    <a href="http://www.gamefire.com/" target="_blank">This website</a> is awesome for replays with commentary. They really make you want to play the game. #39 and #40 are both pretty good, as far as the comments and the actual games go. Tanks, artillery, infantry, mass destruction, all that good stuff. It really showcases what CoH can be.

    Any idea how to fullscreen it? At the start of #39 the dude mentions their shiney new high res mode, and implies that its possible to fullscreen... but I can't figure out how because I suck.

    *edit* Yeah, 39 is pretty sweet. Just got to the big tank battle at around 21 mins

    The best thing about CoH is that it is impossible to turtle, if you turtle the other guy will just use long range or special ability artillery on your arse, killing enough to even win in some cases.

    I take back what I said, the very best about CoH is that you are able to play GERMAN for freakin once.

    #39 is the last one you can't fullscreen, I believe, but if your browser supports zooming (like Opera) you can just zoom in and since it's Flash it scales up nicely.

    Yes u can play as a German... not a campaign though. Far out! For once i want the satisfying buzz of being the BAD GUYS in a ww2 setting ><. The only ww2 game of done this in is a really old game called "Panzer General". In one alternate history campaign you can play as Germany and eventually assault London, then eventually Washington DC.

    Lol dont get me wrong im not a neo-Nazi who wishes they won the war, its just fun being the bad guys for once instead of listening to the sometimes nauseating patriotic American dribble you hear in basically every ww2 game out there (medal of honor, CoD etc.) Alternate historical missions are really fun in my opinion cause you GENUINELY dont know whats going to happen.

    so basically, id LOVE to see a german campaign, a-historicla or otherwise.

    Almost all WW2 strategy games, turn based and real time, let you play as German in the campaign. Even the CoH standalone expansion will have a German single player campaign. CoH is the exception to the trend, really.

    I agree that it's nice when games let you play as the Germans. Yeah, they lost the war, but they obviously won plenty of battles... you could play out those battles.

    Nah, I didn't hate the fact that units were treated as units. I actually loved that.

    What I hated was that it billed itself as a realistic RTS in which situations that I described happened. It had all this cinematic stuff, the later versions even had cinematic views during playback. It was just comically ridiculous to "pretend" that you were playing or watching a movie in which soldiers can shoot at each other for five minutes and not even hit anything.

    It's pretty sound as far as strategy and stuff goes.

    And Disco, that wasn't really a fair comparison. And I don't like Warcraft, so you're example is irrelevant to my existence. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    I don't think I've ever seen "realistic" attached to anything in CoH except the graphics (until now of course). The only one shot one kill people are the snipers, and of course the explosions which can take out multiple people in one blast.

    If you don't like Warcraft, how about Starcraft? A probe vs an SCV wouldn't be a very exciting fight. They'd just sit there for 30 seconds tazering each other.

    I thought it was pretty obvious from their ad campaigns that they were going for a cinematic experience. Like playing Saving Private Ryan. All the real world concepts of squad based tactics (except for the small problems of infantry squads being only six guys and so on) where there, crew served weapons required crews, buildings exploded and could be run through, all these physical properties were being displayed, and yet the game still used a skills based system for deciding whether or not a bullet was going to hit.

    Probes and SCVs aren't combat units, engineers were. Everything in CoH is a combat unit. It looks like, feels like, and pretends to be a realistic strategy game based in WWII.

    Don't get me wrong, I love almost all aspects of the game. I'm just sayin that I'm really fickle when it comes to things like that. I was also impressed by how easily retreating units can dodge incoming fire, or that a player who doesn't roll tanks while the others do is merely prolonging defeat, or other things.

    Maybe there's somebody out there whose really good at busting tanks with infantry or artillery or whatnot, but it's a helluva thing to beat. I guess it's just me. I just think the game's far less than the totally original and earth shattering concept it's made out to be.

    When I was still playing CoH, I was ranked anywhere from rank 15-20 on the 1v1 ladder. I was damn good at that game.

    I stopped playing because it was so repetitive, especially at 1v1s. And multiplayer games devolve into the same old strategy of "turtle for 15 minutes then tankspam your way to victory". This was especially true for the Allies with their Shermans and Allied War Machine.

    To be honest, the dialogue of the game was more entertaining than the game itself. They cast each voice perfectly for each side.

    "Sherman...on point."
    "Fire. <i>Fire!</i> FIRE MAIN WEAPON!
    "Kraut mower here" (an armored truck with a quad .50 machine gun turret)
    "Armored wrecky to Greyhound!"
    "What's with the Europeans and their goddamned statues?" <- Best line <b>ever</b>
    "Join the army, they said. It'll be fun, they said!"
    "We're airborne! We're meant to be surrounded!"
    "Puma is trying to engage our armor! Good luck!"
    "Break's over, back to the war!"

    "Can't you drive any faster, Klaus?!?!" (cracked me up the first time I heard it)
    "When it's clicking like that, you have to reload!"
    "After the war is over, I will teach German to Betty Grable!"
    "Fry zos Yankees!"
    "Tiger reporting....target is no more."

    The fact that I remember all that dialogue (there's plenty of gold in there, I would recommend buying the game just to hear all of the voiceovers) is pretty telling.

