NS
Ok, I know I am a noob here, but this game is odd. Don't get me wrong, I like it so far, it is different. But I am confused about something. If the Marines move slow when you are playing as them, how can they move so fast when you are playing an Alien? But I do like the level progression; that is really nice. But is it possible to maybe make a way to keep players from being killed while they are upgrading? Just a thought. I like this game, good work!!!!

The main game is ns_ maps. I would play a game or two of ns just to get the feel for it then skim over the (illustrated) manual here:
http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns/view?action=officialmanual
Thats because almost all of the offensive alien abilities are close combat abilities whilst the marine ones are long range. If the aliens moved as slow as the marines they would not be able to get even close to a marine to attack.
The level progression thing is only for the CO_ or combat mode which is to help new players get a feel of the alien classes and marine weapons. The MAIN game mode is the NS_ mode or otherwise known as classic which is a mixture of FPS(First Person Shooter) and RTS(Real-Time-Strategy)
CO/Combat did not exist during NS Verison 1.0x which is when I started playing, I personally reccomend you to ditch go and start playing NS_ maps on servers such as FR31NS(IP : server.fr31ns.com ), Lunixmonster (IP:69.93.5.186:27015),
EDIT: I misread your post, perhaps the marines appear to move fast because they are wiggle or wall walking which are quirks in the HL engine that allow you to move faster. PM me if you wish to know how to do this.
Eventually you will feel confortable enough that you won't need to go back to the old co games and still play quite confidently whereever you end up.
If you have a question about anything, tell people you're new and ask in game, the vast majority of people are more then willing to help a new player learn the ropes of NS gameplay.
One more thing to try is to DL some of the bots around and play commander with bots as grunts and enemies. Bots don't mind if they lose with you as thier com. Its a great way to learn the structure orders and what they each do. Keep in mind, comm's need to drop equipment for thier troops, so don't run around aimlessly trying to buy guns or earn money, the comm will drop stuff at some point, and if you're good enough, he might even aim for you.
Follow your WPs and obey your orders. Good luck marine, see you in the field. (rofl, roleplaying)

Quoted for the truth. And CWAG, its called NSA VETERANS server for a reason. And from what I've seen, I doubt that some of the players there will take kindly to newbs.

Theres a difference between newbs and nubs. If someones willing to do what theyre asked, I dont see any problem. yesterday there were 2-3 people there that were obviously new but one guy in particular kept saying "Can I do this, where should I go, what do we need as a team, go here, marines there, etc"
So yeah.
I think you need to take another look at your perception of clanners. They have the exact same ratio of idiots to nice people as any other group on Earth.
Cool that you like the game!
The marines that are going fast might have upgraded to Jetpacks.
Some players have used a technique to be able to move a tiny bit faster, so its all about playing and learning them, you'll figure it out one day.

I think he would have noticed that they were flying, tank...

There are times that the vet server is the most annoying place in the whole world to play ns. Everybody is so used to being th hero that nobody builds anything or plays support in any way. I'd rather play with a bunch of noobs that will do what needs to be done then 8 crack shots that wont do anything but play pressure.
At least I know thats what happens when I'm trying to get a few minutes of warmup in, and should be eating nodes, building base, commanding or god knows what - and instead rather go run straight for trouble. God knows I have better ways to spend my energy than worrying about a randomly scrunged together pubteam.
And most people with some experience understand that, or are at that point as far as pubbing goes. Unless its at least a pug you can't get them to do much that they don't want to. But hey, at least we have newbies that care and eat nodes, command and build countless RTs for us, sweet

Tell that to some of the guys in LoC. A couple of 'em won't leave a pub to come scrim unless A) Threatened with not playing in the match. B) Well.. usually thats the only way.
It was the jetpack comment that started it all...
Way to go Tanke...

They move at the same pace as they do when you play them, but they circle strafe around you while they empty their long range weapons if you don't bite their heads off.

Hmm nothing sucks more than having to fight against upgrade buffed players, but then again, don't play combat, play with experienced people on ns_ servers.
IF you try to survive against upgrade players, be carefull, camp a bit, come from behind, stick with the rest.
There are a variety of ways marines can move faster. The most common is the jetpack, which allows you to not only fly, but it also can create the illusion of fast ground travel. If the marine has a trail of blue lines following them, they're using a jetpack.
Another way of marines moving faster is that marines like to jump around a lot while fighting. Alien attacks, like the skulk's bite, frequently have knockback effects. If a marine is in the air when bitten, it can "throw" them away from you and make it look like they're moving faster.
Some combat servers (maps that begin with co_) have plugins that allow for faster marine movement with upgrades. These plugins aren't a normal part of Natural Selection.
As for getting killed while evolving, I recommend evolving in your hive area or in vents. Both places are less likely to have marines there to "scramble your egg." Evolving in other parts of the map can be useful if you're just picking up a trait like celerity or carapace, but changing your actual form takes too long for it to be really safe.
Back on topic... I think his question was misunderstood maybe. I think what he is asking here, is what I ask myself sometimes as well: why, as marines do you feel so slow, yet as an alien (attacking a marine) they feel so fast. Often, as a marine, I can bunnyhop up a ramp, across a railing and wiggle some and the skulk will be right at my heals, yet, as a skulk, I find that after the first bite, amazingly the marine has somehow longjumped 10 feet away from me... I don't know if this is a result of unlucky knockback or just really good marine bunnyhop/dodging (but I've also had this happen against marines that don't bunnyhop dodge), anyhow I believe that this is what he's implying, and to that I suggest totally removing knockback altogether.
