Are There Any Keyboarders Left?

And by keyboarders I mean people who use the keyboard to aim like in the old Doom days. I can't possibly imagine a killing a skulk or lerking with a keyboard but I just had to ask because a friend of mine plays dm and he says he still uses the keyboard. I suppose you could be a commander or a gorge or maybe even an onos. Any body out there still use those arrow keys?

I still used the mouse in that <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Reminded me of the doom aiming system.
NS is entirely impossible outside of possibly comming (just might be a little slower)
my new one uses LASERS!
but a typer player?
either its too slow to get a skulk.. or its too fast for conventional use.
to be honest, playing as a skulk with keyboard isnt unthinkable on pubs.

one of my freidns does though... he's pretty good cept when targeting flying lerks, blinking fades, or celerity skulks.
* lacking mouse support
* play better by gamepad (which I currently lack)
* Soul Reaver Series (mouse is crap in this)
OK lets say you have a nice normal blockscripts_0 server and you're just going to take your standard halflife/natural selection default button config and shake it like an etch-a-sketch till it's blank.
To aim I guess you're going to need to be able to tap a button to increase or decrease your sensitivity... on separate X and Y axis, since a uniform increase or decrease would disrupt precise aiming. You might be able to rig up something in your usercfg that could bump up or down the m_yaw and m_pitch settings, maybe on the <- and -> buttons for yaw and ^ and v arrows for the pitch? Along with key buttons to comfortable aiming-sensitivity ranges for normal operation so you aren't always focusing on pressing the buttons to alter the rate at which you turn and look up and down. Something like a low sensitivity long rang mode button, medium-high sensitivity normal operations, superhigh skulk, lerk, cqb marine mode with triggerable 180 and 90 degree turn scripts maybe for leet backwards-sideways marine reverse-bhop-strafe-glide-powerjump action? You're obviously going to need to use multiple cfgs, just as sensitivity cfgs, and no mousewheel obviously available for "LEGIT" bhopping so this kind of <b>requires</b> a 3jump script on spacebar or whatever to do it correctly. And by correctly I mean competitively, as though you had somehow LOST YOUR RIGHT ARM UP TO THE SHOULDER in some freak accident but were still trying to do everything in your power to give yourself the same abilities you had back when you PLAYED VOLLEYBALL in order to TRY AND KEEP PLAYING. A 3jump would be modest.
You're also going to have to get used to using your movement buttons to aim just as much as your turning buttons, I presume. Like ducking and jumping in time with bhoppers so you are both kind of going the exact same velocity maybe? Plus I'm not even sure if you can bhop with the keyboard even with a 3jump script. You PROBABLY can, pretty easily maybe I've never tried, but actually coming out of it into a bite or through precise map archetexture might be difficult.
What you'd really want to do is adjust your crosshairs so you could see the things better, maybe create some new ones. The default NS xhairs are cool but kind of crappy for actually aiming at stuff. I'd go go gadget MSPaint and get a HUGE bold "<b>O</b>" for a close range cqb-sensitivity xhair, maybe a "[_]" box denoting where the furthest sides of the biteguns are for stretching and trying to get those extra bites, a regular Gluon Gun "o" for standard operations so you'd know just when to trigger your LMG to hit the skulk the second that he goes through your crudely operated targetting system, and a nice wee little halflife shotgun circledot for pistol and long range precision sensitivity-setting mode.
Also you're going to have to bind like every button on your keyboard and probably have a ESDF home-base and a OKLsemicolon home-base for your left hand because you'll need two different clusters of buttons, just because the multiple roles NS would put you through might require that many programmable configs.
This is a ridiculously complex game and the more it requires precise human nervous input through mice and lightguns to aim, the more using a keyboard is going to look like the fate of kids with cerebral palsy and stuff. I mean you might as well be trying to regulate your lungs with your forebrain and a slacked jaw. At least trying to organize and make it rational would let keyboarders look less like mouthbreathers.
LOL celer lerk would be hard as hell, so would flying up & hitting the onos beneath you

aye lol celerity lerk would be quite entertaining.
and tbh i never even really thought about using the keyboard to aima nd the thought of it makes me shudder
I can remember having my fingers fly all over the keyboard to hit all the force powers/aiming/movie/strafing at the same time.
I can honestly say it was very hard. Not to mention all the looks I get from people while I was at a LAN and was able to confuse people by never touching the mouse and still aiming fairly decently.
Won't ever go back though, even with HL/NS not being as fast as JK.
I switched from keyboard to mouse when going from Wolfenstein3D to Duke Nukem 3D
*memories coming up....*
Except for driving games. Do you guys use keyboard for steering, or mouse? (forget that you have a joystick/steering wheel/etc).
Now that sounds like a stupidly entertaining idea. I'd show up for it for laughs. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I agree that would be a lot of fun and a lot of laughs, especially lerking lol! <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
and I still on Doom Connector..
But then again, he's at the top of UGL for 1.6