    Well, I haven't beat the first mission yet. Took a break so as to avoid a headache. I did enjoy that part in the tutorial when your engies build an MG turret nest and you sandbag it and then you're attacked by krauts. Then you get to use your artillery, OMG. I zoomed in for it and the camera was shaking and blood decals were flying everywhere. Bodies were laying withered and dying. Dying, did I mention dying? As in not dead but at the end of their rope crying in pain or holding their stomach wound.

    When I first zoomed in on my units I was astonished at the level of detail for these little guys. I almost always have to watch the firefight at eye level because it makes me feel like I'm playing 'Call of Duty' and I love CoD. The character models rival that of CoD as a matter of fact. Do not get me started on how cover goes into play, because I love utilizing cover in this game. Even more so I love picking up an MG42 and designating a field of fire for oncoming german infantry. Watching them scramble for cover or become pinned down in the hail of bullets and blood. The cinematics remind me of movies such as 'Saving Private Ryan' and 'Band of Brothers' there is this really short scene at the beginning of the airborne campaign where your squad and walking in the dark with the sky being lit up by search lights and triple A fire.

    Voice acting was suprisingly good. The game in all reminds me of 'Close Combat' except your soldiers won't retreat without orders to do so.

    The second world war must be such a wonderfully uncomplicated conflict if you lack the mental capacity to see it in anything but "good and evil."

    PerfectionsFlaw, the squirming soldiers are soldiers that can be saved when you're farther into the game/play multiplayer. You build an aid station as the allies, or a medic bunker as the axis, a medics will come out of the station and retrieve people that are still alive from the field of battle. Once you save six or so men, you get a free squad of riflemen.

    Also, the cover system in this game deals mostly with giving each unit near that piece of cover a static bonus, not actually that unit hiding behind the cover and dodging bullets, at least from what I can tell, but there might be exceptions. Also, units in heavy cover have an drastically lessened chance to lose a man to enemy fire. Their health bar will drop, which will mean it will be easier to lose individual units, but for the most part they'll all stay alive until it comes down to the nitty gritty, which is pretty cool.

    As far as being repetitive goes, I'd have to disagree, although I don't play on the top ladder games so thats not up to me. I only shack up with two to three other friends and we all play against an axis computer. However, from all the replays I've watched on Gamefire there are several routes you can take to victory. The "See who can spam the most tanks!" strategy must be old, because that's hardly the case anymore. Tanks do help, but they don't need to be the primary makeup of your army late game. Sticky bombs, mines, anti tank guns, bazookas and recoilless rifles do a pretty good job at destroying tanks, and when the heavy tanks come onto the field, you can still use all of the listed, but with a little bit of assistance from your own tanks, too.

    I love this game. The strategy is pretty nice and in depth. I was surprised that there actually is a cover difference from units in a wooden building to units in a brick or stone building.

    how realistic is cover?

    e.g.1:

    o__||_________x

    e.g.2:

    ||_o_________x

    where,

    o = my unit,
    || = cover,
    x = bad guy
    (try to ignore the underscores, the forum won't print spacebar spam)

    in (1) i've got cover between me and the badguy, in (2) i haven't but i've still got the green sheild icon. will (2) still be effective or should i micro them to the over side of the cover?

    I haven't played a ton, but I believe you have to be on the right side of the cover for it to work.

    And I would've said it doesn't matter which side of the cover you are, as long as you have the green shield icon. I don't know it for a fact, though <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" />

    The units will seek cover most of them time automatically unless cover is far away from the unit. Sometimes they will act dumb so you will have to micro them.

    As for being on the right side of the cover, it depends on the type of cover and what is firing at you.

    One of my favorite parts of the game (and I have a lot of favorite parts) is the engine and the graphics. It's so <i>pretty</i>. It's like watching a first persons shooter from really high up, except you don't feel bad sacrificing your units like you do in Battlefield 2 (and it's not like they listen to the commander in BF2 anyways).

    2 won't shield you from any bullets coming from x because you're not behind the cover..if x was on the other side of 2's cover then they'd be protected.

    If the green symbol is there, you get the cover bonus, if the yellow you get a slight bonus, if red you get a penalty, no matter where you are.

    <i>WHY DOES EVERYONE HAVE TO GIVE A DIFFERENT ANSWER?!</i>

    I have the definitive answer, though. <a href="http://www.relicrank.com/bloggo/2007/02/22/some-information-about-cover-in-coh/" target="_blank">This is the blog of a Relic developer</a> and she explains it:

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->The primary form of cover in CoH is directional cover – the projectile will have to come from a specific direction to take advantage of it. Sandbags for an example, if you have a squad set up behind some sandbags only projectiles that arrive from the other side of the sand bags will have the cover penalties applied. This cover is dynamic and is based on the objects themselves, things like wrecked tanks that did not exist when the map was created will provide troops cover.

    There is a 360 type of cover in the game, but it is only really used for things like craters and they will only ever supply light cover. Light cover does not save you from artillery, it only helps you against small arms fire (rifles, machine guns, etc.) – and not nearly as much as heavy cover would. The light cover is dynamic as well – as a Howitzer is peppering the battlefield with artillery the craters that are left behind will provide infantry with light cover.

    Heavy Cover will provide some protection from artillery, but that artillery needs to have landed on the other side of the object providing the directional cover.

    Also keep in mind there are weapons in the game designed to flush units out of cover – things like Grenades, Mortar, and Flamethrowers will decimate troops hiding immobile behind a large chunk of heavy cover.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Finality! It feels goooood.
