For those such as my self who have been playing since the release of Natural-Selection, please give your input on the <!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro--><b>first</b><!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> time you played Natural-Selection. What made you go "ooh, and aaah?" What map was your favorite? What was your favorite gun or weapon?
I thought it was beautiful. Sci-Fi meeting video gamers. What a combo!
The lighting atmosphere. Still does it!

Oni - Paralysis has had to be one of my favorites. ( Imagine Marine hovering above you, and WHAM! Slams to the ground and you smack the stuffing out of 'em! )

Damn right.
I found the whole concept brilliant. Walking on walls, gunning down aliens controlled by others, building as a gorge. (since chambers were loads bigger and onos was actually a problem back then I was like :O alot of times)
LMG in that time I guess, but best map? Surely bast or hera
Stupid thread.
don't forget about huge lags in first release. 400ms was a normal thing that days <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I remember jetpackers prone to fall damage, and it was especially fun (and hard) to have a jetpacker fall to his death in Refinery on bast <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
Paralyzed marines also shot you, which was quite annoying <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
Also, imba processing reloc and JP rush for the lose.

infamous back then was yes, the processing lame on hera where with 1 marine relocate you're in a position to siege 2 hives. cargo bay on nothing was also a gamebreaker as there were 3 resource nozzles within close proximity. a lot of maps were broken back then. the only hive i think that stood the test of time was tanith. that is the only map i remember that didn't have any major changes at all and it's still a blast to play. the only change i vaguely remember is a change to the vent in satcom and some minor change to the fusion hive.
first time i went gorge i accidentally built a sensory chamber and my whole team was groaning. you think sensory sucks now? it was absolutely useless then. no focus, and pheremones(?) didn't do squat. fade blink didn't work and relied on acid rockets which did huge damage back then with huge splash. gorges had webs at hive 2 and was a necessity to keep jpers out of the hive since everyone jp rushed. jps had infinite fuel back then when you had constant 100fps
love that map.
one of the first weeks when NS was online,
laggy servers (american and german servers only)
so i gave it a rest after 2-3 weeks orso,and came back when there were more servers online. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
Joined a server which was playing Eclipse, I remember the huge 300ms ping. Just shooting at crazy aliens as they flew by the screen and eventually owned us. I think I even saw an onos.
A few rounds later I was hooked, and have been playing every release since.
Introduced it to the gaming center I was helping out at, and it was an instant hit. Way back in 2002-2003. I remember the first theme night we had using NS. Center was full from about 4pm to 11pm when we closed. 25 people all playing NS running from a server. No other games, just NS.
Hmm, best moment from it was probably one of the first times I decided to hold an area by myself with just a single gorge. Old school wall of lame = win <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
<3 1.04 jetpack + hmg, you could be 1 man army with that.
Walking on the walls as a skulk. I quit playing when NS went to needing
Steam. My 28.8 dialup just couldn't keep up any more. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
i've been playing since the 2nd week NS went public and the first game i joined was on eclipse and the marine base was already overun by aliens. eclipse spawn was very different then with a vent into the marine start where you can gas marines and there were platforms and rails. my first spawn was onto the horn on a giant space cow and i died instantly. bilebombs were flying everywhere and back then bilebombs where like huge acid rocket bombs and when they exploded they pushed you around like xeno and onos charge.

Er, didn't the Eclipse vent from horseshoe to MS only appear in 2.0? Or was that just the weldable or something? I loved the 1.0x Eclipse MS structure, but I hated hose doors.
Sensories truly sucked: they didn't cloak surroundings, their function was to parasite marines who glued themselves to them, but you could actually knife them without getting parasited by the sensory chamber. They also gave out an annoying "Enemy is Approaching" message along with a blip on your hivesight, but it was annoying because if I remember correctly, sensory blips only appeared if you were close enough to the chamber. This ended up useless because it spammed enemy is approaching and you didn't know where.
Pheromones weren't in 1.0x, instead you had Advanced Hivesight. Marines didn't light up on alien "flashlight" so you needed this upgrade to lighten up marine players and structures (tbh making marines perma-lighted up was a great move)
Scent of Fear was like the current implementation, only that marines with 100hp didn't show up (which made it quite useless given the false sense of security it gave and the little advantage it provided, should you ever encounter a wounded marine.)
Pheromones were also useless of course, but I liked the colors <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
I also remember owning an onos with a siege canon (splash damage while he passed near a structure) during one of my first games as commander, so I spammed sieges to defend my base, ignoring that they didn't <i>target</i> alien players <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
lerk with spikes!

More like 800. I gave up out of fustration on that release, and when they released the patch, I tried it, but still found I was crawling along at like 10 fps. I do remember being fustrated that a skulk would kill me almost instantly, yet me not being able to kill anybody when I went skulk.
404 lies. Had he been playing all that time, surely I'd know him. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

100% true. My <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?s=643666167767698432&showuser=7556" target="_blank">old fubar account</a> that had the numbers removed has a join date of Nov7th 2002. But oct31st is when i first got NS.
At the time i was on a P3 450 with a TNT2 graphics card. I'd crawl around at 800x600 at 30fps MAX. In the command chair that dropped to a loving 5FPS.
Now i'm running a pretty beefy a64 3000+ with a FX5900. Hard to imagine i'd be playing NS long enough to see such drastic hardware changes.
first map was ns_hera, I had no idea what to do and went gorge at holo room by accident (playing arround with the popupmenu). Then some people started screaming at me, telling me to drop a RT. I was like sure, how? then they proceeded to explain how this was done. And I instantly fell in love with the game. We broke up when 2.0 came though :/
skulking and blowing myself up in the marine base was awesome as well as leapin.biting them in the face <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
Oh and babblers/1hour+++ games FTW
I did play on the marine team once and a while, but the sneakyness of the skulk and the build your own base thing of the Gorge I liked so much better <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
*cough* bast revolving door *cough*
In some games you went through 3 teams already and noone ever complained it took to long. (Sofar I can remember)
Very epic, very fun
I remember that my first map was ns_caged with its CC up the ladder. There were already set up mass turrets in the base + equipment everywhere. I didn't realize that I've already picked up a JP and thought: "wow these marines can jump very high" until i realized that I had a JP ^^
NS was pretty weird at the beginning until everything became familiar after a few games.
):
Then I closed it down and went to a beach house for four days. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
--Scythe--
First time ever playing, though, when I saw my buddy playing on his big screen TV he had. The map was the old old Eclipse. He was playing aliens, so I took over. I was amazed with the concept and gameplay. The next day, I shelled out for Half Life and downloaded NS. Thanks goodness I had dsl by then. ^_^
So, its Flayra's fault that I play too many video games. Hes the purpose I had HL, and now Steam and many games/mods on there. Good job! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> <3
