Seems Like Ns Is Owned By Valve

getting old
I know I'm not the only one thinking this, and probably not the first to post about it either. I have always held the NS team in the highest mind especially compared to valve and other Mod teams. As of late however, it sems the NS team is taking exaple from Gabe. The main page get's updated every 3 weeks (if we're lucky...and that's only if), almost no word of the newest release other than the abe special "when it's done" and of course...delays. Just needed to get this out of my system and voice my disapointment, however i know the NS team doesn't kid aorund when it comes to NS and this disapointment will be subsided when they get to releasing their next workings of Natural Selection.

My main concern about this is people getting bored of NS betwen patches (as i know I do). After a while all I do is surf the forum waiting for news about the next release and too see what other goodies are coming our way. Would be nice to see bug patches every couple of weeks, but I know the troubles with doing this. And of course the major pisser of a delay at the absolute last second. When this happens i pretty much say **** you and just wait for some friends to tell me it's been updated. Just my 2 cents. STILL LOVE YOU GUYS THO! :-D

Valve have given a considerable sum of money to UWE last time I heard.

The reson for low updates is becuase the bugs in b5 were very large. and the PSHB took a while to relize that it was a fault with the engine,

    UWE is Owned by Flayra

It is not on the Stock Market.

Valve might be an investor in UW (as Flayra was looking for investor previously), but they own exactly Zero Percent of UWE.

Beta 5 isn't out because it's not done yet(same goes for Half-Life 2 for that matter). It seems that they've increased the scope of the patch somewhat since they said it was bug fixes only:

<Flayra|nsinvitational> There are some big balance changes too but we're going to PT them first before I announce.

And of course there are still a lot of bugs that are actively being fixed. It seems the devs want Beta 5 to be especially complete because My Games is supposedly the next step. Complaining about it doesn't accomplish anything.

While I'm not allowed to go into detail I still can assure you that beta5 is being worked on intensivly. There are still some bugfixes that have to be verified and a LOT of bugfixed that already have been verified. There are some small but very nice changes to some maps and a couple of changes to NS and Combat that I bet most of you will like.

Both the Devs and PTs are currently working very hard (new builds every couple of days, testing twice every other day, sometimes even more) so everybody who says NS developing is dead or has stopped is definitly wrong. As it has been said before that Bug Database is a very good source for you to get the latest information about quite a lot of the changes that are currently being worked on, the two main problems with that however are
1.) people are too lazy to actually have a look at the Bug DB... wich is really sad.
2.) All that some people want is shiny new things; they don't care for bugfixes and don't really understand how much influence a fixed bug can have on the whole gameplay and balance.

So please stop creating a new "omg NS is dead" thread every other day. With our new PR guy (Zunni) you will get new infos on the upcomming patch and other related things more often now. Also, although we are not allowed to give you classified information like the combat change that is currently being tested, most of the PTs will gladly try to answer your questions about how the testing is going along in general.

    Just my 2 ( ?-)cents

The activity of playtesting has been put into question several times recently, so naturally people will have doubts of what exactly "working very hard" means. For example, it could mean snoozing in your office cubicle or it could mean actual productive work. Either way, it takes too long to release any type of patch and there really isn't an excuse for it. Bad organization, the root of all possible excuses, is a bad excuse.

    Oops, double post for sarisel.

I'm excited for b5 still, after waiting for 4 months and 21(?) days. And the fact that school is rapidly approaching (only 8 more days of summer, get cracking NS team) makes me want to play more, and quickly. I'm really looking forward to what the NS team has in store for us.

I don't understand why every patch has to involve big changes. Small baby steps would seem like the easier route towards getting the game balanced and fun.

Becouse little bugfixes change tha gameplay dramatically, so even if they change few little things some parts need to be redone. It is not the way to go.

I'm glad you think it's a magical process that accomplishes itself, Saraph. Making a bug entry indeed only normally takes me a few minutes, but the data I enter does not come out of a hole in my body. It's the result of testing based on the community's (or our own) noticing a problem.

Sometimes the testing part is quick, sometimes the reporting user is full of crap and it takes a while to figure out what he's talking about. A bug report in mantis is not the end of the day, though.

After a bug is reported, someone has to fix it. Usually it means we decide what needs to be fixed sooner rather than later and tell the coders "get to work on this issue." and provide them with our idea of what's going on to give them some means of getting started. NS consists of many thousands of lines of code and our programmers are still learning how it all works.

After they attempt a fix, we have to have a new build compiled so we can test it. Again. And again. And again. Until it works. Naturally, this isn't a one-bug-at-a-time process, but it still takes time and effort of several people.

The NS team that exists today is almost entirely newly created and organized. Lots of people have been given new roles and responsibilities and many of us depend on each others' input to take steps. We're all in different timezones, have real lives, and are not being payed for the hours of work we do on this mod.

You all may not be getting fed a fat juicy steak of an update as often as you'd like, but woe betide he who thinks we are not working and getting things accomplished. If any one of you out there would like to pay me $12\hr to work on NS, i'll do it nonstop, and I'm sure there are other team members who agree.

Until such time, relax, go see a movie, feed the ducks in the park, and don't stress out over when NS 3.0 Beta 5 will be released, and don't concern yourself too much with how the NS team is spending its time. We're working on it.

Flay's wallet. You'll have to remeber that flay is not working right now as far as I know. He's currently working on getting unknown worlds off the ground, he new mysterious unannounced project, and NS all at the same time. As allways, constie payments go towards the development of NS and other Unknown world games. Basically, you are ensuring the development of NS and any other games flay will make by helping him buy stuff like FOOD.

Guys, I'd say 99.99% of it has gone to allowing Flay to live while he wrote NS. It's also helped towards the initial setup of UWE, I suspect.

Without the Constellation system, UWE and probably NS as it stands now would simply not exist. I'm pretty sure Charlie isn't living the high life off of it.

I'm glad to have dontated, as I've played NS far more than pretty much any commercial game I paid ?30 for, so ?15 (or thereabouts) for double or triple the total playtime is a much better investment.
