<div class="IPBDescription">Check it out</div> Hi NS fans,
I started my own support for Natural Selection Source and Natural Selection 2. The first step was to add sections for both games on my website which feature information on these projects.

English :
<a href='http://www.naturalselection.pexgames.com/games/halflife2/mods/naturalselection/overview/index.html.en' target='_blank'>Natural Selection Source</a>
<a href='http://www.naturalselection.pexgames.com/games/naturalselection2/overview/index.html.en' target='_blank'>Natural Selection 2</a>

German :
<a href='http://www.naturalselection.pexgames.com/games/halflife2/mods/naturalselection/overview/index.html.de' target='_blank'>Natural Selection Source</a>
<a href='http://www.naturalselection.pexgames.com/games/naturalselection2/overview/index.html.de' target='_blank'>Natural Selection 2</a>

I will try to post as many news on NSS / NS2 as possible on my website and hold my content up-2-date. I'm now looking for further ideas - and also comments - for NS Pexgames to support the new titles. Any ideas ?

P.S: A "special" filebase is coming very soon.

Gah - don't do that. The D3 engine never impressed me with how it performed. A little comparison:

I can run Far Cry at 1024x768, 2x AA, 4x AF, most settings on high, a couple on medium with a good (50+) framerate.

I can run HL2 in 1024x768, 2x AA, 8x AF, every setting on max with a similarly good framerate.

    I can run UT2K4 on 1280x1024, 2x AA, 16x AF, medium-high detail settings at 60+ FPS.

I can run D3 on 800x600, no AA, no AF, meduim detail settings, and get 45-60 FPS.

Unreal 3 engine looks sexy... but in order for an NS port to work out the best I'm afraid it would have to be source (not that that's a bad thing, as it would probably be the easiest engine to port to) <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

source is already going to come out right? i dunno....but i would say the unreal engine has consistantly been the most easily modded, ive been working with UT2004 for less than a year and have done alot, and with some user-tweaks the current unreal engine can perform close to as well in graphics, and a little less physics wise, but the UnrealEngine 3 will fix all of that. All im worried about is that it wont be out till 2006...

Not to burst anyone's bubble here, but NS:Source, if it happens, would be likely considerably more hardware intensive than, say, HL2DM. We'd just be doing a whole lot more stuff with the engine.

Im sure its going to be fairly decided, the only real reason why i bought hl2 was for the mods that were due for it, and there will be a lot more on hl2 then ue3
  • CrAzEdCrAzEd Join Date: 2005-01-17 Member: 36193Members
I'd prefer it for source, cause its the best!
  • monopolowamonopolowa Join Date: 2004-05-23 Member: 28839Members
I wouldn't mind NS2 on the Cryengine (Far Cry) - it's awesome for outdoor environments (as we all know) and every bit as good as Doom 3 for indoor stuff (I've got a custom indoor level with the same kinds of shadowing and environment as Doom 3 does). I've also heard it's relatively easy to map/mod for (don't know for sure)

But guys, don't worry too much about what engine the NS team picks for the game, no matter what it'll be a few more years before NS2 is ready for retail, and how many of us will still be using the same computers then? I for one have complete confidence that the NS2 team will pick a good engine for their game.

To tell you the truth, it would be more economical (for me) to put NS on the HL2 engine. I like the idea that buying one game gives me the choice to play a million more...not to mention that all the HL mods HAVE- and HL2 mods WILL bring more replay value to the HL gaming system, NOT TO MENTION that I prefer online games more than single player games for all the obviouse reasons, and the fact that you cant beat free is factored in there somewhere too. Then again, Id be happy even if NS was on the AvP engine. That game was scary as hell. The only thing I just dont like about NS is that the marines look SO **** when they run its rediculous! and any one who uses the flying thing for the aliens is a try wuss to the fullest

I must say that when I first played NS, I thought it would make the game a whole lot more intence if the aliens where more like zombies. Like a cross between NS and HALO (the Flood chapter). that would be so cool! but enough babling...Wait no, one more thing WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO TEAM FORTRESS 2. Dammit, there I go again. One more thing, I have to promote Front Line Force mod for HL in that once you play it, you cant stop. Every one would enjoy commandos on steroids so give it a try and like it. Front Line force on Source would be even more smashing if people would realize how damn tight that game is oh by the beird of Zeus. Marines till I die bi-atch!

NS Marine quote with reguards to the Sarge in HALO- "IM TOO PRETTY TO DIE!"

OH DEAR GOD, NOT THE DOOM 3 ENGINE!

(Marine looks over to other marine.)
Joe the Marine: "Hey Bob, can you see a goddamned thing?"
Bob the Marine: "Joe is that you, where are you?"

(Skulk looks over to other skulk.)
    Skulk1: "God it's dark."
Skulk2: "My God I'm trapped in a pitch black room with a skulk that can speak English."

