<div class="IPBDescription">but afraid to destroy your computer?</div> I really...really hate to advertise, but seriously, if you fit in the category I listed in the topic description, you *NEED* to try Ubuntu linux. It took approximately 10 minutes to set up and install, and its....easy to use, unlike most other distros. Seriously.

EDIT: They're offering FREE discs for a limited time if you can't burn your own. Google Unbuntu. (Free disks+ free shipping)

Screw up lilo as it writes to your MBR like me, it literally destroyed my HD's geometry. I had to do a low level format (The type that causes the HD to revert to a time before it was used)

It seems it's cool to believe that Windows is the infernal spawn of pure evil.

But what about support for games etc?
  • CommunistWithAGunCommunistWithAGun Local Propaganda Guy Join Date: 2003-04-30 Member: 15953Members
You need cedega/wine for non-OGL games. The process is a bit tricky if your new (like me) but I've managed to install Guildwars. Right now Im trying to install new video drivers for my 9800 pro.

Who cares about games? As long as Windows is evil (micro-dollar-oft) Linux has to be the sensible thing to do.

(On Windows, you just... click... and it works.)

Woah woah, so I could actually install games, and have them work?

Do they run at comparable FPS?

I'm really interested in this. Their shipping me 20 CDs(free- wow.) 10 for x86 PCs, 5 PowerPC, and 5 AMD Athlon 64. This will be going out over my school very quickly, and will probably be tested on campus.

Is there a cost for updates?

    Shouldn't be.

Ubuntu is debian based, just use apt to keep your system up to date.

Oh, and if you havn't noticed that my gentoo penguin is wearinf a "red hat" that's because I'm using Fedora with portage (portage practically is gentoo) yea... Maybey I'll go back to strait gentoo, I don't like rpm's and I'm unsure why I put fedora on my comp, but yea...

Depending on what card you have, the FPS might not be comparable to Windows if you emulate via cedega.

ATI has horrible Linux drivers, as I know firsthand, although it seems they are trying to catch up with nVidia finally.

nVidia has awesome Linux driver. Most people report having a higher FPS on Linux with the nVidia drivers than on Windows.

I use the Ati drivers, they work very well.

I also messed up with Linux, and at least I can do stuff with Windows that doesn't need hours on useless support with people laughing at your newbiness and saying how their distro is the best thing ever.

And Windows still WORKS. It doesn't lock up every 5 hours, it doesn't stab me in the face, it never destroyed any data, and the last time I saw a blue screen would be months ago. I don't know what you people do to Windows to always mess it up.

I have an ubuntu disk, borrowed from a friend. I couldn't figure out how to install it onto one partition while leaving the other two intact. I really want to keep the Windows partition, at least until I am confident that I know what I am doing with linux. I ran it off the disk, and I liked how it worked, but Windows is still nice for some software (I personally prefer Word over OpenOffice, too many little differences).

That sir, is frickin gold. On a side, trying this out because whoever said before that Gentoo was easy to setup needs stabbed in the face, and Fedora doesn't like my system for some reason.
