You need to stop taking NS so seriously. It's a damn video game.

How can you come to the official forums and tell a developer to stop taking the game seriously? I take NS very seriously, and I make no apologies for it. I also see that MANY people in all aspects of the community take it very seriously. The admins who run the leagues, the pubbers who pony up for their monthly server rentals, the players who organise teams for tournaments. You have to commit to something to make it worthwhile, but that isn't to say that you shouldn't keep it in perspective. You are correct, NS is a video game, but it is for each person to decide how seriously they take it.
Also, I do not need to research anything. None of my inaccuracies take from the fundamental accusation. Which team you joined, and what you did is 100% irrelevant.
So the question is, how does someone who claims to not take NS seriously make the effort to ruin the game for 12 other dedicated players and 60 odd spectators. Your inherent contradictions are hilarious. You are the one who takes it overly seriously. If you really didn't care, then you'd just go away and stop playing the court jester.
The last NA team put together was by Annihilator with probably my own hand in it a bit. This was the best team possible to put together for the match. The irony was that the cohesive roster that, if it ever was successfully assembled would be an obscenely dominant team, showed up only in pieces. If you wanted to argue putting together a cohesive unit maybe not so good but one that would actually show up, sure. But I just didn't see it because I've been through debacles like Team US-East which was headed by the people who wanted another shot here. They waited their turn for this one, which was greatly appreciated (by most of us anyway). But yeah, come afternoon on a Sunday the best this group could do was assemble a crack team of Helen Keller's to force 1v1 situations, which unfortunately can be met with relative success since the competition never really seems to pick up on it (mostly because the scene is dead and noone challenges themselves to get better).
Not that I justify chuck or milo's actions, but given the alternatives (going in assuming noone is hacking), I'd trust these guys simply because they'll listen if we get into a decent match. One player decided this match was not important to him, and the match was far from decent. From my perspective though the worst gameplay element is the element of people who don't listen, and I'm willing to work with anything as long as that cooperation is there, and I think Captain Anni would agree. You only ever really need one or two consistently skilled players in any given round, where everyone else just needs to do their job. Even in recent memory I know some otherwise decent players that are just god awful in a pug situation. Like, needing-a-constant-verbal-strangling awful.
As to people dropping n bombs and the like, honestly it's such a shallow form of harrassment I cannot believe people really point at it to complain. There used to be far worse and annoying barriers to entry, though maybe we in the competitive community like to pretend there weren't. You can play competitive and have a great friggin time any round your team wants to play together and listen.
This is purely my opinion, but I think the greatest frustration, the root of it all extending beyond just the competitive community even, is this sense of death and abandonment from the NS team, or maybe just from the game as a whole. Yet we love this game so much and everyone keeps a small flame of hope lit, so when we are saying to ourselves "too little too late" for the hundreth time, it really becomes maddening. But we never seem to stop finding ourselves saying it these past years, after the site was down or a bad version was made or whatever. Here's to hoping for NS2 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/lerk.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::lerk::" border="0" alt="lerk.gif" />

Good post Steve, but I really think the problems need to be solved now. Postponing them until NS2 is not a good idea IMO. If I understand you correctly, you are saying that many people justify their childish behaviour because they feel that they weren't given the right level of attention in previous years? ( i.e. too little too late ) I'm not sure if it will help the current discussion to go down that rathole, but really, it isn't any defence in my mind. Are we supposed to tell the current crop of competitive NS potentials that they should not expect to enjoy a finals night because some people are bitter about the past?
Essentially, you need to Fix your broken windows right now.
I think that on the day, you did what you thought was best for the challenge match, but perhaps in hindsight it would have been wiser to assume that the ANSL incident was indicative of the expected behaviour from those players.

See, if you are just faking this attitude in order to rage people you might actually seem like a functional human being. If this is your true attitude that also impacts the so called RL you are certain to fall on your face pretty damn hard.
There is no harm in fixing the problems with NS, whilst it won't revitalize the game it's comforting to see that the developers are aware of the issues and acting on them. Seeing improved features and bugs ironed out lets me know that these weren't forgotten and will hopefully be in place from the very start for NS2.

