When To Onos

The Big Question
Many times I find myself in a situation when I can go Onos and but there are only 3 people on the marine team. In such a case don't go Onos, I find it to be unbalanced and not a very fun game. Im just curious as to when everyone else goes onos?

I usually start going onos when there are at least 6 marines and only if there are no other onoses. If there are less marines I don't go onos.

    not much point going onos before hive 2, even then theres no massive need to onos (considering how annoyingly easy it is to get stuck on the map or blocked by a skulk) unless you either need to counter HA (or possibly upgraded heavy weapons) or break the 3rd hive or marine base.

    3 conditions:
    * 2 hives
    * Access to defense upgrades
    * Access to movement upgrades

    If those are not true, Onos is a waste of res (at least for me).

    Thats exactly my point, in CO when to go onos, as in should u go onos at 3v3 6v6 of 9v9 etc. I think it should be at least 6v6

    Below 6v6 onos is viewed as "ogm lame" because it's hard to counter. If it's 1v1 your just being mean

    I've always thought it was kind of lame to onos early in such a small game, telling my teamates, to give them a chance at least. If they are still running around as light armor with lmgs, theres really no point to go onos. I mean, if you can go onos in like 5 minutes, what point do the marines have to keep playing the game with you? Going onos early in a small game guarantees the win you already have, I mean why rub it in? Everyone in the server is playing the game to have a good time, and you really don't need to go onos to do so. Ofcourse I get the gratuitious "It's only a game man, lighten up!" speech. Yes, it's only a game, but the marines could leave the server, and gimp the game for you too.

    As for when to go onos, going onos with one hive should be a last resort, in a somewhat decent game, of 6vs6 or more, you probably shouldn't go onos until hive 2, so you can actually escape the marines if they choose to hunt you down with extreme prejudice. You probably should go ahead and hang onto that res if there is no immediate need to go onos, such as heavies running around the map, or the hive is about to get attacked. By about to get attacked I don't mean the marines are already set up and about to scan the hive to siege, that is pretty much too late, the hive could be down by the time you finish gestating.

    In CO I Onos as soon as I can. Regardless of game size.

    I don't really care if its "lame" because the marines won't really care if I think their JP/Shotty/Resupply is "lame" because noone else on the team can help kill a JPer.

    Go Onos, spam stomp or devour them, kick over their CC, and if they whine then just laugh. It IS Combat after all.

    Edit - hahaha I haxored my typo.

    Actually, since this is a discussion of fair playstyles, not strategies, I don't see why I should move it.

    I usually onos when my team has 2 hives and plenty of rts/chambers and the enemy has heavies. Devour + stomp makes short work of heavies if you know when to flee. Umbra helps a lot too. As for combat..shrug. I've seen too many players onos without getting stomp and they usually get owned in the process. If you onos, celerity/adren help a lot. As well as cara/regen.

    On our server we have a plugin that doesn't let you onos unless there are at least 12 people in game. Much fewer then that and the game just becomes an unfun Marine eating contest.

    Aside from that Onos when you get the res as long as there are D chambers around.

    In small games under 4 people per team, I usually like to go lerk and fly around like a crackhead and poison/bite them like crazy.
    When a few more people maybe 5-7 per team, more fadeage, but leave myself prepared to go onos.
    If bored or I see HA, onos ahoy.
    I just dont like onos much because slow and not that manueverable.

    You will never win a marine combat game with a competent onos. I'll be happy to go in server and show how this is done.

QUOTE

The only time I see an onos useful now a days (post 2.01) is when the server has less than 10 v 10 and is on a normal map. On most custom maps the onos is now just a terrible waste of res unless you are:

A. Highly Skilled

B. Lucky

or C. Have Backup

    A game less than 5v5 going onos is just cruel, unless of course the marines are near-perfect shots, then it is acceptible to gesterate to the bullet magnet so the rest of your team can end the match.

    Right now the Onos is too weak to consiter the end-all be-all as it use to be and should be used more as a cleaning crew to pick up the pieces of a fade-raid.

    You never need those dcs as an onos, that is if you know how to use devor well enough. I prefer the SC and MC system over the DC/MC rush (with SC and MC: silence and cloaking=yummy marines)

    Oh well it's kind of a play preferance.

    (Note* I have seen some pretty good 1 hive onos players but in most cases it's already to late for the onos to save the match)

    pray tell, what is the difference between a "playstyle" and a "strategy"?
