Cant get more then 20fps, wha?
My specs:
TNT2, Guillmot(sp?)
555Mhz AMD K6-2
152MB RAM
I cannot, no matter how much I tweak, no matter what I adjust, get more then 20fps in NS. This isnt just on NS maps, its also in Half-Life DM maps. Think the fact the heatsink fell off my uber TNT2 could be the problem?
It SEEMS like im getting 30+fps, but net_graph 3 says im only getting 5-15. 20 if I stare at a wall in a corner looking straight down at my feet.
Below are actually, unedited pictures of when I put all graphics settings at their lowest possible limits. It was so blurry I thought abstract art might look more defined

Now here is the wierd part: I normally run the game in much better looking mode, and I get the same fps. So how is it possible to have the game looking better and yet still get the same FPS as when it looks like crap? What am I missing here?
Is this some indicator my computer will soon melt down into a gooey puddle of plastic and silicon?

No, thats what the early-warning-smoke is there for
In software mode (it can't run d3d or ogl very well) I get three frames per second. I'd get you a screen shoot, but I think it would start paging if I tried.
Oh, well. Its the best way I have to get test data.

Thats a desent computer.
My specs:
Voodoo3 3000 16mb
400Mhz AMD K-6 3D accel.
352mb PC1000(?) RAM.
But I get ~40 fps at start of game. ~20 fps near middle of game. ~4 fps when I go near marine base, end of map, and a constant 4fps in NS_Caged (if you see me on a server that just changed to ns_caged, you can say bye-bye to me. Don't get me wrong, I like the map.... except its just toooooooo much for my computer to handle).
I run my HL in 640x480 OpenGL mode. I have the newest Voodoo3 3000 drives and the demo version of WhickedGL. I run defrag at least 2 times a week. I run scandisk at least 1 time a week. I have CasheBooster set on "Gaming" mode and I have MaxMem doing aggressive at 80%.
I usually get 40-60 fps in TFC, CS, S&I, VS, and Poke646.
I plan on getting a GeForce4 Ti4200 128mb soon. So hopefully I'll be with those 100fps players.
I also play Worms.
Now with the simple addition of an Nvidia Geforce2 GTS 32mb I can run NS in OpenGL 800x600 "pretty well."
I don't recall my exact FPS stats, and some research has suggested that people 'get used' to a particular update rate and that sometimes higher fps rates can be just as disorienting as lower ones...
And then we get into how people say your eye only takes BLAH BLAH pictures per second, which I feel is probably a simplistic solution, I wouldn't be surprised if the human eye actually processed things in a far less orderly fashion, updating burry segments of a picture rather than 're-scanning' the scene.
well putting a geforce 4 into a 555 mhz machine wont do much
my specs:
TNT2 Pro
Pentium III 866mhz
128 megs of RAM and i get a pretty decent fps on 800x600 d3d
I suppose my gfx card is the prob, i can't run it in D3D as its runs sort of laggy, slugish like, if you get what i mean

