<div class="IPBDescription">Won't go above 640x480x16</div>Resolutions above 640x480 and 16-bit colors do not work with opengl and direct3d. Any ideas why?
I'm using an nvidia geforce 7950gx2 with driver version 91.47 (just reinstalled this from a newer, also not-working release.) Also running windows xp, on an Athlon 64 x2.
Oh, and searching yielded three-year old results with no solutions. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

I know in HL2, changing from lowest resolution + settings to highest causes a lag time of almost 15 seconds for me. Might be you're simply overloading your system?
Try editing your config.cfg file and putting in the resolutions and settings you want. Might work <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
