Imagine playing Far Cry sometime past midnight, in a part of the game that takes place at night and involves much patience & stalking & being stalked....
and a roach <i>in real life</i> fell down from the cieling onto my keyboard.

I was playing, oh the irony, farcry. Late at night... 4 am to be precise. I was tired, already a bit freaked cause of the gianganto zombo thingers of death that come from nowhere to wreack havoc... I'm stalking around... it's dead silence. When out of NOWEHERE this THING (I STILL DON"T KNOW WHAT IT WAS) jumpse in front of me and kills me. AT THE EXACT SAME TIME I FELT THIS THING CRAWLING DOWN MY BACK! I RIP off my shirt to find a dozen or so baby spiders in there... and about a dozen MORE crawling on ME! Oh GOD I freaked!
Or, maybe that time in the old DOS game Corridor 7... back when I was 8 I used to play that... and at a certain points in the levels this red "demon/devil" face would appear mere FEET in front of your character when you have nearly no HP and Ammo left and would "attack" you... in the handbook you've read that this guy is the 2nd to last boss... but they dont' TELL you about his apparitions. I SHAT MYSLEF THEN AND THERE! I was eight... and here I am lalready half dead, scared outa my wits by this game... and WHAM a spooky floating devilsh head appears in front of me (it was on the level with the invisible guys you need the UV Vision goggles for)
it's like fun for the first... 30 minutes? after that it is just the routine of imps spawn, kill imps, move on for the rest of the game. yea can be scary at certain times, but it gets real boring.

I'm going to buy the game. No doubt. But I'll die. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> What's scary really is in the eye of the beholder.
There's the level of 'desensitization' to gross stuff. And the level of 'desensitization' to darkness. If you find taking a walk around your local forrest cementary at 3 in the morning with various animals being startled and running out in front of you or making weird noises and no artificial lighting relaxing then doom 3 is just one big yawn from beginning to end.
The only things that really get my heart pounding is things like tetris when you have a record run and you're about to lose or in say NS when you sneak into marine spawn with a skulk or other vulnerable unit and you're just about to take a few finishing bites into the armory when a marine spawns in.
The only time I ever really panicked was when Shodan appeared in SS2. I mean, I knew it was System Shock, Shodan HAD to be there somewhere. But she really took me by surprise, and I just completely panicked, my instincts took over and I tried to run out of there. Only by that time there were invisible walls all around me, which freaked me out for a moment. Then my gamer logic took over: If I'm completely trapped in here, the game is most likely showing me something, not getting ready to kill me. And then I relaxed again. After that, the game didn't really scare me anymore.
As for Doom 3, I'm playing it on normal right now, and the enemies are not exactly lethal. Knowing that it's the adrenaline that makes you jumpy, and knowing that I don't really need it since the game is not all that hard, I just make sure not to get too worked up.
doom3 wasn't that scary. it was creepy, and disturbing at times, but the scares it gives you are mostly unexpected monster poping out of grates, walls etc that gets old really fast. i would say the scariest parts of doom3 are when the room turns red and starts moving stuff like corpses around and that voice starts talking to you in latin or something, and the head coming out of the wall. the bloody footsteps didnt' freak me out much. and the most disturbing monster was those baby things (cherubs)
ss2 wasn't scary at all. it was tense and creepy but i wouldn't classify it as scary. difference between ss2 and doom3 was someone in ss2 paid the electic bills. you get some damn powerful with the souped up assault rifle that nothing really threatens you anymore

How do people get freaked out then? <i>What</i> freaks them out? <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> The sound. Shodan's voice and face alone are probably the most famous parts of the game. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> A game has to keep immersion, too. I found Doom 3 genuinely creepy until hidden walls with monsters in opened up. Every time it happened, it would break immersion, because it would annoy me - it's such a desperate attempt to scare. Invisible walls are another example of breaking immersion (see Lolly's post). Otherwise, I reckon it would have been a better game.
Imagine if you were reading a good book and, during a tense bit, the author writes, "...and SUDDENLY a big man jumped out with a knife!!!!" You'd think, "oh, come <i>on</i>", put the book down, and make a sandwich without feeling at all afraid. It's like that.
A great example of a game that could have been scary, but fell flat on its face due to screw-ups, would be Clock Tower 3 for PS2. The concept is that you're just a teenage girl with no weapons <span style='font-size:8pt;line-height:100%'>(and a very small skirt. Hurrah for Japan)</span>, and you have to put tormented souls to rest. The problem is that there are supernatural serial killers after you. You can't kill them, only stun them with holy water, so whenever the killer catches up with you, you have to try to run and hide. And for the first level, it works very well. However, it gets screwed up from that point on. Stupid-looking serial killers, a plot that has holes in, killers acting stupid...you're constantly reminded you're playing a game. When that happens, it's hard to be affected.
My part here is to mention that I also freaked the hell out by AvP2 marine part for the first scene and never played it after that. My worst experience with horror games was sneaking into my big brothers room when I was like 8 and they (bro&co.) were playing Resident Evil (1) on playstation in a dim light and right when I checked the tv screen they came to the part right in the beginning when you have entered this narrow corridor, turn left to see an alcove turn to the right and check out there's a badly wounded body.. crouched next to a bloody corpse.. then comes a cut scene where the crouched zombie looks behind itself.. at the player.. and I was like <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo--> and woke up screaming couple of times after that. Scary sh**.
But I gotta ask all of you courageous players a favor: I for one am super curious about horror games, like I LOVE knowing what happens in them, I LOVE watching people play them but I can't handle them myself. So if you could tell me (maybe hide them from unwanted eyes by coloring) here scaries spoilers from SS2, Doom3 (like that delta thing, what's it about? What was that thing about the first pinky fight?) and other stuff. I'd really like if you would, thanks ^_^ (and yeah I AM too much of a chicken to ever see them myself)
Not much to say, but, make sure (if anyone does) to make it obvious that you're posting spoilers. I for one dont want DOOM3 ruined since I'm going to grab it.
I'm scared as you are. I just have this thing with "facing my fears" and I also think its fun.
Uh yeah exactly the point ain't to ruin it from everyone.. just me I guess <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> color coding or perhaps you could point me to a website or something. Im just curious about the plot of doom3 for example. Why did hell break loose and what is all that "they took my baby" stuff and who's behind it all. By the way does ANY of the Resident Evil games have a real ending? Like "Oh here's an elixir that kills every zombie now" or something?

If you want to see the Doom 3 engine used to make something <i>really</i> scary, try <a href='http://www.planethalflife.com/blended/pathways/' target='_blank'>this</a>. It doesn't work the latest patch, though, so make sure to try it before installing the patch.
