I thought testosterone was the male counterpart of oestrogen (or estrogen, depending on which country you are in).

androgynous comes from two greek words "aner/andros" meaning 'man' and "gune/gunaikos" meaning woman. The u in greek often gets latinized to a y.

god damn greek looks crap when you transliterate it. so:

    ό άνδρος / ό άνερ

    ή γυνή / ή γυναικός

if anyone here speaks greek please forgive my: breathings, accents and the fact that it isn't modern greek.

EDIT: I forgot the point of my posting the etymology of the word =(

    testosterone is an androgen.

gen doesn't mean gyn, so an androgen comes from andros and gignomai/gevomen (the verb to become), as opposed to being related to gun/gyn and being man/woman as androgynous is.

yeah, figured that definition on dictionary.com didn't mean what I want but I couldn't think of the correct spelling so I went with it anyway.

What is a masculine or feminine perspective, anyway? In what ways are they different? I just assume that, hormones and certain physical stuff aside, they're more or less the same.

    Ok so as I understand it;

Androgen is a type of enzyme, a steroid in fact, that is circulated through the male body.

Testosterone is just a specific type of androgen.

Estrogen is the type of enzyme circulated in the female body.

However, both male and female counterparts have both enzymes, just one more than the other in a fixed ratio. This must remain homeostatic to prevent ill effects. So a guy would have both, just more Androgen than Estrogen. And for a girl the opposite would be true.

Also, Androgynous != Androgen. The first greek root is the same but the second is not. So they don't have that relation. Androgynous = Root for Man in greek & Root for Woman in greek. Androgen = Root for Man in greek and something else.

    EDIT: Typos.

gen = greek root for "birth" i believe. androgeny is the birth of male infants in medical terms, iirc.

actually androgen is like the building block hormone. They can be converted into testosterone or estrogen... and all this isn't taking into account progesterone which also changes things =3

Everyone has the lot of them in their body though. Alarmingly the levels of estrogen are supposedly far too high in men and women these days causing problems. If a guy's estrogen levels are high enough he can even suffer PMT-like symptoms XD
The high levels are caused by our diet... a lot of foods have things in them that promote estrogen. For example cows are often given growth hormones so they become nice and fat and make lots of milk but this also makes them produce a lot more estrogen in their milk which we then take in via dairy products. Supposedly soy-based products are insanely high in estrogen too =o
