at 30 mbps though....

Are there more details around of the capabilities of fibre optic cable?
  • ThaldarinThaldarin Alonzi! Join Date: 2003-07-15 Member: 18173Members, Constellation
Wouldn't fibre optics allow broadband at a much cheaper price (its cheap as it is yes, but could it get lower??) because you could get alot more people on the same pipeline because the bandwidth and speed would increase due to the properties of light?

heck to the bandwidth can you imagine the ping? o.O
Could this finally be the era of decent online MMO action games? =o

LoL while your all streaming 1024x768 full screen movies with your 1000000000000mb/sec internet connections. Spare a thought for us in the Uk who have to put up with Brittish Telecoms rather feeble attempt at a phone network.

Its because the cable companies in the UK have no competition with other cable compaines (NTL and Telewest cannot operate in the same area) then DSL in the UK is pretty much at a stand still.

Even BT , the UK's larges provider of DSL, has a 1gig limit per month on 512k its internet package!!!!.

I've got 3.0mbps/256 up soon to be 6.0mbps/512 up. Its never buggered up since the day they replaced my craptastic used modem I first had. Its been on, for over 2 months straight. Im really pleased but Im turning around and giving it the finger as soon as verizon offers the 30mbps fiber in my area. (crappy wisconsin)

    HEY Wisconsin doesn't suck....

    It blows...bad.

Hm so only Verizon is offering it? (unsubscribes from Road Runner and signs up to Verizon)
  • UltimaGeckoUltimaGecko hates endnotes Join Date: 2003-05-14 Member: 16320Members
Well, unfortunately for this Wisconsin area you can either get Roadrunner (...owned by Time Warner) or AOL Broadband ($5 more but it's owned by...Time Warner - no, I haven't figured that one out yet, either).

At least it's better than at the university, where we get the awesome ResNet (school broadband) which is barely above 56k quality. I mean it's that bad. pings of 300+, download speeds of around 10kb/s...bah. Hopefully they've gone from their T1 to a T3...bunch of backwoods-school slacking networkers.

At least a lot of good single player games are coming out the first month during school - including Fable and possibly Rome Total War (demo on Monday on Fileplanet! )...So I might not need my connection too much.

Since (...I keep spelling it sine and I haven't been in a math class for 2 years!) Time Warner's got the big monopoly over here, I don't see optical coming for a while. I don't see it coming anywhere in Wisconsin except Madison and Milwaukee for a long, long while .

You gotta remember though: Your broadband is higher quality. Here, broadband means a download speed from across town at a very max of 500kbps(at least with my ISP), anything out of state being about 150kbps. For you(from everything I've read at least), cross town would get you a few mbps, and cross country is like 1.5mbps. I'd kill for that

Sort of yes and no. No, because regular wire lets electricity travel at 300 million meters per second (speed of light) and an optical fibre "only" runs at 200 million meters per second. A lot more data can be transmitted at the same time though through an optical fibre making it much better. The speed difference isn't noticeable.

    /end geeky mode.

EDIT: Bad wording for half of it I know, but you'll get the idea

The connections are anywhere from 6mpbs to 30mpbs and they are up AND down. So P2P software is going to get outta control and its gonna be awesome having 2 ping on every server.
