Sure, greedy old Vivendi Universal gets my money instead of hard working Valve that has supported Half-Life this whole time, but I get a BOX!
I was going to get the boxed version due to steam down-time fears.
However i found out recently that retail copies (cd/dvd from a shop) still have to be authenticated through steam during the initial installation. After which i assume the offline mode will work without logging back on. But still you need internet connection to login to steam at least that first time to unlock the game.
Im presuming that they will continue to pre-load more chunks until the realease. But surely steam users will get it first when the first time zone reaches Nov 16th on the international date line?
Yeah, many have pointed out that due to Australia being 10 hours ahead, its possible HL2 will unlock the moment the stores open over there. This would make it in the evening/night of the 15th for Americans and probably about 11pm to midnight for the UK.

Yes, but but the concept of HL2 actually being released without any more hiccups is difficult to comprehend

If the release of Counterstrike: Source couldn't kill Steam, HL2 won't be able to either.
Fun fact: The release of CS:S did not kill Steam.
