Curious About This Word...

People used to use the word "Owned", and now I see "Pwnd" or "Pwned". I figure it means the same thing but whats up with the P? Just curious about the how this word came about <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'>

If you look at your keyboard, p is right next to o, so it probably started out as a typo. Seeing as it was even more noobish to mistype a noobish word, pwned is even more stupid than owned. But they mean the same thing. say owned if you want to demonstrate your dominance over another player, but use pwned if you want to make yourself look like an idiot at the same time.

Lol. I never would have guessed it was that simple. After hours of play today, I never saw Owned, only lots of Pwned. Apparantly l33t speak has suffered a genetic mutation and "evolved" <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'>

It is certainly not a typo! It may have started out as one, but now hte word pwned is jsut as accepted as owned. Don't ask me why.

Yeah if you're going to say you own you never say: "Wow, I really own you guys, i'm alot better" That just pisses people off, pretend you are just messing around and say: "w00t I pwnz j00 4ll! I r 1337!"

Whenever I try to type 1337, I always have to stop and think about how to misspell the words. Ironic, considering all the abreviations like "b4" and "ne1" and stuff were originally desigend to make typing go faster in online games. =/

No no no no no, pwned isnt owned spelt differently! pwned is a shorter way of saying phoned. So when someone says 'I pwned j00!' it means that they picked up the telephone and gave ya a bell. However one day a n00b saw this on a game and mistook it for 'owned' and then decided to be an idiot and spread it around.

I have been gaming since before 1337 came about, it was quite fun to watch it go from elite to leet to l33t to 1337, each time l33t evolves it becomes shorter and uses less letters and more numbers. Eventaully it is going to revert to decimal code.

I always thought of it as pawned. As in a pawn shop, that's what it translates into in my head. Never cared about the meaning and I don't use it in my speech\writing. But then I suffer the curse of uber skimming. One book i read had this corp called Amspace but the first time I read it I mistoke it for Armspace and for the whole book it became Armspace.

0wned (v) - To dominate, eg "Man, I just 0wned you!"
pwned (v) - A lower-class, vulgar spelling of "0wned" used by those attempting to be skilled, eg "OMG D00D I PWNED J00!!!!!!!!11"
q0wned (v) - A brutal domination, a much more severe form of "0wned", eg "Man, five Skulk kills in a row! I just q0wned you!"

Then there's always the substitutions; eg "0wnos" - and my personal favourite - "Al Cap0wned!"

Started out as Own, and people kept misspelling it as Pwn. I guess gamers needed something to define themselves as a bloc, and they chose intentional misspelling of words. This can also be noted by the liberal use of "Teh" instead of "The." (Although Teh-ing has mostly stopped recently.)

ok guys, i can understand how pwned came around, but how the hell did TURRENT get here, its impossible for that to be a typo considering that all the letters of 'turret' are on the top row and the 'N' key is on the bottom

LOL well cs being my main game and has been for years, this topic did amuse me.

Now, I may be incorrect but I used to play Subspace (which is still played and is now called Continuum). I believe the word TURRENT originated from there as you could turret onto someone else by using the F5 key. Turrent! I haven't heard that in awhile, and I've only seen it typed on Subspace and its descendant Infantry (which is currently owned by Sony and pay to play).

I think a P is more closely related to a D rather than an O. Thoughts? Theories? (On the P) <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'>

Pwn just makes me furious and want to put that user so much on ignore... Any numberic language makes me feel like that. Especially if they type "You have no life you waste time at your computer" in numberic languages ^-^ Who's ever going to even translate those words?
