Oh and I don't have CS:S and doubt I could run it Engy, otherwise I WOULD make the videos myself. This is why I asked ya, but if its too much a hassle don't worry about it.
If Red vs. Blue can get the kind of following it has using an unmodded copy of an Xbox game, imagine what they could do with Half-Life 2 (I was surprised they didn't switch to the PC version of Halo; they could've had alien characters and custom-made environments and such). I remember reading a while ago in some preview for HL2 that lip-synching of .wav files could be done automatically using a program included with the SDK.

You provide it a wav file of the person speaking, then type up what the person is saying. The program then matches the sounds and the text (text greatly improves accuracy in timing and phoneme animation selection) and it comes out with the data to lipsync with the sound.

I've thought for a long time that HL2 is going to revitalize the Machinima community. It's true machinima films have been around for a looooong time, on just about every engine, but it's always been somewhat of an 'underground' thing, never really been popular until RvB came about. That team is now hard at work on strangerhood, so i doubt they will be doing anything in HL2 anytime soon.
Personally I can't wait for HL2 to come out so i can start playing with it, and see what kind of films my buddy and I will be able to produce in it. I really hope they include some ingame machinima maker, like Matinee for UT2K4. Unreal '04 is the first game i've seen that really supports it... although ironically up until just recently we haven't seen squat for films made from it. There has been a huge flux of ones coming in recently, undoubtedly due to the possible $50,000 prize and Unreal3 engine license! Epic has really supported the machinima crowd, I just hope that Valve sees the possibility in the mod community for it, and really develops and/or releases some tools for movie makers. If not, i'm sure someone will, but who knows when, or how powerful they will be able to make them.
I was gonna post the link to the phase4 finalists for the UT2k4 machinima contest, for people that may be interested in it, but atari's forums are down for several days, so i don't have the exact link handy. It's worth checking out to see what can be done on an older engine like unreal. Personally I had to scrap my unreal-made movie due to Real Life circumstances, as well as I was rather disapointed with the tech involved in UT2k4 (so much of that game is smoke & mirrors I discovered, the tech on it is actually quite old) The tech behind source is undoubtedly far superior, I just hope they release some tools to make good use of it. Having the ESP version of XSI is certainly a good start, i'm very curious to see what, if anything, they are going to incorporate into the new version of hammer for machinima makers.

RvB got around this as each character is wearing a full helmet that obscures the face, it's literally just a case of pointing them in the right direction, there's very little acting going on, otherwise, but it's definately the writing that shines in that, for me at least, and the voice acting work is pretty good quality (Although their sound production needs an overhaul).
With Half-Life 2 pretty much doing the work for you, as far as lipsyncing goes, it makes higher quality machinima just that little bit easier, which is good, and Half-Life 2 may well (There's 0 information on this, however) be using the same mechanics for camera control and manipulation as Half-Life, so hopefully it's familiar territory for anyone that's previously had a play with Half-Life before (It's pretty good fun and there's a few Half-Life machinima tools out there).
I would be tempted to do a little NS machinima if i ever brush up my skills (Last machinima i made was.... hmm... Quake 2 i think, maybe Quake 1, and i never released it) to make a short NS-themed, demo-based, movie. Could be fun, but i've a dozen other things i should be working on. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Machinima has, and probably will be for a good time in the future, be pretty underground. Most people, gamers included, if you mention machinima they'll say "Huh?" It's not like there isn't quality work out there and it's not like it's all that bad, but there really hasn't been anything all that ground breaking. Take Militia, it's pretty nicely done, good little story and voice acting, but it contributes nothing to machinima as a genre, or a medium of storytelling. It's basically just adding dialogue to a game of CS.
Someone needs to get out there and make something to make machinima recognised. Sure, RvB is pretty popular, but again, it's not actually contributing anything new to the medium and essentially is taking it nowhere. Now don't get me wrong, i enjoy RvB, but i still regard them as "those funny little Halo movies" not "man, this is a sweet animation series."
Take Grave Of The Fireflies, that movie redefined anime to me. It's like taking anything i've learnt from anime from the likes of The Guyver or Trigun, whatever, and turning it on it's head. It's a deep, moving and amazing movie. Machinima needs something that will do that to it's audience.