*Is completly puzzled*
I increased my resolution to 1024x768 and now my fps stay at 30 and if i walk to a wall it raises to 50!
But now I have no sound
Soundcard
And Ge4 Ti4xxxx usually costs around $150, so its good to get a new vid card.. or even a Ge3 Ti xxxx for $80 or so.
See, this is the good part about me. I get my GeForce 4 Tixxxx for FREE!!!! CLOTHES!!!!
Humen beings can't see anything over 70-75 FPS anyway so why all the fuss?
As I understand it, movies and such blur the images together at around 28 fps. Your eye doesn't notice the difference because the frames all blend. Computer monitors refresh the image completely, there is no blurring between frames. The faster the framerate, the better off you are.
I would guess it's similar to audio, some people can hear really high pitched noises (I like to call them mutants) where others (the normal people) can not. I can see flickering at 60fps on my monitor, other people can not. Maybe 98 percent of people wouldn't know the difference between 75 and 100 fps, but I'm sure there are those few mutants who can.
Just to help my argument concerning monitors, set your refresh rate to 60 Hz. Can you see the flicker? If yes, go look at a light bulb, can you see it flickering? Probably not. Your power also runs at 60 Hz, but through whatever magic you can't notice.
(Some people can see fluorescent lights flicker.)
Uhh.. so.. what am I trying to say? I dunno. Oh, if you have a great video card and a crappy monitor, you're limited to your monitor's refresh rate.
Well, that's my broken argument concerning things I should know had I gone to my physics classes.
P.S. To help your video settings, try some new drivers. Sometimes there are 3rd party drivers that really help. WickedGL comes to mind, but that might be voodoo cards only.
Detonator drivers from Nvidia are probably your best bet with any TNT / GeForce chipset.
Good luck raising your fps!
256 DDR ram
ATI RADEON 7200 (soon to switch to Geforce 4 Ti 4200 VIVO 8xAGP [reason: RADEON sucks all **obscenity** and **obscenity** locks up HL after 5 minutes of gameplay])
AMD Athlon-700 (Slot A) (None of that Thunderbird BS, the ORIGINAL RUN.)
ASUS K7V
512MB RAM (SDR. Have 1.5GB, but Win98 starts screwing up at anything over 768, even with the workaround.)
ATI Radeon 9000 Pro
Rock-solid 100fps at 1024x768x32. Tested on a borrowed monitor, still solid at 100fps at 1600x1200x32. Cranked it to FSAA 6x Performance mode, with 16-tap anisotropic filtering. ROCK SOLID 100fps. I can't *get* this thing to fall under 100fps in half-life, on a CPU that supposedly 'cpu limits' it, unless I turn on Truform with a patch level of 2 (on the 9000 series, the truform smoothing was halfway moved into the drivers. 9700, it's all on-card.)
Perhaps it's just that your 7200 is really, really old? I saw much improvement when upgrading from my ATI Rage Fury MAXX, after all (Dual Rage128 card).
I still don't really know why people go with nVidiot stuff. The Radeon 9700 Pro is spanking nVidia's DEVELOPMENT stuff by a margin of 25-300%. Yeah, it's a $300-350 card, but unless you get a low-end Ti version (they're still MXes to me, stupid marketroids) you're already going to be paying about that much. Whereas for about $110-120, the 9000 Pros will nail a Ti4200 to the wall. And look prettier doing it.

You can't see a lightbulb flicker on normal power. They give light because they're hot, and at normal power frequencies (50 to 60 Hz in most countries) the filament doesn't get much time to cool down.
Monitors and fluorescent tubes are different. There are different kinds of phosphors that may make them glow a little bit longer or shorter, but those generally aren't good for computer screens as they create some ghosting. Also, some fluorescent tubes are made to run at higher frequencies as the standard power, so you can't see them flicker.
A good way to detect the flicker is using your peripheral vision (very sensitive to motion). Don't look straight at the monitor, but keep it at the edge of your field of vision.

My comp upgrades are very old. But it doesn't matter, all i am doing is running hl.
I run net_graph 1? (mine doesn't show the line grapgh thing) but anyways i get a norm of 99fps constant
In a big fire fight, with alot of guys it might drop to around 60? but still very much playable.
Some tips for nvidia users(as long as your not a detail freak):
Make sure vsync is off. (to turn this off, right-click on desktop, go to properties. Then to settings, then to advanced. should be under Opengl)
I run in 16bit color, don't notice a difference in quality of picture, but hl does run a bit faster
Antistropic filter is also uneccesary. (see above, should be under Opengl also)
This is what i run with, and if any or all of these settings were on.
You should notice a huge difference in speed. Hope this helped alittle bit.
Talesin, I would like to see a screen shot of your 100 fps in HL
(BTW, that says '99.3 fps'. Staring at a wall or in a firefight, it usually hovers between 96fps and 100fps, which I consider rock-solid.)

I guess it's only temporary since you're getting a new card, but uninstall WickedGL. I thought it was better, but it's not. DOOManiac told me to uninstall it, and I had a average 10fps jump. YAY 10 fps now!
BTW: if the ti4600 doesn't work as you expected when you install it, it's because of your poor processing speed. I got a geforce2 mx200 (I know bad choice) and it ran WORSE than my voodoo3 2000 because my stupid processor is only 533 mhz. oh, and I have a compaq.
