And how to use it effectively
Now many people who started NS when it first came out have been used to having big guns on tap and ready for use whenever you respawn, However! this doesn't happen now so I have decieded to make a short summery of your available firearms and how to use them EFFECTIVELY!
1.) The Knife
Sharp steel goodness, in one hand held utility! Now many people think the knife in NS is about as much use as lets say a tin opener, pointy stick or a similarly blunt kitchen impliment, This can stop, right now!
The knife is useful!
And heres why, it does damage, lots of it, nothing beats the knife as a building destroyer, a marine can make a mess of a alien resource tower in a few seconds, with no ammo lost meaning your commander doesn't have to drop any good idea isn't it! Of course a knife isn't going to help you against a Skulk, Lurk, or Fade, but you won't have to reload!
2.) The Pistol
A good backup weapon, fires powerful rounds quickly, not as useless as people think, just remember to fill it up when you visit the armoury
3.) The Welder
If you have this gun, you've sold your soul, keep it out and do what your meant to do fix stuff, whatever you are doing use it, fix buildings, marines, Heavy Armour you name it you can fix it not to mention you can alter the map with this baby!
4.) Mines
Place in good locations, sit back and watch stuff go bang!
5.) The Light Machine Gun
The most UNDERUSED gun ever ans IMO the best one, and its free!
First tactic, if you fire more than 5 rounds at a target, at once, you are a muppet, that is inaccurate and you'll end up reloading in no time, fire in bursts, the job gets done quicker. Against building this gun is good, against Skulks this gun is good, just give short bursts and reload when nothing is going on, nothing sucks more than running out of a clip, when a Skulk is charging you
6.) The Heavy Machine Gun
Pretty much the same as the above, use in bursts, and as this gun has a very long reload, reload when no enemys are near you.
7.) The Grenade Launcher
The most controversial weapon, alongside the bile bomb, NEVER use this gun against a Skulk or Lerk, they are too fast and will avoid them, use your pistol instead, This may not sound obvious, DON'T SPAM WITH GRENADES, it fires fast, yes, it reloads slow, yes and worst of all, it doesn't have a lot of ammo, place your shots rather than going Rambo and blasting everything is sight!
I'll edit this if I think of anything else!

I don't know HOW many games ive had to say this:
"LMG and PISTOL = Free. SO USE EM DAM IT!" It gets REALLY annoying when the same guy has asked you for a HMG and proceded to lose it 5 times in the last 3 minutes. Thats when i give up and look for the 'EJECT SELF THROUGH STATION ROOF' button on the command consol.
again: L M G and P I S T O L = F R E E ! People. SO USE EM! You do not need a HMG and ARMOR to kill that one skulk that won't leave our frontdoor.

Best use for the pistol is if you run out of ammo in your current LMG/HMG clip and there's still things that need killing around. Pistol-whip those SOB's, CS style. You may get an "omg" or "wtf", maybe even a "bbq" if the target is confused enough.
Welder, yea. Stick around the base, or follow someone with HA, and weld everything in sight. Remember that having a welder makes you the commander's best friend. Only switch to your primary weapon if the big dude gives you a HMG, and even then you should only use it if there's a massive alien offensive.
Is the only turret factory at the base damaged? Well, weld the fsck out of it! Is the Big Chair damaged? Weld it! Damaged sensor thingy? Weld! Damaged turrets? Weld! Vent with a little floaty icon? Weld! Damaged Onos rampaging through your base? WELD IT! With the welder, you are the insane engineer on your team, so show it! Weld EVERYTHING!
Don't use a GL against a Skulk or Lerk? Here's a hint: aim. That's right, aim, fire the GL _at the skulk or lerk, and when the grenade hits em, they go boom. If you can't hit things with a GL, stick to the HMG.
GL, welder, knife, that's what I normally cary once we get heavy armor. If you aren't good with the GL and knife, well, you spend a lot of time watching everyone else.
I usually just tell that person to stand in base, then dump a turret on top of them, then tell them to maintain base defense (since usually if they did die 3 times they went out on their own against lord knows how many skulks)

I wish I could carry a welder as my primary weapon and keep my pistol.
I also wish I could carry more than three extra clips; that would help me quite a bit.
Ah well, such is life.
WANT A GUN!? Do some **obscenity** work!
Secured that resource nozzle? Heres a gun.
Going off alone, and you want health? TOO BAD!
Theres no recoil or movement modifiers, its just a random cone, like HLs MP5.
You dont need to go full auto on a skulk, because either he dies in a few hits, or your missing, just a few bursts of 5-10 rounds and you can drop them easily.

you either have some sort of "sprites not showing problem" or youve hax0rd the muzzle flash sprites
after a second or two of firing i cant see the damn skulks :/

Never under rate the power of the welder.
lmfao ... I just about sprayed milk all over the monitor at your Welder-Evangelism rant there.
It's all true though.

It's true. The Welder offsets the Defense Chamber very freaking nicely, thank you. Nothing like it when all the Bugs forget that yes, Veronica, a Marine CAN Regenerate.
Little Engineery Buddy with his blowtorch can swing the balance of a came. Moron thinking that an HMG is the only thing in life can drive it straight into the groud.
My Counter-Strike training has done me well. If I run out of my main clip, I switch to the pistol without thinking and finish the job. I have killed many Kharaa this way. CS has also taught me the art of knife-fighting.
I still think we need the preverbal elephant gun, though. Something that makes you go as slow as a marine in webbing, something with a four second fire rate, and that can deal about 400 damage, yet have an extremly limited range.
Like this, for example:
http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/meninbl...ons/pulsar.html
CS tactics are fine and good - as long as your teamplay and communications transfer over too.
Didn't know the flashlight revealed cloaked aliens. Damn. Better be more careful of the glowing guys now.

not only is knife good against skulks, lerks, and fades...
as comm i've witnessed not 1, not 2, but 3 onos being taken down by knife in the space of 5 minutes... made for much laughing
That's what the guys with over 1000 posts say. I have little reason to doubt them.
Ha, Whale Fun.
No, no. Just like a high-powered shot gun, but with serious disadvantages, short effective range, high damage, low fire rate, high cost, slow movement, perhaps maximum turn velocity?
Anyway, this is not the ideas forum.

True dat.
A couple nice "WTH?" experiences tonight.
First, I LMGed a Fade straight in the **obscenity**.
Full clip of LMG from point-blank == death to anything < Onos
Greatly angered him. Enough that he just plain quit.
Same game. I was the Insane Engineer. While fixing up an armoury, what comes into the base? Onos.
Up I go on top of the armoury and whip out the LMG. Empty as much as possible into the thing, then out comes the trusty welder. Another Onos hot on the tail of the first.
Weld weld weld. "Onos killed self with welder." Weld weld weld some more on the other Onos while it's busy Goring a turret. "Onos killed self with welder." Drop dead from laughter. Then drop dead ingame from third Hungry Hungry Onos.

The knive vs. structure is also very powerfull.
I generally use the LMG/Pistol/Knife setup you start with. The LMG has excellent accuracy and good ol' CS tought me to use the pistol after a clip is empty. It really just comes down to knowing your weapons and using what works well for you.
I don't use the HMG much because I hate the slow speed. Shotgun is alright even though I've only used it two or three times max. Mines are great late in the game when Onos come a-knocking at your base's door. (Mines + Knife = Dead Onos)
You walk into them w/o fear, and sure they did a little damage but so does a marine w/ a lmg. Your not scared of either and for good reason.