Sorry, the too little too late comment was more in regards to a new version (3.1 or whatever it was coming out after a year) or for example the Flayra blog recording thing (I have yet to listen to it though) that just came out and was posted on the ANSL forum. The childish behavior is related, but I didn't mean to justify it that way, at 10 in the morning I'm probably not in the most coherent state of mind.
Let me just start off by saying that make no mistake, the humor is 99% of the time entirely stupid, but it is completely intended that way as a "so stupid you can't help but laugh" kind of way. Everyone reading this forum watches some comedic shows or movies that employs this, whether Family Guy or whatever, and anyone with a sense of humor laughs more often than they don't. So you'll ask "now why is this in NS?" Well, look at it from a standpoint of "What do I want to get out of this game?" In a competitive community where the answer of "To challenge myself and improve" hasn't been in the majority for a long, long time, what's left is "to have a good time".
Here's where it gets really simple: everybody has their own way of having a good time. Getting a rise out of people for lulz (A CORRUPTION OF L, O, L) is part of people's agendas, all to varying degrees. With the ###### and DOMINATED spam, noone without insecurity issues should ever be seriously offended over these words on a video game where the main agenda is to have a good time. It's so stupid it's funny; in fact the less appropriate it is (DOMINATED after hmg'ing NSPlayer's skulk), it's that much more funny when these people actually defend themselves. Sure it's immature, but who here's reading the Wall Street Journal while they play to begin with? And for that matter, since when was being politically correct a part of maturity OR having fun? To me personally and from my experience, racism, real discrimination, does not come in the form of six letter words. That is my justification. You don't have to agree, but hopefully you understand. The ultimate goal has always been to have a good time, never to offend people.
Cop out. You're saying so long as you don't take it seriously when you insult people, they have no right to get insulted.
And don't try the layed back "don't take it seriously" route- on the ANSL forums you got arsey when I poked fun at you and you went off on a "my university is better than yours!!" rant. (Do you even know which uni I went to?)
I'm saying I don't care if I offend people who are like that. What is with you and needing to one-up me so badly? You act like you're on a (my?) radar and people are obligated to justify themselves to you in particular. Contribute for a change or take it to the Insane House.
Radix I'm not sure how you could have expected anything else.
Almost all the competative players are good people but just like in RL you get enough guys together they do some stupid stuff and its usually pretty fun. Just need to get past that hard outer shell.....

I'm too stupid to use the new board to quote correctly. Sorry, but my bullet points will be lame.
1. Sure, it's easy to ignore. But this doesn't take away from the fact that many pub players see this behaivor and generalize it. Many players don't like it, and instead of ignoring it they just say ###### it and continue to pub.
2. I do not know of anything similar for NAns. While you can find many teams that are great guys, it's unenjoyable for some to play the other not-great-guys teams. Nothing is done about these non-great-guys, whereas in a server, a single server, there are admins to take care of them. my point with this statement was addressing MrBen's statement that homophobia/racism are parts of life; this is not the case on many servers.
3. That's exactly my point. Without anyone to get rid of the ######s in comp play, some pub players are turned away from the game. Did you read the first post?
As for servers, personally I played one (and a half) seasons of CAL because of two seperate servers that decided to field competetive teams.
4. again, did you read the first post? most pub players think that all comp players are indeed nazis, and I'm pointing out that some do not hold this view.
selfishness of having good fun might ruin other peoples games, ex. ansl finals if that how does look your fun then you're just a spoiled kid on the internet, then after you have done what you did you do your dominated etc. Lets hack on the exhibition game cause it's fun, why not lol.

This is pretty much the best post in this thread. I played for one of the better euro teams at the time a pretty long time ago, and while I can say the people in it were all very nice guys (I still chat to most of them from time to time) and on the inside mature people, there seemed to be a vibe going around the competitive scene of "let's be jerks cos its funny rofl ^^". A vibe that apparently still exists. Where it comes from and why people all go along with it, I still don't know.
I do know that it exists in other games as well, so let's not pretend the NS comp. scene houses the most immature people you'll ever see.

Lets hack on the exhibition game cause it's fun, why not lol.
What the hell are you talking about? If i took NS as seriously as you I'd abide by the rules instead of causing lulz which i did. I joined the game with chuck to cause a laff. How is that taking it too seriously? How is it "making an effort" to trick maximus into giving us the password? Tricking him is like solving a 2 piece jigsaw puzzle. You have some horrible logic.

Hasn't happened yet. But thanks for the advice. I'll be sure to ignore it.
Win-win, everyone goes home happy.

ban me for what rofl?
NEED SOME LULZ
DOMINATED
Almost all the competative players are good people but just like in RL you get enough guys together they do some stupid stuff and its usually pretty fun. Just need to get past that hard outer shell.....
There are no excuses for illegal actions.

This is a good point which deserves a reply. See my first post.
