I for one certainly expected something a little more in tune with the NS universe, rather than just everything ripped from AvP. I don't care how long it takes to make something afresh, or how long it takes to convert something, but if you 'modellers' really listen to what the community want, this thread shows that people actually want inspiration.
Rhino Aliens, Aliens, Predaliens, Pulse rifles, AvP marines! This isnt Alien Vs Predator. if you want to play that game, go and buy it. Otherwise, help the modelling community and model something thats consistent with the game.
Most people take idea's from the AvP universe bcuz it has a lot of cool idea's for guns and alien designs...after all, H.R. Giger did design the Xeno's
It's not easy to design your own weapons, heck, the LMG default looks like a Stormtrooper blast rifle and the HMG looks like a box with a gun barrel attached.
I say congrats to people who manage to convert successfully, because they at least are trying to make the game appeal to themselves more so instead of going and playing CS they go and play NS bcuz of the fact that they can play in a good online community but still have a cool gameplay style that they like.

Quick tangent: Actually, they both resemble the British made sterling. The LMG borrowed the 'clip in the side' look, and the stormtrooper rifle is a precise replica of the police version sterling augmented with a scope and custom barrel shroud.
You know, you have do-gooders like Blue2k who just registered to start this IP **obscenity** and all they spout is "originality" and other **obscenity**.
If you're so concerned about "doing the right thing" why don't you **obscenity** and moan at the NS team for using a StarCraft sound in their game? That sound is the "chuckle" one that Aliens can do, the file is located in the stardat.mpq file in your Starcraft directory. Oh but of course, none of you would do that since your friggin' hypocrites.
Now don't get me wrong, I could care-less if the sounds from Starcraft are in NS. I am just using this as an example and challenge to those who are "just looking out for other people's work".

I never liked the magazine in the side of weapons, nor do I care for bul-pop, but I did sit and think to myself while playing NS "That weapon looks familiar", First weapon to come to mind was actually the sten.
Does the HMG resemble anything in real life that I do not know of? It looks rather original to me, and I know of no weapons other than AA guns that fire with mulitple barrels. (QUAD .50 BABY)
Quick question: Why does everybody call a magazine a "clip"?

This has been covered before, but for clarification: Flayra purchased a popular and widely used sound library for use in the game. Odds are that Blizzard has the same volumes. As far as I am aware, all the sounds in NS are either original, or have been licensed appropriately.

Yeah, the sten was another weapon I used as a reference. I went with the side loaded magazine for several reasons-- mostly because I like the feel it gives a rifle, but also because I was trying to do something somewhat unique-- the bullpup design makes more sense for a close-quarters firearm, but it's been done to death lately-- especially in sci-fi. Hopefully as the game goes along, I'll have plenty of opportunities to expand and evolve some of the weapon designs-- I definitely think there's plenty of room for improvement.

I borrowed the dual belt loading setup from the cis 50 machine gun, though the rest of the body construction shares little with this particular gun. On a side note, the SAR 21 is one of the most beautiful guns I've ever seen.
I'm eager to do some more work on the HMG as well-- It's been criticized for being a bit 'boxy' overall, and I have to agree. Fortunately, now that I've seen the full set of animations, there are many, many polys that I can cut from the back to improve the visible portions.
The Sten is icky.

Well I am glad you did not go wit the cliché bull-pup design, you are correct in it being over-used in games, movies, and real life.
The side loading magazine is rather unique to the Sci-Fi universe since I do not know of any movie/game that has another side loading rifle, most are either bull-pup or under loaded.

But can you REALLY put a license on a sound? When you begin to use sounds from real weapons in the world it is very easy for people to point and say "I HEARD THIS IN CS SO YOU ARE A THIEF".
Heh reminds me of when Harley license the sound for their bikes, imagine if Browning tried to license the "thump' of Ma-Deuce or if Kalashikov tried to patted the sound of the AK47.

Ewww, depends on your definition of beautiful. I come from a time when a gorgeous weapon was a M1 Garand or M14 (which in my opinion still rank high in my list).
These new weapons just don't do it for me, too much plastic and too small of a caliber. Not to mention that as time goes on these weapons will become more "sophisticated" meaning **obscenity** like the OICW and other automated weapons will be too complicated for the average soldier to use. Now I garen-damn-tee you that the SAR-21 will be less durable than the Ak47 or M14, I mean hell it does not appear to have iron sights.
But hey I am not going to try and convince you to like the old time weapons, And I don't think you are ever going to get me to give up my old war dogs for these new plastic toys though