All you people who are dissing the doom3 engine are very ignorant its been proven over and over again that the Doom3 engine is superior to source <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

all those people that dont like the d3 engine ... did you play doom3?
(i did not play trough ... the game was too boring but the engine was great)

i dont think hl2 can display organic things as good as d3 ... but if it takes soooo much less time to port ... take the source engine (im waiting for ns:s about next month then <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

@omega death: even you dont like the idea: i think it would really contribute to gameplay if a skulk cound really hide ... and not be discovered by several gamma "hacks"
  • Cereal_KillRCereal_KillR Join Date: 2002-10-31 Member: 1837Members
Yeah, from what I could see of Doom3 (in between different black or blood splats) the organic matter was MUCH uglier and more plastic. The player models were less smoothed out and the world seemed much too shiny as if it was coated in teflon. I'm sure we could make nicer looking stuff, but face it, the only thing better in Doom3 than in Source is the lighting, and the lighting in HL² is already sufficiently good. I'd rather play on Source than on Doom3 because at least I'll have enough FPS and the people would look amazing.
  • Viper_two_nine_AViper_two_nine_A Join Date: 2004-09-29 Member: 31989Members
(i had this discussion with other ppl several times ago so dont mind if my answers are rather short ... other reason is that ive give up hope that the next ns version wont be on source (this engine has just been hyped way too much by the gaming mags))

even if you say that everything in d3 look "plastic" (what i dont agree with)

for what would you use those (really good, agreed) faces and their animations in ns??
(those things are good for games like vampire but certainly not for ns)
  • Cereal_KillRCereal_KillR Join Date: 2002-10-31 Member: 1837Members
Realistic aliens? Marines who can actually speak and act naturally?

And again, I had an average of 40 FPS in the first days of NS. I had constant 100 in other mods.
With my new PC, now I have an average of 80 in HL, with a nice quality (1024, whatever AA, whatever aniso, can't be arsed to check) . In Doom3 I remember barely getting 50 in 800x600 with medium detail and no AA/aniso.

There could be a thousand reasons why Doom3 didn't ran well on your PC. And seeing as iD is famous for it's superb engines, I'm eager to blame the user (you).

Now, I just HOPE people realise comparing FPS is NOT a valid method for evaluating different engines. Doom3 produces quite difference scenery than HL2 does, and faces with different issues than HL2 does, and thus requires different hardware than HL2 does. Is it really that hard to understand? I'm not judging any engine here, merely pointing out the ridicule in your arguments.

Then I beg you please don't use the Source physics system for pointless things. I'm still agrivated by the CS:S ragdoll effects, which cut my FPS in half, and don't contribute ANYTHING AT ALL to the gameplay. But then again... using an engine like HL for a mod like NS tought you to use processing power with wisdom.

Sorry for the double post, a multi-quote system would be much appreciated on this forum (hey, i'm lazy <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->)

Understand also that Flayra and team will port the "free" NS:Source to an engine that has a viable base audience. To me, Source is the perfect for such a thing. However, with NS2, I'm sure the engine that fits the needs of the design would be best. I'd vote for Source or Unreal3 for my money, although engine Farcry is built off of looks nice. I guess the biggest thing I <b>don't</b> want to see is an engine like Unreal2 that's ALREADY dated for a game that's slated to take at least 2 years of development.

I think this is why we really need to take the idea Flayra has posted regarding presales. I don't know if it will fund the project as much as needed, but when purchasing an engine license, that's a big expense. I'd hate to see compromise on a game as awesome as this due to lack of funds...

My computer is far from top notch, but it's supposed to be above average. I have a 2500+, 512 ram (all at an FSB of 400), and a 9800pro. I could up my memory, but the fact that most people have 512 ram makes you think you don't need 1 GB of ram to run a game, because most won't do that. If you, like me, had a drop of 50% in FPS from DoD to NS then you'd expect a slight drop in a new engine, even if it's not cut in half because they're not going to the engine's limits.

There are tons of reasons why Doom3 lags more, one of them being the drivers (at least at Doom3's release), one others being possibly that I'm a retard, and also because the Doom3 requirements are quite higher than Source. This goes for nearly ALL the benchmarks I have seen.
I want, like the vast majority, to be ABLE to play the game, and enjoy it. Sorry if I don't have the money to buy any Athlon 64, it was already painful enough for me to buy a freakin XP2500+. I'm sure the vast majority of players who don't have bottomless wallets feel the same way.

Again, I don't doubt that the team can do miracles on any engine like they did for NS 1, but for me I'd prefer having a very nice looking environment and models, with above average lighting, than a very nice looking lighting with above average models. Then again, it is too early to say without having a better idea of the game, but if there's no favor for one or the other, I'd lean towards Source.

Doom 3's bandwidth usage is incredibly high. This is not a good thing to have if you plan on making a large-scale multiplayer game.
