EDIT: I assume they used source to render these? The url is a 404 because the server is too busy.
That Combine Supersoldier sitting on the bed can't really be on the Source engine... can it?!
No way... no way... that looks like a guy in a costume sitting on a real friggin bed.
edit: Ok, checked the link, and it IS a bunch of HL2 characters superimposed on real photographs. Stupid me, replying before clicking the link.
The models themselves do look pretty amazing, though. Like pre-rendered. And if that's what the new HDR really looks like, my X800 Pro is going to cut my throat in my sleep.

This one is extremly cool aswell. Don't worry that you graphic card will blow while rendering this. It's just not possible for current machines to render games in this quality in real-time. According to the author rendering those pictures took between 5-10 minutes each. And don't get you hopes up regarding HDR. To create such a render much more techniques are used than only HDR. Higher polygoned models and raytracing lightning have also been used to get such a natural picture. HDR in Half-Life won't even look half as good. I've attached a screenshot of the upcoming HL2 Chapter Lost Coast, which will introduce HDR.
bed picture..wow. and whats the damn point of the orb in the pictures, unless the model is mirrored in it. would take time, but doable. and would be twice as impressive than "omg i can see the cameraman in the mirror, but not the model"

With the information available both in the picture and from the orb (reflections and whatnot), you can come damn close to matching the ambient light settings of the scene. For example, you can make sure that all the reflective bits brighten up from just the right angle to match everything else.
