Do what I do, save map files when you make new areas, then you can revert to old saves, create new areas more easily and reincorporate old ideas more easily, quickly and accurately.
I wanted to have a short look at the map and it crashed my Half-Life when I entered the marine start from the navigation room. If I can somehow obtain debug information, which might help you, then PM me or send me an email.

But...
..in some way he has right. The size of HL maps (4096x4096) really can't allow me do the realistic spaceship, with bridge in front, engines in rear and with other sections in middle. Whan I was sketching ns_hulk year and 2 months ago (during chemistry lesson ) the layout was 3 times longer then wide.
So I'm looking forward to HL2, because maps will be 4x bigger in all dimensions. I'm really curious about the new compilers and compile times
Oh, one more thing. With textures from NS (and without pixel shaders and other stuff), nobody can make something ?ber-realistic looking.
You don't actually get it. I wasn't talking about the size of a map. I was talking about the shape of the map. Those corridors and stuff just doesn't make a logic building. I mean, who would design those corridors and stuff in real life so? If you look at the map, then you see a scrublle-plubble-wubble-whatever-... placed corridors there what are just placed there, nobody knows WHY they are there, they just are. I mean, why you guis make all those textures and stuff? For more realism? Then look at the freaking rooms god sake! Those rooms just doesnt make any sence. It seems that they have been placed there just for roomfill, without any reason, and this has not even done properly. I mean, what is in between two rooms? Empty space? And think of how does this structure would look outside, if you were outside. Just a giggeldy-diggeldy screwed bunch of corridors in many shapes and there are other not-used corridors between used-corridors?
This is not only this maps problem, most of ns_maps have this kind of problem.
If you look at the original HL maps, then there were all rooms realistic (I am not talking about the quality of 3D or somethin, but the atmosphere and such stuff). The motor is what it is, but still they created a piece of furniture and atmosphere there, not just empty rooms. That makes me **** off. I already wonder how you guis take the new HL2 engine and screw it with NS talking that "Oh, it is laready pushed to its limits", you just don't know how to use space properly and fill it with unneeded things..

Yeah, sure.
1. Balance. If it were all a big room, skulks would die faster than you can say ns_hulk, lerks would have a field day, JPs would be the only way to win, etc. Besides, gameplay > realism. Who cares if the map is realistic if it plays like ****?
2. Engine limitations. It's simply not possible at all to make a realistic map, really. The proportions of the HL engine are completely screwed. The map would use too many resources to make it look realistic.
3. Realism. Yes, where else will they have maintenance areas, pipes, cables, computers, generators, engines etc? In corridors? Hardly. There wouldn't be empty space between the corridors, because how would that work?
4. You're saying you're supposed to fill rooms with unneeded things? They are, as you said, unneeded and as such a waste of space and resources. I take it you don't know the first thing about mapping, because if you did you probably wouldn't be saying this. Oh, and the HLSP maps sucked, both visually and logically.
Also, what's your obsession with having everything being realistic? Why must every room have a reason, why must every corridor have a reason?

In short: lurk more.

Where did you actually see me talking about big rooms? Just make small rooms, and fill those with furniture, like a television for instance (what was used in HL), ofchourse futuristic. Instead of making small rooms, you create big amount of useless bigger rooms and fill those with ceilings, high platvorms etc.. All maps shouldn't be easy and shouldn't look the same. And if people aren't interested of the use of those rooms, then why the hell are those stories for in a fanatasy board? Why the hell I can read NS plot on NS official website? NS has lost its reason, it is meaningless. I don't actually wonder if german cheaters show up here like they did in CS what at last totally screwed. Just banging. If you want just BANG, then go play some other freaking game!
And if talking about plot, then there was said that there are those nano pieces all over the place what actually make the map visible in cc. I mean, they got holograms, they got everything, but still everything looks like some retarded old factory in 60. Chicago or something.. They got NANO, but still they have to weld, still they must do everything by hand. Still we see those old buttons what are not even used anymore in 2004 god sake. And if you mean that the space between two rooms (what you cannot see from cc, even there are nanobots everywhere. LOOK a plot hole, remember that thread of "Burn in hell Paul Anderson with plot holes in your story"?) is fillled with computers and pipes, then remember what is the time of NS. Today, we got lightcables, computers are turning smaller and smaller, but there, oh no, still got computers what fill whole rooms and despite teleports, they still have some kind of transport vehicles and pipes. Pipes take so much space between maps? WOW, why I actually see lots of pipes in a map when I am walking? Shouldnt they be behind the walls then? Right now, it seems that Paul Anderson himself has developed the NS. So stop developing or there will not be any NS in the future! Remember Alien series what turned worse over the years?
Ok, I think I need to switch game soon.. I think I must try AvP instead of NS...
But if we talk about THIS map here, the yes, I haven't played the map and I aprecciate your work. This is only a criticism made by looking the pictures and based on information you gave us. But I must say that furniture actually can replace high ceilings and platvorms and stuff.

