made 14 years ago and i still play it every now and then
I have never played a more intense FPS in my life. Man the feeling of satisfaction you get when killing the last boss in ultra-violence mode... priceless.
In terms of multiplayer... Command and Conquer Generals: Zero hour. Apart from being one of the best value for money expansions ever (9 unique armies), the gameplay is varied and can at times be utterly hilarious. Ok so the interface is a bit wacky and AI often hopeless... but the units (overlord tanks, rocket buggys, bomb trucks etc.) are creative and can be employed into a plethora of strategies. It was not just a "ive built more units then you gg" kind of rts that i feel dominates the market now (C&C 3 for example).
I know many regard C&C generals as the weakest in the series, but for the life of me i have no idea why. (could it be that the interface was just different?)
Incorporating the full use of the Z-axis as well as having unique weapons and vehicles made this game an absolute joy to play. That and its the first FPS where I learned how to use a mouse.
I was around for Doom and Quake, but Quake 2 is probably my favorite. It had just enough storyline to make you feel like you were doing something important. The beginning cinematic with all the news reports and stuff. I knew i was about to embark on an epic adventure. The strogg are the perfect enemy when it comes to embracing the feeling of a serious threat to humanity by alien beings. Sorta like the aliens in the Alien movies. Haha, i also remember in Quake 4 a marine on the ship said something along the lines of how scary the strogg were because they were flesh and technology, and how "creepy" it was because of how much human beings rely on technology. I believe he called the strogg the "next step in evolution".
The only other game that is a close second to Quake 2 for me is Resident Evil. Playing that at night when i was 13 or 14 was awesome.
In recent times, the only game that has really come close to my heart was The Suffering. I don't think i've ever been so emotionally attached to a storyline. I recommend that game to everyone.
I left multiplayer games out of my top games simply because with the right people, any multiplayer game can be fun. The two favorites of mine though are Aliens vs Predator Gold and Day of Defeat. AvPG was my first online game, so its easy to see the attachment.
Sorry for the wall of text, but i had nothing in particular to do just now...
It is basically a sport-fps-game, There is a ball that you need to shot/carry inside the enemy goal, there is a keeper with special abilities (as in, unvulnerable and faster).
Every player is unvulnerable as long as she does not carry the ball or is inside the enemy penalty zone. Inside the penalty zone, one hit is enough to get killed, outside, you can survive one hit. Players respawn instantly in front of the own goal. The only weapon is the "Hammer Tool" with 3 fire modes, suck(as in magnetic tool to get the ball), normal shot and pass (shots the ball auto-calculated, dependent on the movment of the target exactly to it)
it has a small communety, but it still exists and is played constantly.
Starsiege Tribes - Vehicles. http://www.instantaction.com/ for those who want to try their new game that runs in your browser. Duke Nukem 3D - Cooler then Doom over serial cable. Favorite maps=block wars, beta one & beta two. Best when playing Midi in the background on my Roland card. Unreal Tournament - Teleport killing and world ranking. Quake 3 - Speed (stil play) Can't wait until Quake Live is released. Day of Defeat - M1 Carbine (stil play) Counter Strike - before Colt lost it's scope in 6.5. Beta 1 is stil in memory. BF 1942 & 2 - Great when they work. COD4 (stil play) HL1&2 - So many good mods!
Larry, Police Quest & Space Quest but most of all Kings Quest 3 and 5. Fun!
Red Alert, Civ1&2, AoE2, MoO, Diablo 2 with friends. Power Stones on the Dreamcast. N+ on DS
I hard to say who is the winner. I guess it has to be Counter Strike when beta. Based on the amount of time spent in game.
I gess ill start with console sense it there i start gaming.
Nintendo (before super nes) Zelda and Super Mario
Bad Company PS3.
Now the PC.
Unreal - Love the hand gun and how it upgrade to more powerfull the more ammor you collect and save, the game modes.
Unreal Touenament - Love the razor blade gun, used to own with it.
First version of Counter-Strike beta 5-7 was the best.
Second version of Day of Defeat just relased when i started, but i did get a few days of first version, but ill go with second version. It was something diffrent more skills in it with the idea of controlling the recoil. Played on Angry Old Farts before STEAM was in the world, then few years after i found them again and STEAM was in the world, so i joined then and was there for 3-4 years the drop due to timezone and school.
Battlefield 1942, the sandbox says it all. (still play BF games, atm 2142/BC)
Wow, this is a hard question! A few that come to mind...
DOOM Dune 2 Ogre Battle Street Fighter 2 Ikaruga Day of Defeat (not source) Team Fortress 2 Dawn of War Shadow of the Colossus Ico Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom
With a bit of hindsight, I shall say Day of Defeat. Even though I don't really play it anymore it was probably the one game that really grabbed me by the proverbial balls and didn't let go. It was the only game I ever played competitively and I loved every minute of it. Now I'm hooked on TF2, L4D, and other Source mods. Bloody Steam is killing my rock n' roll.
This has also brought to mind another tangential point: stay away from MMOGs, in case you didn't know it already. As I was thinking through my gaming history there are these certain blank spots and lulls, sometimes lasting years, and I realize now that those were when I was playing Everquest, Meridian 59, EVE, World of Warcraft, or any of the other time sinks we call 'MMORPGS'. Those stupid games have kept me from so many others. The last one I played was Lord of the Rings Online which was actually very good but, again, a horrible time sink.
Not only did it convince me to get into the games industry, it was the first game to ever show me that games can be art, story, plot, while being interactive, and introduce theories and ideas I'd never even considered.
