Im in the more information camp. The single player interests me greatly, because theres so much you could do with it with more open (read: urban and jungle) maps. I mean think about it, visiting and fighting on the Kharaa homeworld, Id never thought about it before now. Or the other way around. Aliens push their way onto Earth like in the Starship Troopers CGI series on pay-TV. Add physics and HL2 style graphics and you're looking at something I'd easily shell out 90 bucks australian for. But the multi-player would also have to shine in the eyes of the clanner or its up the creek without a paddle.
But we need info. We need timelines. Proposed features. Hell even a sketch on a pizza box. I've paid my Constie donation because I believe its worth it. Ive been playing NS since the night it was first released and I can see a very promising sequel in its future.
Also, I used to be one of those that liked the box, manuals and CDs. But I got over it. Its over-rated, and just adds to the clutter of your room Digital delivery all the way.
i don't mind Internet to drive stuff, but a disk is more conveniant, because in the event of a re-format, you can easily reinstall it, but for example you buy from reflexive arcade, you have to rebuy after the format. Also what engine would it use, would it be an "add-on" so to speak, and would there be desant bot support?
I voted straight yes, I have been meaning to join Constelation for quite some time, but have never gotten around to it. I have played 2 games Flayra has worked one (I really liked the EE editor BTW) and I think that a third would be excellent.
hmm.. no boxes would mean less dependancy on publishers, but for some it would take ages to download and the whole thing just screams STEAM to me. no thanks. an internet connection required for cutting edge solo play? no, not ever.
and as most said, we have too little information and its a risky "investment". maybe, but unlikely for now
I think this kind of cooperation between developers and potential customers (fans) can work indeed! Just take a look at the LiveForSpeed (www.liveforspeed.com) project. They employed a little bit different approach, where they release new game content in incremental fashion, IIRC they require customers to pay a really bargain 10$ for each new major version (they plan 3 versions, where every version adds a different set of new features). This business model has several advantages over what the NS team suggests: 1, People always pay for what is in essence a playable game. 2, The risky 2-3 (or indefinite) years long period, when except screenshots, people will get no chance to experience the feel of the game is dropped,. 3, People can actually get involved in the development process, each new minor version is tried by the public, and thus new versions are shaped in the way the majority likes them. 4, The developers receive at least some funding through the development process, and, in the event of success, are highly motivated to continue the development with great effort. 5, This model is what Rational Unified Process and Critical Chain management systems are about. By the division of a long term project into effectively usable milestones that can be thoroughly tested and tried by the customer, the dev team does not loose focus on current and high priority problems in the sea if long term prospects and goals. In the beginning it may seem like this extends development time, however in the long run it actually shortens it by removing (or shortening) the crunch mode that takes up the last phase of the project, where a potentially large number of individual requests have to be incorporated and forgotten (or unnoticed) bugs creep up.
I would without doubt pre-buy if it uses the Source engine and can be bought through Steam. Try contacting Valve and hear if they could help financing it. I heard they got lots of cash.
But, I would probably pre-buy it anyhow. If it seems good, and it's NS so yeah...
I voted yes but with further development. i'd kinda like some reassurance that i'll be getting the game within a year or so of pre-ordering. i dont wanna have to deal with that Valve crap again.
No, I wouldn't pre order it for several reasons being a:25 bucks + another 50 or 60 is outrageous for a game and b:I have no idea if this game will even come out(and if it even does it will be several years).
From Flayra: Where do you get the $50-60 from? The idea is that you pay $25 now, and then you pay nothing else and get a copy of the game if and when it's released.
Well, considering the stuff Flayra has manged to pull off with the Half-Life engine, I'd be willing to invest a small amount of money in the hope of seeing the sequel on a next gen engine
I would pre-purchase the game, if I could also be credited as a constillation member, and have access to earily builds of NS1. I would also like to see more info on the new NS2.
Maybe consties could pre-buy for a discount, and perhaps new people could pre-buy for a bit extra, and become consties.
It's a bit early to make any donation opportunities in my opinion, I would also want to see more info about the game, thus, I'll leave here some questions about both NS:S and NS2 to flayra and his team. I voted yes, but with a condition as stated abouve by me, before rushing up my money on it.
Also dividing up the team into 2, both working on 2 games isn't is a bit tiresome? Shouldn't flayra and his team be occupied in making NS:S in the first place and then move on to NS2? I've always heard that we do better things and the more quicker way when we are all kept occupied in doing 1 thing. Is this situations that I would like to be a programmer since my patience for games development is so and that I'm capable to be on foot the days I want without going to bed in front of computer coding whatever is in front of me. But forget what I said, I'll go directly to what's more important.
