Not only is all equipment on the marines lost (weapons on the floor beneath aliens don't help much), but any structures placed there are as well as lost also. If it was a resource point you were trying to take, then by the time you get back, there might be an alien outpost set up which further compounds your loss.
From a commanders perspective, time is the most crucial resource because you are essentially competing for HA/HMG + upgrades before they get Onos.
Sure, its annoying when you lose a fully equipped marine and have to spend 50+ resources to re-equip him, but in my experiance, I rarely lose HA/HMG marines because they always move in a squad of three at least. Marine deaths are much more common in the LA phase of the game when you are rushing for map control.
A commander would have to mess up bad to lose a squad of three HA/HMG Marines with welders.
However there is one thing to be noted. As you all know the Kharaa each have their own individual resource supply that comes from a pool and is divided amongst them with Gorges getting a bigger share (for obvious reasons). Aliens cannot recieve their share of the resources when they are dead, so if you're waiting to spawn back in for 15 seconds or so you can lose a small chunk of resources that you would've gotten had you been alive. However, since you are not there when the resources for that turn/tick/harvest (whatever) are distributed amongst your team- your teammates get your share. This is another reason why rushing is a REALLY good idea. If you kill the marines- you win. If the marines kill you- your Gorge gets your dead teammate's resources while they're waiting to spawn back in.
If it would cost resources to respawn, it would only make this worse.