labuum, honestly. From someone admitting not knowing about mapmaking, you sure are very crtitical about the entire mapmaking, as if you yourself could have done it better =/
There are limitations to consider. Most maps pushes basically all limits and alot of detailing etc must be removed due to gameplay. Sure, we could make a single room, pack it with detail to make you happy, but it would lag beyond playable and would probably crash.
In adition, sure, we have a far more advanced technology than steamengines, but we still have buildings, companies etc that uses them. Just because the technology is there, does not mean everyone has the access to it.
And be serious, you want it realistic, but accept the fact that there are aliens running about? That can speak english? Mm, maybe another game would suit you. But stay away from AvP if you don't like pipes and welders lol.

Who in their right mind would decorate an entire ship with furniture? Oo
Keep in mind, a map does not necessary represent an ENTIRE ship, rather smaller sections of it.
you see, us here that enjoys games have this thing called imagination. you should try and use some of that m8
About "earth-like planets". Yes, there's about 10-20 of those discovered. But none of us will ever find out if it contains any lifeform larger than a shrimp. Or with the intellect more than of an germ. So using that as an arguement.. I honestly cannot see the use :S
You speak of using imagination. Here's a treat for you:
"Contact has been lost with ship X" Now, they send some marines there and guess what, the alien lifeform mimiced the movie aliens and completely cleansed the construction of what you refer to as furniture, the rest was stacked as a blockade.
If you play on this map, what is there to say you get to play in the part where the furniture is stored?
Just, think about what you type, before you type it and try to have a little more understanding for this here beautiful map. It's a piece of art, just like the others and as such, reflects the mind of the artist, not you.
Well, ok then. I am not talking about this map now, but it is for all mappers. I mean, when there is a bar or cafeteria, then it should look comfortable and relaxing, not like a factory. At least I haven't seen any rough one.. Usually the walls are covered with wood or plastic and painted and carpet or nice stone plates are on the ground.. Maps should look as used, but now, they look like maps what are brand new and empty like an apartment what has just been sold and no furniture is in yet. Half of the ventilations doesn't make sence, they are covered with some kind of dirt, but where that dirt came from if everything else is clean? Or look at the lightning, there are no lights in tunnel, but still it is bright and you can see everything... That last one is mystery to me, I can stand other things but that last one is a mystery. Just make the light as a plain texture with no actual 3D in it and then add some light marks into the atmosphere.. All maps just look the same, only room shapes are different a bit.

WTH is that?
How does that map reminds a spaceship?
CRAP.
Most of NS maps doesn't come to any sence at all. A spaceship what is not spaceship-shaped, out of proportion etc. Rooms doesn't make sence etc..
Start it all over IMHO. The idea was good and I really like that window where the little spacesip thingy is seen.
Make one capsel what throws you out to space LOL, that would be cool. (space kills)

But...
..in some way he has right.

Wow, look everyone. He *really* doesn't know what he's talking about.
So basically, your suggestion is to make a huge hollow box? "NO MORE EMPTY SPACE OLO".
Yeah, sure.

Hmm you haven't played the map right ? I don't think the map consist only from "scrublle-plubble-wubble-whatever-... placed corridors". If you try the map, U will find there reactor room, engine room, crew sector and other locations which in startrek like spaceships are (or will be ).
U were talking about furniture and other stuff used for living. They were there in previous version, but I HAD to remove them, because they were causing only problems. I want them in map very much, but I have no more free space, I'm on 99.9% of Half Life limits (and I still have ideas to incluide )

After I go thrtough the first door as a marine and approcah this switch, the game locks up.
This is while running a listen server, with a Radeon 9800 Pro, Athlon 2200+ and Windows 2000.
[edit] Also crashes as aliens, although in one of the larger rooms.

type sv_cheats 1 in console and wait until the game starts, then the map run fine. I don't know what is caising it
There are limitations to consider.

Aliens running about? What the hell you mean with that? You doupt that there are other lifeforms expect us? Oh no. Earth-like planet has been already discovered. Water on mars has been discovered. And those bacterias has been discovered...
But if you speak about that gestating thing and that, then this is a bit off yes...
But that is OT.
But if you cannot afford a furniture in your map and things like that, then change the map story, turn it into something else what doesnt need so much things.
I am not talking about the tecnical side, I am talking about creative side, use your imagination.

Negative - this is happening with sv_cheats on and without. I do suspect that it is relatedto running a listen server though.

@CMaster: Try to leave marinspawn after the game start countdown. It helped to me
I mean, when there is a bar or cafeteria, then it should look comfortable and relaxing, not like a factory.