Here's some questions that I would like to someone from UWE to answer.
About NS:Source :
- Will it has a scary environment with tight corridors like flayra or his team said it would have? The NS trailer shows it very clearly. For those of you who are not aware of this NS trailer or hasn't yet seen it I'll resume it for ya. Three marines opened a door which gives direction to a dark corridor where alien sounds lurk from every corner or spot, the first marine moves towards a bit and as the sounds kept going up and up a skulk leaps at him.
- Will most of the animations/artwork be redone or will you just port it over to Source engine like valve did to HL1, implementing the physics engine and didn't modified or changed textures animations and so on?
- Will most of the maps be redone and some changed to make it more let's say scary and atmospheric?
NS2:
- What we'd expect from NS2? We all know that it will have cutting-edge engine/graphics but what more we'll expect from it?
I'll be constantly updating this if I remember more questions to add up about the future of NS.
I would definatly pre pay, even if it doesn't get off the ground (I highly doubt this problem would occur, though). I payed for constie, I'll pay for this.
so basically he is telling us he has no sponsors, and needs to rely on pocket change from gamers
if uwe wasnt so unreliable the thought might cross my mind
From Flayra: See my updated comments in my first post. This isn't a subsitute for future investors and a publisher, it's a pre-cursor. Getting as much money from alternative sources means MUCH more control and profit is retained, giving us much better long-term success rate. For instance, getting a publishing deal right now would likely mean we would have to forfeit the NS intellectual property. This means the publisher would own 'NS'. Once we lose that intellectual property, our company is diminished and the publisher could have another study work on 'our' games.
NS2 must and SHALL be released!!
I'm with the more info gang on this, but in general, yes.
NS is the only game ever that I played longer than one year total (albeit with interuptions) Its the game with the longest time on my harddrive ever.
I will buy NS2 for sure. It really has to suck big time to prevent me from purchasing it.
Edit: I forgot to mention, that it would also require box and disk for me to pre-purchase the game. Purely download is fine for the start, but a hard copy must be available.
I'd pay the $25 if we had more information - I don't want to contribute to something that I won't play.
If NS2 were very, very similar to NS v1.0x, then I'd pay $100. But as far as I'm concerned, after 2.0 was released it was all downhill. I still play it and love it, but it's just not the same as the old classic.

It all seems much to vague for me to be supporting this project financially. And seeing as Flayra goes back and forth about making up his mind about what he wants to do (i.e. do NS 1 retail, make NS2 with an existing engine, etc) the end result is that there's too much uncertainty. 25$ isn't a lot of money, but right now this seems about a good an idea as to throw them out the window. Sorry.
I would, but I would also like to recieve constellation access with it or atleast have the price lowered for con access when preordering ns2. I only have so much cash I could give towards ns, and if people who preordered ns2 now would have to only pay like $10 instead of 20 for con access, than I would happily pay my 35 for both.
I voted yes, however due to the amount of time that will be needed to get the game to market I think that something has to be added as an incentive besides a potential reduction in price for a game that may not happen. I'm thinking something along the lines of a seperate forum where dev logs are posted, or e-mail updates, etc. Keep it simple, and make sure it's something that reassures those that pre-ordered that development is continuing on an on-going basis. It should definately not include constellation status however. Giving people who pre-order NS2 constie is not a good idea. For one, you'll just get a bunch of consties who claim "I already donated $20 to get constie and now I have to spend $25 to pre-order when other people get both for $25." Personally I'm not in this camp, but there will be a substantial number of voices with this message. Second, I think the constie program should continue at the moment to be solely associated with NS1. That is, if you like NS1, donate to become constie. If you want to pre-order NS2, well, pre-order NS2.
To all those who are replying saying "Well I was intended to join constie anyway, so yeah, I'll pre-order.", please do both. $20 for NS1 and $25 for NS2... sounds like a bargain to me. We all know you'd drop that much on a single new console game, so quit pretending it's such a wallet-breaker. Plus if you donate to NS1 and get constie, plus pre-order NS2 you will be giving UWE a much better chance at developing NS2 on their terms.
Wow, it's starting to sound like a PBS pledge drive in here...
Alright I voted yes because guys we've had so many free versions of NS, don't you think we owe it to these guys our 25 bucks? They're still putting out beta 6, FOR FREE. Games been free since forever and i think its our time to step up and give our part back to these guys. come on, its just 25 dollars. Thats not gonna kill your wallet.
